Celeb chefs 部隊 to 料金d hungry, help bleeding restaurants

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - When Jose Andres first (機の)カム to New York City, the wide-注目する,もくろむd sailor in the Spanish 海軍 ドッキングする/減らす/ドックに入れるd on West 30th Street 十分な of ambition. 10年間s later, the award-winning chef has an upscale food hall on that very street and will serve 40,000 meals this week across the city where he built his dreams, and which is now the U.S. 震源地 of the coronavirus.

Andres, whose restaurants in the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs 含む The Bazaar, Jaleo and the two Michelin-starred Somni, 設立するd World Central Kitchen in 2010. It has served over 15 million meals 世界的な after ハリケーンs, wildfires and other 災害s.

Since the pandemic, his organization has served more than 750,000 meals from Miami and Los Angeles to Little 激しく揺する, Arkansas, and Fairfax, Virginia. It 作品 out of places like libraries, food トラックで運ぶs and shuttered restaurants, feeding 125 hospitals, students in school lunch programs and even 検疫d 巡航する ship 乗客s.

Andres has amassed an A-名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) 網状組織 around the world, relying on celebrity chef pals 含むing Rachael Ray, Guy Fieri and Marcus Samuelsson to 料金d the hungry and ブイ,浮標 the humble restaurant kitchens across America where many started their careers.

"I´m in 負債 to America. ... That´s the best I can give to America because America gave me a home. America gave me 適切な時期," Andres told The Associated 圧力(をかける) in a 最近の phone interview.

In New York City, he 始める,決める up a cafe to serve the 開始する Sinai field hospital in Central Park. In Harlem, he's using "Chopped" TV 裁判官 Samuelsson's Red Rooster restaurant to 料金d families.

Samuelsson's Miami restaurant hasn't opened to the public yet, but instead of leaving it empty, he turned it over to World Central Kitchen. They are serving 挟むs and salads there to laid-off 歓待 労働者s, homeless 居住(者)s and Uber drivers.

Even in 危機, these 最高の,を越す chefs aren't serving bland porridge. 最近の meals at 上級の 中心s in Washington, D.C., 含むd creamy tomato pasta with spring vegetables, and cilantro rice bowls with spiced chickpeas and spinach topped with citrus vinaigrette and crispy tortillas.

Andres was の中で the first to の近くに his restaurants, hoping to create a 詳細な計画 for chefs around the world on how to use their restaurants and 雇う 労働者s while feeding the hungry.

"This 操作/手術 is growing every day," he said. "We want to put America to work in the 過程 of feeding America."

In California, Fieri is on 代替要員,物, ready with a 48-foot-long (15-メーター-long) 救助(する) kitchen and support team. "Guy is ready to go," Andres said. "This is like war. You need to have 軍隊/機動隊s ready for 活動/戦闘."

Fieri compared his longtime friendship with Andres and other famous chefs to "playing in a 禁止(する)d."

"When you hang out with generous, philanthropist 将軍s like Jose Andres, all you want to do is go bigger, go better," said Fieri, who cooked と一緒に Andres during last year's California wildfires.

"As diners, we´re always the ones asking restaurants for help. ... We ask the servers to take special care of our (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs, the bartenders to listen to our stories and the bussers to clean up our messes," Fieri said. He 述べるd the program as "a big warm 一面に覆う/毛布, as if to say, `Hey, we got you. It´s our turn to help you for once.´"

Ray 発表するd a $4 million 寄付 Tuesda y from her two charities. Half will go to feeding and nutritional programs, 含むing World Central Kitchen. The other half will support animal 救助(する), feeding and veterinary programs.

"We are not a 災害 救済 基金 by origin or 願望(する) but that´s what we´ve become やめる 率直に in the last couple of years," she told the AP in a phone interview.

Andres' organization is one of the largest 受取人s.

"He´s just there around the clock all over the 惑星 and I love Jose. I´m so 充てるd to him," Ray said from her home in upstate New York.

In Minnesota, Chef Andrew Zimmern was の中で the first there to shutter his restaurants, 恐れるing for his 労働者s' safety. Next, he cobbled together the 独立した・無所属 Restaurant 連合, 雇うing lobbyists to be a 発言する/表明する in Washington for restaurants, 特に mom-and-pop ones. "We can´t fail. (Restaurants) have to be open and ready to welcome their 労働者s 支援する," said Zimmern. "If we can´t do that, it will be an 経済的な and 人道的な cultural 大災害."
