11th Hour Racing 長,率いるs 支援する across 大西洋 to Rhode Island

SAN DIEGO (AP) - With the coronavirus pandemic 影響する/感情ing sailing as much as it has other sports, an American-based team planning to compete in the next Ocean Race will relocate from フラン 支援する to Rhode Island.

Newport-based 11th Hour Racing will leave フラン on Saturday 船内に its 60-foot 失敗させる/負かすing monohull on a trans-大西洋 voyage that will take だいたい 11 days.

It will give the sailors a chance to get 支援する in their element after a long pandemic-軍隊d shutdown and to 実験(する) everything from a 過激な new hydrofoil to a 衝突/不一致-avoidance system.

"Given the 不確定 of the world, we want to be closer to home and closer to our sponsor," Charlie Enright, co-船長/主将 along with fellow Brown alum 示す Towill, said in a phone interview.

The team has been off since December 予定 to the pandemic and a boat retrofit. The next 版 of the Ocean Race had been scheduled to start in October 2021 but has been 押し進めるd 支援する a year.

"That´s had a very 劇の 影響 to planning and 操作/手術s," Towill said. "We´ve just been trying to stay 安全な and take this thing 本気で."

Towill said the 乗組員 has an 広範囲にわたる COVID 政策 in place, and has 設立する there´s a 罰金 balance between trying to keep the program moving along while 存在 安全な and responsible.

"We´ve been wearing masks while sailing in フラン, living together, essentially 存在 in a 泡. When we 始める,決める sail, we´ll definitely be in a 泡 on the boat."

The boat will be sailed with the normal 乗組員 of four males and one 女性(の), 加える onboard reporter Amory Ross.

Towill, the team CEO, was scheduled to make the voyage but had to tend to a personal 問題/発行する in Hawaii. He is 存在 取って代わるd by Justin Shaffer, who is in 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 of special 事業/計画(する)s.

Also on the 乗組員 are 退役軍人 ocean racer Simon Fisher of Britain, former America´s Cup 支持する/優勝者 Kyle Langford of Australia and 2017-18 Ocean Race 関係者 Emily Nagel of Bermuda.

Fisher won the Volvo Ocean Race in 2014-15 as 航海士 of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and sailed with Enright and Towill in the 2017-18 VOR.

Langford sailed every offshor e 脚 with third-place finisher Team Brunel in 2017-18. He won the America´s Cup in 2013 with Oracle Team USA and was with the Australian team that won the 就任の SailGP 肩書を与える last year.

The voyage will give the 乗組員 a 広大な/多数の/重要な 適切な時期 to 実験(する) a new hydrofoil.

"存在 in the middle of the ocean is the best way to get hours on the water," Towill said. "When you´re day sailing, you only get a few hours of 質 sailing, but when you sail across an ocean, it´s 24/7.

The team is committed to ocean health. With the 量 of trash 増加するing in the oceans, the 乗組員 will 実験(する) a 衝突/不一致-avoidance system called OSCAR.

"It´s a growing 関心 for us," Towill said. "We have 観察するd more and 海洋 破片 in the ocean, which has been at the 最高の,を越す of our minds."

Towill and Enright said the 量 of microplastics in the oceans is staggering.

"It´s not what you see, it´s what you don´t see," Enright said. "If you´re looking for a visual, watching a refrigerator float by is scary. We wouldn´t want to 攻撃する,衝突する that with the new 失敗させる/負かす."

The 乗組員 finished second and first on the race´s last two 脚s.

Towill and Enright aren´t daunted by what can happen on the high seas.

"I think that´s part of what this race is all about," Towill said. "You try to do your 準備 and planning, and 必然的に you do the best 職業 you can 取引,協定ing with what you didn´t 準備する for and what it throws at you."
