German QB with 'big arm' has big 計画(する)s for TCU career

When you are a German quarterback 準備するing to play big-time college football in America, there's going to be a learning curve.

Like the time Alexander Honig met Jim Harbaugh but hadn't known that the Michigan 長,率いる coach played 14 NFL seasons.

"I only knew him as a coach at first," Honig said. "My dad told me that he played for Chicago and some other teams, and that he played for Michigan 同様に."

No worries, though, because what he 欠如(する)d in knowledge of gridiron history, he made up for in size, 技術s and 可能性のある. The 18-year-old Honig is taking his talents from Bavaria to Texas - he has committed to play at TCU on a scholarship beginning next year - with dreams of becoming an NFL QB.

Standing nearly 6-foot-6 and 重さを計るing 235 続けざまに猛撃するs with a strong arm, Honig looks the part. Sounds it, too. In fluent English, he explains that he needs to outwork competitors and 勝利,勝つ over doubters because patience may be 限られた/立憲的な for the German kid playing the most important position.

"特に in Texas, football is like a 宗教 負かす/撃墜する there," he said. "They don´t want to have a European losing their games."

Even with TCU's opener against SMU 延期するd because of the coronavirus pandemic, Honig is itching to watch games online and かもしれない …に出席する a home game this season. He 計画(する)s to 公式に 調印する in December - the earliest 適切な時期 for 新採用するs to do so - and 最終的に move to Texas in January.

"I´m getting goosebumps thinking about it," he said.

Honig, who finished high school in July just south of Nuremberg, hasn't played this season because his German club league was 延期するd. He's working out on his own and 熟考する/考慮するing 弁護s through Jordan Palmer's online program.

Brandon Collier, an American who runs PPI 新採用するs out of Germany, said it's a "抱擁する feat" for a European to earn a 力/強力にする Five scholarship. Baylor also 申し込む/申し出d Honig a scholarship, as did Massachusetts.

"It´s pretty rare to be 新採用するd as a European quarterback," said Collier, a 34-year-old former UMass 防御の lineman. "Imagine when he gets the coaching for the next three to five years at TCU what his 天井 can be."

Collier met Honig almost four years ago - when Honig was 6-foot-3 - and brought him on several trips to the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs.

"He wants to be the first European NFL quarterback," Collier said. "You have guys who have been coached by 広大な/多数の/重要な quarterback coaches for 10-12 years who he´s competing against. That´s going to be a 障害物. He has a big, strong arm, but he needs to 改善する on his mechanics and 配達/演説/出産. That´s going to take coaching and repetition."

Virginia 新採用するd Luke Wentz, also a German, as a quarterback but moved him to wide receiver last year. Honig and Wentz worked out together this summer.

A Penn 明言する/公表する coach told Honig he'd make a terrific tight end, but Horned Frogs 不快な/攻撃 調整者/コーディネーター and QB coach Sonny Cumbie didn't take any 運動競技の 測定s of Honig during the TCU (軍の)野営地,陣営 last July. He only watched him throw and then 申し込む/申し出d the scholarship. In conversations with him since then, Cumbie hasn't discussed a position change, Honig said.

"So I feel like, going in there, they want me to play quarterback," Honig said, although he 追加するd that he's "not going to be stubborn" if it doesn't work.

"We'll see how I stack up against the other QBs," said Honig, who 推定する/予想するs to be redshirted next year.

二重の-脅し quarterback Trent 戦う/戦い of Daphne, Alabama, has also committed to TCU and at 6-foot-1 and 195 続けざまに猛撃するs is more like 現在の Frogs quarterback Max Duggan.

Honig´s American football adventure started with a bus trip - with his father, James, at the wheel. Collier arranged the 2017 summer road trip that brought European 希望に満ちたs to U.S. (軍の)野営地,陣営s.

That´s when then-15-year-old Honig met Harbaugh and 認めるd him as the former 長,率いる coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Harbaugh "was intrigued by my size and by my 技術s," Honig said, 含むing his 11-インチ 手渡すs.

There were more (軍の)野営地,陣営s - and more U.S. trips - with his dad 運動ing a second time, and workouts for coaches from West Virginia, Duke and South Carolina.

Honig, who first played quarterback at the age of 13, was "a hard sell" because coaches are 気が進まない to take 危険s at the position, Collier said.

Even with the TCU 申し込む/申し出 in his 支援する pocket, Honig returned to the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs in March and competed in a 競争相手s (軍の)野営地,陣営. He took home the quarterback 最高殊勲選手 トロフィー. He didn't go there looking for more 申し込む/申し出s.

"For me, it´s always 決定的な to get my 指名する out in the U.S. football world because I think they still don´t like the idea of having a European quarterback," he said. "I try to 証明する them wrong with every chance I get."

Honig, whose father played American football in Germany, said the NFL is "the end goal, but 権利 now I´m trying to 焦点(を合わせる) on getting playing time at TCU."

His choice of college was an 平易な 決定/判定勝ち(する).

"Texas is on another level. To see the big roads and the 選ぶ-ups. It just what you think about when you think about America," Honig said. "I´m going to get a 広大な/多数の/重要な American experience when I get there."
