The first 黒人/ボイコット man to 勝利,勝つ the lifetime 業績/成就 メダル in its 32 year history, Mosley is の中で the most acclaimed 罪,犯罪 小説家s of his time, even if he 拒絶するs 存在 called anything but a writer. He has received 非常に/多数の prizes, from an Edgar Award for best mystery novel to an O. Henry prize for short stories to a Grammy for his liner 公式文書,認めるs to the Richard Pryor anthology "... And It´s 深い Too!" He is also 井戸/弁護士席 known to 国家の 調書をとる/予約する Awards 公式の/役人s, having 以前は served on the 創立/基礎´s board of directors and once hosting the awards 儀式. But like such previous メダル 勝利者s as Ray Bradbury and Elmore Leonard, he has never been 指名するd for a 国家の 調書をとる/予約する Award in a 競争の激しい 部類.

Mosley knows 井戸/弁護士席 the 推論する/理由: 罪,犯罪 fiction is usually bypassed when 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)s for a year´s best 調書をとる/予約するs are considered.

"Mosley is undeniably prolific, but what 始める,決めるs his work apart is his examination of both コンビナート/複合体 問題/発行するs and intimate realities through the レンズ of characters in his fiction, 同様に as his 遂行するd historical narrative 作品 and essays," Lucas said. "His oeuvre and his lived experience are distinctly part of the American experience. And as such, his 出資/貢献s to our culture make him more than worthy of the 創立/基礎´s メダル for Distinguished Contributi on to American Letters."

Mosley doesn't see himself as a 罪,犯罪 小説家 even when he's 令状ing about Rawlins, through whom he has 調査するd Los Angeles and the country in the 地位,任命する-World War II 時代. He thinks of his 調書をとる/予約するs いっそう少なく for their 陰謀(を企てる)s than for the 合成物 見解(をとる) they 申し込む/申し出 of 黒人/ボイコット men in the U.S., or more 特に 黒人/ボイコット heroes, whether Rawlins, the philosopher Socrates Fortlow or the mail clerk in the short story, "Pet 飛行機で行く," part of his 近づいている collection "The ぎこちない 黒人/ボイコット Man."

"When I think about writers like Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Ross Macdonald, I don't like those writers because they are 罪,犯罪 writers but because of what they tell me about people. In my own work, I'm 現実に trying to understand human nature," he says, 追加するing that he considers "The ぎこちない 黒人/ボイコット Man" a showcase for "黒人/ボイコット characters who don't make it into the stories we tell."

As always, Mosley is busy working on 未来 調書をとる/予約するs, 含むing another 平易な Rawlins novel, 始める,決める in Los Angeles during the late 1960s. It's a chance for Mosley to revisit an 時代 of 抗議するs against the Vietnam War, and to see it through the 視野 of Rawlins, a World War II 退役軍人.

"平易な changes as he gets older and the world changes, so 取引,協定ing with that world becomes a different thing," Mosley says. "I'm always 令状ing about something new and my character hopefully has some things to say. When I started working on the Rawlins novels, I had been talking about my father, but after (the 2007 novel) `Blonde 約束´ I realized I was talking about myself."

Mosley will 正式に receive the メダル during a Nov. 18 儀式 that will be held online because of the coronavirus pandemic. Mosley's friend and fellow author Edwidge Danticat will introduce him. The 創立/基礎 also will 栄誉(を受ける) Carolyn Reidy, the late CEO of Simon & Schuster, who will be given the Literarian Award for 優れた service on に代わって of 調書をとる/予約するs and reading.
