EXPLAINER: From 1800, a lesson in 延期するd 選挙 results
The tempestuous 選挙 of 2020 has been rife with 予測s of 混乱 and cataclysm, with 警告s that a contested 戦う／戦い could last 井戸／弁護士席 into December.
It has happened before. Take 1800, for example.
The two parties were in bitter 対立. The 連邦主義者s 指名するd John Adams for a second 称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語; the "Democratic-共和国の／共和党のs" chose Thomas Jefferson. The 投票（する）ing, as retold by historian Jill Lepore in "These Truths: A History of the 部隊d 明言する／公表するs," did not take place on a 選び出す／独身 day - it was 行為／行うd from March to November.
Of a 全住民 of 5.23 million people, only 600,000 could 投票（する）. All but three of the 16 明言する／公表するs 制限するd 選挙権／賛成 to 所有物／資産／財産 支えるもの／所有者s or taxpayers; only in Maryland could 解放する／自由な-born 黒人／ボイコットs 投票（する）, and only in New Jersey did women have 選挙権／賛成. (Both （法などの）抜け穴s would の近くに in a few years.)
And only in Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Virginia could 投票者s cast 投票（する）s for 委任する／代表s to the 選挙（人）の College. さもなければ, the 投票（する）s were for 立法議員s who would cast their 明言する／公表する's 投票（する）s. Nowhere did 投票者s cast 投票（する）s for 大統領の 候補者s.
The 候補者s themselves did not （選挙などの）運動をする in those days, but the 選挙 was a raucous one. The 共和国の／共和党のs attacked Adams as a would-be 君主, 特記する／引用するing the 外国人 and Sedition 行為／法令／行動するs. And the 連邦主義者s （刑事）被告 Jefferson of 存在 an atheist. The 連邦主義者 newspaper The Gazette of the 部隊d 明言する／公表するs, in a 報告（する）／憶測 that might sound familiar today, wrote that Americans would choose between "GOD - AND A RELIGIOUS PRESIDENT" and "JEFFERSON - AND NO GOD!!!!"

Adams lost the 選挙. But it was not （疑いを）晴らす who won it, thanks to a quirk in the 憲法, which did not separate the 選挙s of the 大統領，／社長 and the 副／悪徳行為 大統領，／社長. As a result, Jefferson and his running mate, Aaron Burr - yes, the same Aaron Burr who would kill Alexander Hamilton in a duel four years later - were tied with 73 投票（する）s apiece.
Because one of the 共和国の／共和党の 委任する／代表s failed to 投票（する） against Burr - which would have made Jefferson the 勝利者 - the race was thrown into the House, which was 支配するd by the 連邦主義者s. Hamilton worked to 納得させる his fellow 連邦主義者s to support Jefferson (who was, he said, "by far not so dangerous a man" as Burr).
It took until February 1801, but the House selected Jefferson over his running mate.
That シナリオ would never recur. In 1804, the 12th 改正 分裂（する） the 選挙 of the 大統領，／社長 and 副／悪徳行為 大統領，／社長.
