Cooper Hewitt acquires two emoji that symbolize 傾向

NEW YORK (AP) - The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum has acquired two emoji that have helped broaden 多様制 for 使用者s of the tiny pictures, becoming the third museum to 追加する emoji to their 数字表示式の collections.

The New York museum acquired the "person with headscarf" and "の間の-skintone couple" emoji for its burgeoning collection of 数字表示式の 資産s. The museum 計画(する)s an 展示 on the significance of the two through interviews and images, but the pandemic has put an 開始 date in limbo, said Andrea Lipps, Cooper Hewitt's associate curator of 同時代の design.

"The 願望(する) to acquire these particular emoji arose from what we were seeing as the 願望(する) for 傾向 and 代表 of さまざまな groups and communities and couples on the emoji keyboard," Lipps told The Associated 圧力(をかける) in an interview ahead of Thursday's 告示.

The hijab emoji, as it's 非公式に known, was submitted in 2016 to the Unicode 国際借款団/連合, a nonprofit that 監督するs emoji 基準s with 投票(する)ing members from the world's 最高の,を越す 数字表示式の companies. It arrived on phones and computers in 2017. A then 15-year-old Saudi Arabian girl, Rayouf Alhumedhi, attracted 世界的な attention as she (選挙などの)運動をするd for its 傾向. She was selected as one of Time magazine's most 影響力のある teens of 2017.

概略で 550 million women in the world wear the hijab, Alhumedhi の中で them, yet there was no emoji to 代表する them. The same was true of 肌 トンs, and 支持するs remain vigilant in getting multiracial family emoji on keyboards, beyond the two-person couple 選択s.

The interracial couple emoji was submitted to Unicode in 2018 and arrived on 装置s last year, giving people their first chance to 連合させる 多重の 肌 トンs in a 選び出す/独身 emoji. It builds on the advocacy work of Katrina Parrott, a 黒人/ボイコット, Houston-based entrepreneur 奮起させるd to create diverse 肌 トンs in emoji after her daughter lamented she couldn't 適切に 代表する herself on keyboards.

As a third-party developer, Parrott was the first to put out multiracial emoji through her own app, iDiversicons, five years ago. She 支持するd as a 非,不,無-投票(する)ing member of Unicode for the 国際借款団/連合 to do the same for a wide array of 装置s. A (選挙などの)運動をする 主要な to the 傾向 of interracial couples, later spearheaded by the dating app Tinder and others, received a Webby Award last year. Parrott was not 伴う/関わるd in 開発 of the couples emoji but 公式文書,認めるd the significance in 促進するing greater 多様制.

Parrott had n o technical experience when she took on her 事業/計画(する), but as a former 航空宇宙局 契約 労働者 in 兵たん業務, she knew how to put together a team.

"We said we don't want to do just an app for African Americans. We want to 代表する the world because everybody was feeling the 欠如(する) in emojis," Parrott told the AP of her 開拓するing app. "We did African American 肌 トン, we did Asian, Caucasian, folks from India and those who are Latino and Hispanic. We covered all the bases."

Now 19 and a sophomore at Stanford University, Alhumedhi said she decided to get 伴う/関わるd after realizing she had no way to 代表する herself in a WhatsApp group 雑談(する) with friends when they switched from photos to emoji in their profiles. She つまずくd across a Snapchat story on how to 服従させる/提出する a 提案 for new emoji to the Unicode 国際借款団/連合, where 激しい hitters like Apple, Twitter, Facebook and more decide what emoji are 解放(する)d for companies to choose from.

マスコミ attention flowed after Reddit co-創立者 Alexis Ohanion 容易にするd an Ask Me Anything 開会/開廷/会期 for Alhumedhi on his 壇・綱領・公約 to get the word out on her emoji (選挙などの)運動をする. She also received help from Emojination´s Jennifer 8. 物陰/風下.

"We talked about how 代表 is so important, even if it appears in such a small way," Alhumedhi told the AP from Vienna, where she's waiting out her return to her California campus. "We also 手配中の,お尋ね者 to 誘発する/引き起こす a 対話 about the hijab itself and what it means in today's 数字表示式の age. I saw a lot of people having very big opinions about the hijab without really discussing it with someone who wears it or doing その上の introspection into what it means."

The hijab and interracial couples emoji were designed by Aphelandra Messer, who was working at the time for Emojination, a grassroots group that 支持するs for more inclusive and 代表者/国会議員 emoji.

The designs have "衝撃d billions of keyboards 世界的な and reframed how people have seen themselves on the small 審査する. It´s amazing to see their historic work arc 蜂の巣d in the nation´s greatest museums for 現在の fans and 未来 scholars," said 物陰/風下, 生産者 of "The Emoji Story," a new 文書の film out Friday, and co-創立者 of Emojination.

The Cooper Hewitt 告示 follows the 2016 取得/買収 of the 初めの DoCoMo emoji 始める,決める by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. DoCoMo is a 最高の,を越す 動きやすい phone 操作者 in Japan, where emoji began. In 2018, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London acquired the 提案するd mosquito emoji design. All are part of a larger 成果/努力 for museums and cultural 会・原則s to 保存する 重要な parts of 数字表示式の history and culture.
