不死鳥／絶品 to 栄誉（を受ける） late civil 権利s icon Calvin C. Goode
PHOENIX (AP) - 不死鳥／絶品 city 公式の／役人s, 居住（者）s and 目だつ members of the 黒人／ボイコット community will 栄誉（を受ける） late civil 権利s icon, city leader and longtime Arizona 居住（者） Calvin Coolidge Goode in the coming weeks.
Goode died on Dec. 23 from an illness not 関係のある to COVID-19. He was 93.
A 事実上の 記念の service is scheduled for Tuesday. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, it will be livestreamed online by the Historic Tanner Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church on Facebook.
Next week, the city will celebrate the ツバメ Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday with a 事実上の award 儀式 栄誉（を受ける）ing the newest honoree of the Calvin C. Goode Lifetime 業績／成就 Award.
The events follow a public, open-casket 見解（をとる）ing hosted on Saturday outside of the former city hall, 改名するd after Goode. Dozens of people gathered donning facial coverings and 株ing memories in 祝賀 of Goode's life.
市長 Kate Gallego said it was a rare occurrence to have someone laid in 明言する／公表する in the city. But she also said it was an 栄誉（を受ける） for her and the city to celebrate his life in 前線 of a building 指名するd after him - one of only two buildings in 不死鳥／絶品 指名するd for city 公式の／役人s.

Goode was the second 黒人／ボイコット councilmember for the city of 不死鳥／絶品 and the longest-任期d elected 公式の／役人 in its history, serving on the 不死鳥／絶品 City 会議 from Jan. 2, 1972 until Jan. 3, 1994, 含むing as 副／悪徳行為 市長 in 1974 and 1984.
Goode often 同意しないd with other 会議 members during his 22-year 任期, 投票（する）ing in the 1980s against freeway 拡大 事業／計画（する）s he argued would destroy 近隣s already struggling to 修理 from segregation.
As late as 1960, half of the 黒人／ボイコット 居住（者）s in 不死鳥／絶品 lived south of downtown, and the 隣接地の city of Tempe was considered a "sundown town" where 黒人／ボイコット people could work during the day but had to be gone by nightfall or 危険 逮捕（する） or physical 暴力／激しさ.
Goode spent his time fighting to 改善する the 質 of life in 不死鳥／絶品 for low-income 黒人／ボイコット 居住（者）s long after his last days on the 会議. He retired in 1994, but continued 支持するing for equal 適切な時期, affordable 住宅 and education through 多重の organizations, 含むing the Eastlake 近隣 協会 and the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural 中心.

"I´m not 圧倒するd with grief because he lived until he was 93 and was active until his last moments," Stewart told The Associated 圧力（をかける）. "I'm thankful to God he was able to be around. I´m filled with lots of thanksgiving."
Mary Rose Wilcox 株d in Stewart's 感情, calling Goode a "very 原則d and grounded man, who brought the 権利 面s of his Christian 約束 and 原則s into public service."

Wilcox, who was the first Hispanic women to serve on both the City 会議 and the Maricopa 郡 Board of 監督者s, said Goode was on the 会議 when she was elected in 1982.
"He was a 助言者 to me and took me under his wing. We became really good 同僚s and formed a strong coal ition 代表するing south, west and intercity 不死鳥／絶品. We served together for a １０年間 and were very much 伴う／関わるd in civil 権利s and human 権利s," Wilcox said, 追加するing that he was unafraid to speak on に代わって of the 黒人／ボイコット and Latino communities.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego said Goode "left our 近隣s and this world better than he 設立する it, and that is a 遺産／遺物 that his family, his friends, and all who knew him should 持つ／拘留する dear."
Goode is 生き残るd by three sons, six grandchildren and two 広大な／多数の／重要な-grandchildren. His wife, Georgie, who he married in 1960, died in 2015. She was 87.
