Texas 民主党員s see ストライキ as the way out of party 低迷

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Jasmine Crockett, a 黒人/ボイコット civil 権利s lawyer and one of the youngest 国会議員s in Texas, was just a few months into her first 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 in the 立法機関 when 共和国の/共和党のs were on the cusp of passing new 限界s on when and how Texans could 投票(する).

Like other 民主党員s, she was adamantly …に反対するd to the 法案. But when they discussed using 驚くべき/特命の/臨時の 策略 to try to 封鎖する it - 含むing a ストライキ - she sensed hesitancy from older, 退役軍人 members who are more accustomed to 存在 the 少数,小数派 party in the 明言する/公表する 衆議院.

"I don´t understand. Why are we sitting here?" Crockett, 40, 解任するd of the 失望/欲求不満 の中で her younger 同僚s. "We´re asking 合法的 questions, like, `Can´t we leave? What is the problem?´"

When Texas 民主党員s bolted for Washington in a 劇の gambit to 封鎖する the 法案, it was a 重要な 戦略の victory for Crockett and a group of newer Texas 国会議員s, 含むing 黒人/ボイコット and Latino members, whose instincts are more inclined to confrontational politics. If their long-苦しむing party is to find a way out of the wilderness in Texas, 民主党員s need to sharpen their message and their 肘s, they argue.

"The demographics are there for someone to 勝利,勝つ Texas 権利 now. I don´t think it can be someone who is 完全に 手段d. They have to be loud and outspoken," said Crockett, who is the only first-称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 黒人/ボイコット 立法議員 in a 明言する/公表する (ワシントンの)連邦議会議事堂 that still is mostly older and white.

As Texas 民主党員s entered the second week of their 抵抗 Monday, they continued their マスコミ blitz and their 会合s with members of 議会. Chris Turner, chairman of the Texas House 民主党員s, said they would 会合,会う with House 大多数 Whip Jim Clyburn on Tuesday.

Turner told MSNBC on Monday night, "This was the only 選択 we had if we´re going to stop Greg Abbott and other 共和国の/共和党のs from making it harder for Texans to 投票(する)."

To run out the clock on the GOP's 広範囲にわたる 選挙s 法案 支援する home, 民主党員s must stay out of Texas for 19 more days, at which point 共和国の/共和党の Gov. Abbott says he will すぐに call another special 開会/開廷/会期 to try for a third time to pass the 手段.

全国的な, younger 進歩/革新的なs elected to office are 押し進めるing a more 積極的な 戦略 within the Democratic Party, most 顕著に in their calls to rewrite 上院 支配するs and do away with the filibuster - it stands in the way of 連邦の 投票(する)ing 権利s 法律制定 that Texas 民主党員s say is their best hope of blunting new GOP 制限s 支援する home. A 類似の dynamic spurred the first 劇の ストライキ in May, though Texas 民主党員s remain more 統一するd.

Still, they 認める wanting their party to take a harder 辛勝する/優位 as the GOP 器具/実施するs a far-reaching 保守的な 協議事項 after 大統領 Donald Trump lost his 企て,努力,提案 for reelection in November.

"They tend to be a little more combative," said Rice University professor 示す Jones, a political scientist who has 得点する/非難する/20d Texas 国会議員s' partisanship since 2009. "The older style would have been to have worked this out behind the scenes. The younger style is more to make it public and make it more of a 抗議する movement."

Jones is skeptical that it helps 民主党員s´ 追求(する),探索(する) to flip America´s biggest red 明言する/公表する in the long run.

"It´s inextricably linked Texas 民主党員s to 国家の 民主党員s, who are やめる 人気がない in Texas," he said.

The demographics of the Texas 立法機関 港/避難所't much changed with the arrival of younger 民主党員s. White 候補者s in 2018 flipped most of the dozen, おもに 郊外の seats 民主党員s 選ぶd up in the House, where 共和国の/共和党のs have an 83-67 大多数.

The 緊急発進する to leave Austin under the 脅し of 逮捕(する) (機の)カム as 民主党員s remain stumped by a riddl e they have not 割れ目d in 27 years: how to 勝利,勝つ a statewide race in Texas. Even now, いっそう少なく than a year before the 2022 予備選挙s, 民主党員s still have no 候補者 for 知事. They are waiting for an answer from former 下院議員 Beto O´Rourke, but if he doesn´t run, there is but one other 目だつ 人物/姿/数字 flirting with a challenge to Abbott - actor Matthew McConaughey. It's 不明瞭な what, if any, party McConaughey would run under.

In Texas, 民主党員s are fond of looking to Georgia, where 黒人/ボイコット leaders and 進歩/革新的なs 動員するd 投票者s and helped flip one of America's most reliably red 明言する/公表するs in November. But Texas 民主党員s also have a poor 跡をつける 記録,記録的な/記録する of 予測, seldom more glaring than last year when 大規模な 期待s 創立者d, 含むing a 失敗 to 選ぶ up 付加 州議会議事堂 seats that would have 支えるd their chances of stopping or 弱めるing a 投票(する)ing 法案.

Instead, the results emboldened Texas 共和国の/共和党のs, who (機の)カム away seeing new 適切な時期 with Latinos. Of the Texas 民主党員s who stayed behind, several are from 地区s on the U.S.-Mexico 国境.

"I would say we are at Georgia five years ago, Arizona five years ago," said Texas 明言する/公表する Rep. James Talarico, 32, who is the youngest House 民主党員. "It was young people and young leaders, in particular, that led those 明言する/公表するs out of the political wilderness. And I think this 定足数 break perfectly encapsulates this new, fighting spirit."

共和国の/共和党のs call it a fight that 民主党員s will 必然的に lose.

"For many years there was a distinction, I think, between Texas 政府 and D.C.," 共和国の/共和党の 明言する/公表する Rep. Mayes Middleton said. "And unfortunately ... this younger 味方する of the (政党の)幹部会,党集会 is pulling the Texas 立法機関 more に向かって the direction of D.C. where you have this 分割."

The GOP's 投票(する)ing 法案 in Texas would 禁止(する) 24-hour 投票ing places, 禁じる 投票(する) 減少(する) boxes and 権力を与える 同志/支持者 投票 選挙立会人s, moves that 民主党員s say are designed to 抑える and 脅迫してさせる 投票者s. 共和国の/共和党のs are continuing to show up at the 明言する/公表する (ワシントンの)連邦議会議事堂, even though they can't pass any 法律s, calling the 法案s 保護(する)/緊急輸入制限s that have nothing to do with Trump's loss to 民主党員 Joe Biden last year.

But as recently as last week, 明言する/公表する Sen. Larry Taylor, the 上院 GOP 議長,司会を務める, would not 認める that Biden rightfully won the 選挙.

"I don't know that. I hear a lot of discussion about it. There's been no real 調査 on that," Taylor said while 主要な a news 会議/協議会 defending the 法案.

Trump has 誤って (人命などを)奪う,主張するd that he was robbed of a second 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 because of 大規模な 投票者 詐欺 全国的な. In fact, (人命などを)奪う,主張するs of 大規模な 詐欺 have been 反駁するd by 非常に/多数の 裁判官s, 明言する/公表する 選挙 公式の/役人s and even Trump's own 行政 after the 選挙.

It is those 肉親,親類d of comments that 民主党員s say 正当化する the extreme 対策 they are taking to try 妨害するing the 法案. O'Rourke said he has raised more than $600,000 to keep the absent 民主党員s afloat. They were 始める,決める to appear in a town hall on MSNBC on Monday, although that was 規模d 支援する after members of the 代表 実験(する)d 肯定的な for the coronavirus.

Texas 明言する/公表する Rep. Jessica Gonzalez, who was 投票(する)ing 保護 director in Nevada during 大統領 Barack Obama's reelection (選挙などの)運動をする, won her seat in 2018 by challenging a 29-year House 現職の in a 最初の/主要な and itched for harder fights over 問題/発行するs like women's health and LGBT 権利s. "I was 失望させるd, you know, that we were getting attacked," said the 40-year-old Gonzalez, who is Latina.

Two years later, she was 選ぶd as 副/悪徳行為 議長,司会を務める of the House 選挙s 委員会.

"They're the ones 主要な the 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金," said Democratic 明言する/公表する Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, who was first elected in 2000. "They deserve a lot of credit."
