女性(の) surfers 打ち勝つ sexism's (死傷者)数 to earn Olympic 寝台/地位

LEMOORE, CALIF. (AP) - Johanne Defay of フラン was 荒廃させるd when the mega sponsor Roxy dropped her 権利 before she became a プロの/賛成の surfer in 2014, 粉々にするing her 信用/信任 and 脅すing her career altogether.

"They were just like `Oh, you don´t look this way, you know, for, like, pictures," Defay said. "And I just felt like I was never doing enough or I wasn´t fitting in, in the way that they 手配中の,お尋ね者 for their brand."

Now, Defay is 長,率いるd to the Tokyo Olympics for surfing´s debut at the Summer Games, ブイ,浮標d by an upset 勝利,勝つ against 統治するing world 支持する/優勝者 Carissa Moore at the high-intensity Surf Ranch 競争 last month.

Though there´s much excitement and 新たにするd enthusiasm for the women´s game, years of objectification, 支払う/賃金 不平等s and an 適切な時期 gap have taken their (死傷者)数. 産業 leaders from the professional World Surf League and the developmental USA Surfing say they´re committed to 権利ing the wrongs that have long held 女性(の) surfers 支援する in the male-支配するd sport.

The mental, 財政上の and logistical roadblocks for women in surfing date 支援する centuries.

Hawaiians who invented the sport 扱う/治療するd it as an egalitarian 国家の pastime that all genders, ages and social classes enjoyed, によれば Isaiah Helekunihi Walker, a Hawaii surfing historian. But Christian missionaries who arrived on the island tried to 禁止(する) surfing in large part because of nudity - surfing naked was ありふれた at the sports' inception. Though 地元のs 大部分は 反抗するd the colonizers, 女性(の) surfers saw their 階級s 縮む 不均衡な.

"When it comes to controlling nudity, it´s about controlling 女性(の) 団体/死体s," said Walker, also a BYU-Hawaii history professor.

Even for Moore, the child prodigy who could (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域 the boys before growing up to be - at 18 years old - the youngest World Surf League 支持する/優勝者 in history, she's said she´s also struggled with her 団体/死体 image. Moore is 28 now and has spoken 率直に about 餓死するing herself as a 十代の少年少女, only to binge eat later, and once even trying to 軍隊 herself to throw up.

"Everyone had this idea of what a surfer girl should look like. And there were a lot of `hot 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)s´ or the 'cutest surfer girl 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる),´" Moore said. "I never made them, but then you see who 現実に made them and you feel like: `Oh, I guess, like, that´s what I should look like.´"

Modern day professional surfing in a previous iteration had a decentralized approach that left brand sponsors in 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 of many of the 競争 兵たん業務, which would 変化させる 広範囲にわたって from one event to another, said Greg Cruse, USA Surfing CEO. And though it wasn´t an 公式の/役人 支配する or 基準, there was 明確に a preference for the men´s game.

Surfing schedules are 決定するd in the morning based on what the ocean waves are like, and it was no secret that the boys' and men´s 競争s would be given the best surf 条件s, usually in the morning. 女性(の) surfers took the 捨てるs, if they were 招待するd at all.

"There´d be the event directors and they would 肉親,親類d of schedule things the way they 手配中の,お尋ね者 to schedule and there would be bias from the outdated patriarchy. It´s changed immensely," Cruse said. "It took a while for the women to complain about it."

A turning point (機の)カム in 2013, when new 所有権 took over the professional league and the rebranded WSL began to prioritize 標準化するing the 競争s and 再構築するing the women´s events, said Jessi Miley-Dyer, a retired プロの/賛成の surfer who now runs the WSL´s 競争 as 上級の 副/悪徳行為 大統領,/社長.

In 2019, the WSL as the leaders of the $10 billion surfing 産業 also began 申し込む/申し出ing equal prize money for all its events, making it one of the few professional sports leagues to 達成する 支払う/賃金 公正,普通株主権.

"It was an important 声明 to make around the value of our 競技者s. More than anything, it speaks to the 強調 on women´s surfing. We believe men and women are valued the same," Miley-Dyer said. "It´s the 権利 thing to do."

The 告示 was emotional for many, 含むing Miley-Dyer. 支援する in 2006 when she won a プロの/賛成の event, she earned just $10,000 - a third of what the 最高の,を越す male surfer took home.

"I cried because it means so much," Miley-Dyer said. "I had also retired, so it wasn´t something for me, but it felt something to me and so many people like me."

Next year will be the first time the WSL will 含む its women surfers at the famous 麻薬を吸う Masters 競争, 許すing them the chance to ride the Banzai Pipeline in Oahu, Hawaii, considered by many the best waves in the world.

The WSL has also committed to hosting the same number of events and in the same 場所s for both the men and women, though the 競争 at the highest level today still has twice as many male competitor 位置/汚点/見つけ出すs - 36 - compared to the women´s game.

ーに関して/ーの点でs of 技術 and experience, the 損失 原因(となる)d by 10年間s of sexism has not yet been fully 逆転するd.

It used to be that girls could begin 競争の激しい surfing training at about 11 years old while boys began as 早期に as 4, Cruse said, 追加するing that USA Surfing has の近くにd this experience gap.

And surfboa rd 製造者s, like many male leaders in the sport, used to believe that girls and women weren´t strong enough to paddle or ride powerfully enough to pull off 空気/公表するs, or 空中の 作戦行動s, so they were given bigger surfboards that are 肉体的に easier to ride, but 限られた/立憲的な their ability to 進歩 into more 爆発性の moves.

So while 空気/公表するs have for years become the gold 基準 in the men´s 競争, it is rarely done by the 最高の,を越す 女性(の) surfers today. Moore, the U.S. surfer to (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域 at the Olympics, is の中で the first women to land an 空気/公表する during 競争, a milestone she 達成するd just recently but has no 疑問 electrified the women´s game and its 未来.

"They started 需要・要求するing getting the same type of 器具/備品 that 許すs you to 生成する more 速度(を上げる) and turn 詐欺師 and harder," Cruse said. "権利 now, there´s a group of girls coming up. The girls under 16 are better at 空気/公表するs than any of the women in the WSL. They already have the 空気/公表する game and it´s next level and there´s going to be a changing of the guard."

For Defay, she persevered during her first year without 法人組織の/企業の 支援. She remembers feeling humiliated 審理,公聴会 others take for 認めるd their 私的な car services arranged by their sponsors after Defay arrived on a two-hour bus ride ーするために save money.

She´s thankful fellow プロの/賛成の surfer Jeremy Flores helped sponsor her "insane" 新人 season, as a nine-month season can cost as much as $80,000 in travel costs alone.

Now, they´re equals, チーム仲間s in Japan on the French Olympic surfing team.

The 27-year-old Defay's 旅行 to the プロの/賛成のs has made her hungrier than ever to 証明する her talents and 価値(がある) at the world's most エリート 冒険的な event. And she'll do it with the 団体/死体 she has learned to 高く評価する/(相場などが)上がる, 関わりなく how any sponsor may have 裁判官d her before.

Though Roxy didn't 答える/応じる to requests for comment on Defay's past 後援 取引,協定, the surfer 宣言するs this:

"I like my shoulders now and my butt," Defay said with a smirk. "It´s just what it is and what makes me surf this way, so I try to celebrate it."
