Whooper swan 全住民s `grew 30 times faster in UK nature reserves´

全住民s of whooper swans have grown 30 times faster inside nature reserves than outside over the past three 10年間s, 研究 has shown.

Scientists from the University of Exeter analysed 観察s of more than 10,000 whooper swans at 22 場所/位置s across the UK ? three of which are managed as nature reserves by the Wildfowl and Wetlands 信用 (WWT).

They said 生き残り 率s were 意味ありげに higher at nature reserves, with many swans moving to 非,不,無-保護するd 場所/位置s because the 全住民 growth was so strong.

Based on their findings, published in the 定期刊行物 訴訟/進行s Of The 国家の 学院 Of Sciences, the 研究員s said the 保護の 影響s of nature reserves could see the wintering whooper swan 全住民 二塁打 by 2030.

熟考する/考慮する author Dr ?Andrea Soriano-Redondo, from the universities of Exeter and Helsinki, said: “保護するd areas are the main 道具 存在 used to 茎・取り除く 拒絶する/低下するs in biodiversity, and there is a growing 合意 that 30% of the 惑星’s surface should be 保護するd by 2030.

“However, the 有効性 of 保護するd areas is not always (疑いを)晴らす ? 特に when 種類 move between 保護するd and 非,不,無-保護するd areas throughout their lives.

“Our findings 供給する strong 証拠 that nature reserves are hugely 有益な for whooper swans, and could 劇的な 増加する their numbers in the UK.”

Whooper swans are usually winter visito rs to the UK from アイスランド, where they spend summers.

These swans have long thin necks, 黒人/ボイコット 脚s and 黒人/ボイコット 法案s with large triangular yellow patches.

Whooper swans look 類似の to another swan 種類 known as Bewick’s swans but are bigger in size with larger beak 場内取引員/株価s.

Using data spanning 30 years, the 研究員s 設立する the 年次の 全住民 growth 率 of whooper swans inside nature reserves was 6%, compared to 0.2% outside reserves.

対策 in place to help wintering swans at the WWT reserves 含むd fox 盗品故買者s, 補足の food, managed roosting 場所/位置s and 追跡(する)ing 禁止(する)s.

Dr Richard Inger, from the Centre for 生態学 and 自然保護 on Exeter’s Penryn Campus in Cornwall, said: “This 全住民 上げる is not 制限するd to the nature reserves ? it created a higher 全住民 濃度/密度, which led some swans to move to 非,不,無-保護するd areas.

“Young swans were most likely to do this, meaning the 利益s of nature reserves 流出/こぼす over to other areas too.”

The 研究員s said even if 保護するd nature reserves are 比較して small and used only for a part of 種類’ life cycles, they can have major 影響s on 全住民s of 移住する birds that 住む them.

David Pickett, centre & reserve 経営者/支配人 at WWT Caerlaverock Wetland Centre, 近づく Dumfries in Scotland, said: “This 研究 shows how 安全な 港/避難所s for wetland 野性生物, like those at WWT Caerlaverock, Welney and ツバメ Mere, can help a 種類 生き残る and 後継する when their 伝統的な homes are under 脅し.

“Many wild birds rely on our 場所/位置s for food and 避難所 and we are committed to creating and 回復するing more of these healthy wetland habitats, which the UK has lost so many of in our 最近の history.”
