Conservationists 勧める Yousaf to 行為/法令/行動する over Indonesian dam 脅し to rare orangutan

Scotland’s First 大臣 is 存在 勧めるd to 介入する in the 議論の的になる construction of a new dam in Indonesia ? a 事業/計画(する) which conservationists 恐れる could 衝撃 on the world’s rarest ape.

選挙運動者s at the Mighty Earth group say the Scottish 政府 is “井戸/弁護士席 placed to do its bit” as the company building the structure also owns and operates 勝利,勝つd farms in Scotland.

The Chinese 明言する/公表する 開発 and 投資 会社/団体 (SDIC) is 現在/一般に building the Batang Toru dam in northern Sumatra, with the 事業/計画(する) said to be 場所/位置d in the heart of the rare Tapanuli orangutan’s natural habitat.

With no more than 800 of the creatures left in 存在, the Tapanuli orangutan has been 述べるd by the World 野性生物 基金 as the most 危うくするd of all 広大な/多数の/重要な apes.

Calls for 活動/戦闘 are coming from across the globe and, ありそうもない as it may seem, the Scottish 政府 is 井戸/弁護士席 placed to do its bit and 会を召集する a 会合 as soon as possible between the developers and international 自然保護 scientists

As Beijing-based SDIC 力/強力にする has a 子会社 会社/堅い, Red 激しく揺する 力/強力にする, which has its (警察,軍隊などの)本部 in Edinburgh, Scottish 政府 大臣s are now 存在 圧力(をかける)d to 介入する.

A letter has been sent to Humza Yousaf, 同様に as biodiversity 大臣 Lorna Slater, from a number of Scottish, Indonesian and international (選挙などの)運動をする groups, together with 関心d scientists.

The groups, 含むing Mighty Earth, Friends of the Earth Scotland, the 大主教 Society of 広大な/多数の/重要な Britain and Orangutan Outreach, told Mr Yousaf that having a “追跡する of 利益(をあげる)s fr om Scottish renewable wealth to a 事業/計画(する) 苦境に陥るd in 論争” would 土台を崩す Scotland’s position as a “全世界の leader on the 保護 of biodiversity”.

Mr Yousaf and Ms Slater are now 存在 asked to “正式に raise this 問題/発行する with SDIC and Red 激しく揺する 力/強力にする, and call for a 会合 between the dam developers and 独立した・無所属 scientists”.

Amanda Horowitz, 上級の director at Mighty Earth, said “the Tapanuli orangutan’s home in the forests of Batang Toru in Sumatra is 存在 destroyed by the construction of a wholly unnecessary and 有毒な dam 事業/計画(する)”.

She 追加するd: “Calls for 活動/戦闘 are coming from across the globe and, ありそうもない as it may seem, the Scottish 政府 is 井戸/弁護士席 placed to do its bit and 会を召集する a 会合 as soon as possible between the developers and international 自然保護 scientists.

“The 脅し is 緊急の and there is no time to lose if we’re to save a 種類, some of our closest 親族s, from 存在 wiped off the 直面する of the Earth.”

Andi Muttaqien, of the Indonesian group Satya Bumi, said: “Who 利益s from the Batang Toru dam? 明確に not the Tapanuli orangutan, whose habitat is under 脅し…

“The dam’s electricity might have been needed in 2015, but now, eight years into construction, there is oversupply in the 地域, with the electricity 予定するd to be sold at an overinflated price.”

Serge Wich, professor of 大主教 biology at Liverpool John Moores University, said: “The Tapanuli orangutan was only identified in 2017, but it has been 概算の that the 全住民 has already halved since the 1980s. Now, there are より小数の than 800 left and that is an 見積(る) from more than 10 years ago so numbers are likely lower now 予定 to the 開発 of the hydro 力/強力にする dam and other activities in the area.

“If the adult p opulation 減少(する)s by more than 1% per year ? that’s より小数の than eight individuals ? the genetic 多様制 could 拒絶する/低下する to the point of no return. So we really need to 停止(させる) any 開発 in the area to 避ける その上の losses.”

労働 MSP Monica Lennon, who has also taken an 利益/興味 in the 問題/発行する, said: “Scotland is a 重要な player in international 開発 and this is a 実験(する) 事例/患者 for our 役割 on the 全世界の 行う/開催する/段階.

“Does this country 支持する/優勝者 biodiversity, 環境の 権利s and 労働者s’ safety, as we would like to think?

“Scottish 大臣s may not be able to stop this 事業/計画(する) 完全な, but the fact that the dam’s developers operate in Scotland gives us a rare 適切な時期 to use a little ‘soft 力/強力にする’ in defence of 労働者s’ 権利s, stopping ecocide and the 生き残り of the world’s most 危うくするd 広大な/多数の/重要な ape.”

A Scottish 政府 spokesperson said: “The Scottish Gover nment has not 供給するd any 基金ing support to Red 激しく揺する 力/強力にする in relation to its 沖合いの/海外の 勝利,勝つd activities in Scotland.

“公式の/役人s last met with Red 激しく揺する 力/強力にする in November 2022 to discuss 進歩 on their 開発 of the インチ Cape 沖合いの/海外の 勝利,勝つd farm off the coast of Angus.

“Scottish 大臣s are committed to 保護するing the natural 環境 and those who call it their home, 危うくするd 種類 特に need our help to 生き残る, and where possible 栄える.

“There is an 緊急の need for 活動/戦闘 at all levels to 取り組む the twin crises of biodiversity loss and 気候 change to 確実にする a nature-肯定的な world and Scotland stands ready to play its part.”
