BRUSSELS, Oct 4 (Reuters) - In a rundown old factory in Belgium, 大破壊/大虐殺 生存者 Simon Gronowski celebrated his 近づいている 90th birthday on Sunday by starring in an オペラ 奮起させるd by his life - a history of love, 約束 and forgiveness 打ち勝つing the darkest 悲劇.

Gronowski was 11 years old and living Brussels when in 1943 Nazis put him, his mother and sister on a train bound for Auschwitz, the 悪名高い death (軍の)野営地,陣営 in Nazi-占領するd Poland.

The train was 簡潔に stopped by three ベルギー 抵抗 闘士,戦闘機s in Boortmeerbeek, 30 kilometres (19 miles) northeast of Brussels. In the 続いて起こるing 大混乱, Gronowski jumped off. He went on to 生き残る World War Two in hiding. His family 死なせる/死ぬd at Auschwitz, where more than 1 million people, mostly Jews, were killed.

"I am here because of a 奇蹟. I jumped out of a death 軍用車隊," said Gronowski. "I was very unhappy when I was 14, 15, 20 years old. I cried a lot. But I never had hate. For me, hate is an illness. That I never had."

Having been a much-loved child gave Gronowski the strength to 打ち勝つ his 悲劇, he said. In honour of his 心にいだくd sister, who was good at classical music and loved jazz, he became a jazz ピアニスト, on 最高の,を越す of his career as a lawyer.

After keeping 静かな for 10年間s about his past, Gronowski decided in the 2000s to 令状 a memoir. That led to a 会合 in 2012 with Koenraad Tinel, the son of Flemish Nazis whose brother had served as the 刑務所,拘置所 guard of Gronowski's family.

Tinel, a sculptor three years younger than Gronowski, asked for forgiveness.

"The children of the Nazis are not 有罪の," Gronowski recounted telling Tinel. "He had the 犯罪 of his father on his shoulders, he felt 有罪の. These words I said were important to him because they (機の)カム from a 犠牲者 of the Nazis."

"Our 苦痛 is not the same. But I understood his 苦痛. And now he is more than a friend. He is my brother."

ODE TO LOVE

近づく ly 80 years since the fateful events, Gronowski's 支援する is hunched with age and he can't stand for long.

But his vivid 注目する,もくろむs, quick smile and gestures give him the 空気/公表する of someone much younger as he 会談 of his life 示すd by the horrors of the 大破壊/大虐殺, which has also been turned into an ode to love of humanity.

British 作曲家 Howard Moody was so 奮起させるd by Gronowski's story after 会合 him at a theatre 業績/成果 several years ago that he wrote an オペラ based on Gronowski's life and his 驚くべき/特命の/臨時の friendship with Tenel.

The オペラ, "PUSH", has been 成し遂げるd several times in Belgium and the UK, but to 示す Gronowski's 90th birthday on Oct. 12, Moody put on a special 業績/成果 on Sunday in which both Gronowski and Tenel appeared, playing themselves.

The 業績/成果 was 行う/開催する/段階d in an old furniture factory 近づく Boortmeerbeek, where Gronowski jumped off the train nearly 80 ears ago, to a rapturous 歓迎会 from an audience of 300.

PUSH mixes classic arias with jazz 挿入するs and choral singing. In one grand scene 始める,決める on the deck of a train carriage, the choir - collectively impersonating Gronowski's mother - 押し進めるs little Simon off the 軍用車隊.

"That's not something to be light or 平易な about. One has to give a sense of 認識/意識性 about what happened and why it happened," said Moody.

"But also this wonderful positivity that he has in his spirit, which is so 奮起させるing. This touched me as much as the 苦痛 of his story."

Later in the play, a Nazi guard ひさまづくs, begging for forgiveness in a powerful aria to which the main protagonist replies in soft, high トンs: "I 許す you."

Gronowski said the オペラ 支持するs peace, 寛容 and 僕主主義. While the past could not be undone, the story carries a prescient message, によれば Tinel.

"It is important today because this story repeats itself 非,不,無-stop all over the world," Tinel said. "We have to keep on giving 証言."

Between their scenes, the 二人組 残り/休憩(する)d on a (法廷の)裁判 on the 行う/開催する/段階, touch ing affectionately and at times wiping away 涙/ほころびs. In the grand finale they embraced each other as they stood with members of the choir singing a piece echoing Gronowski's motto.
