The Machiavellian way: How 'The Prince' can help women at work

NEW YORK, May 3 (Reuters) - When it comes to the status of women in the workplace, there are 10年間s of talk and not enough 活動/戦闘. The gender 支払う/賃金 gap is still enormous, and CEOs are still 圧倒的に male, as are 法人組織の/企業の boards.

Stacey Vanek Smith says we should look to an ありそうもない source to help solve this stubborn problem: Niccolo Machiavelli.

Most people remember the Renaissance-時代 Italian 政治家 from his iconic 調書をとる/予約する on high-school reading 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)s, "The Prince." But Smith, the NPR host and author of the new 調書をとる/予約する "Machiavelli for Women," says his insights about 力/強力にする and 生き残り can be just as 批判的な for navigating the modern workplace.

"I hated that 調書をとる/予約する 支援する in college, but when I re-read it, it helped me understand why the numbers (of women in leadership positions) have been stuck for so long," says Smith, co-host of NPR´s The 指示する人(物) from 惑星 Money. "It 申し込む/申し出s real suggestions and 効果的な advice about how to 伸び(る) 力/強力にする and 持つ/拘留する の上に it, even though it´s 500 years old."

To be sure, the connotations of the 指名する Machiavelli are やめる 消極的な and 残虐な. His advice to Florence´s 支配者 Lorenzo de Medici derived from the historical 状況 of 地域s 絶えず warring with each other, where the prospect of 存在 taken over and wiped out by 競争相手s was a very real 可能性.

If you can get past the いつかs harrowing nature of his counsel, these (疑いを)晴らす-注目する,もくろむd 戦略の 原則s - about how to 評価する 脅しs, 打ち勝つ 障害s and 生き残る in positions of leadership - can be helpful 道具s in your 兵器庫.

ARM YOURSELF WITH INFORMATION

Machiavelli may not have been a 軍の 軍人, but as a 外交官 he did place a high value on another 力/強力にする source - (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状). The more you have of it, the more you can use it to 前進する your career.

"That´s the ultimate advice, 特に for women or marginalized 労働者s," Smith says. "Find out what the typical salary 範囲 is for the position, what your 同僚s are paid, and how much experience they have. Having those facts in a game changer, because most success in 交渉するing comes before you even open your mouth."

ASK FOR MORE

Part of what is 持つ/拘留するing women 支援する in the workplace is systemic, like 差別的な 態度s. But women also do not 支持する for themselves as forcefully as men do. If you´re not even asking for what you want in the first place, then any 交渉 is dead on arrival.

"Men ask for raises and 昇進/宣伝s at five times the 率 that women do," Smith says. "There is so much stuff that is out of your 手渡すs - but this is a 重要な part of the equation that you do have 支配(する)/統制する over as an individual."

DEMONSTRATE 'CRAZY CONFIDENCE'

Even more than actual competence, the best predictor of career success is 信用/信任, Smith says. It´s 解放する/自由な - but it´s definitely a 技術 you have to develop, since it may not come 自然に.

Try to be a little like James Spader´s Robert California character from the sitcom "The Office," Smith advises - who にもかかわらず little 関連した experience, 適用するs at Dunder Mifflin and ends up 存在 任命するd CEO of the entire company within days, 純粋に thanks to his extreme 信用/信任.

NEGOTIATE WITH A NEW MINDSET

The 推論する/理由 why some women shy away from asking for raises and 昇進/宣伝s, Smith says, is that such 状況/情勢s are often perceived as hyper-積極的な, 無-sum games.

Instead, reframe such discussions as a 勝利,勝つ-勝利,勝つ: It is 明白に in the company´s 利益/興味s that you feel valued and produce at your highest level, so work together to 人物/姿/数字 out how to make that happen.

"This is tricky for women, because there can be a (激しい)反発 to too much 侵略," says Smith. "So when I started to think about 交渉s in a more collaborative way, that was the most useful 転換 in mindset for me."

SEIZE THE MOMENT

The pandemic has been horrible so many ways, but it also 転換d the 力/強力にする dynamic of the modern workplace: It is now much more 許容できる to work remotely and to be 取引,協定ing with home and family 問題/発行するs at the same time.

以前, that 欠如(する) of 柔軟性 kept some women out of leadership positions, so now that work-from-home is the new reality for many, there are new pathways to 法人組織の/企業の 力/強力にする, Smith says.
