US pork 会社/堅いs divided over 法案 in 議会 to overturn California animal 福利事業 法律

Aug 2 (Reuters) - Some big U.S. pork 生産者s that have spent money to 従う with a California 法律 要求するing more living space for 確かな farm animals are lukewarm about 法律制定 提案するd in the U.S. 議会 that would overturn the 明言する/公表する 法律.

The 国家の Pork 生産者s 会議 (NPPC), the pork 産業 貿易(する) group, supports the Ending 農業の 貿易(する) 鎮圧 (EATS) 行為/法令/行動する, a 法案 introduced by U.S. 上院議員 Roger Marshall and 代表者/国会議員 Ashley Hinson that would 抑制(する) the ability of 明言する/公表するs to 規制する 農業の 製品s sold within their 国境s.

The 国会議員s have said their 目的(とする) in part is to overturn California's Proposition 12, which 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業s sales in the 明言する/公表する of pork, veal, and eggs from animals whose 住宅 条件s fail to 会合,会う 確かな 基準s.

But Clemens Food Group, the No. 5 pork 加工業者 in the country, said it does not support the EATS 行為/法令/行動する. Other big 生産者s like Hormel, Smithfield and Tyson have said 公然と that they ーするつもりである to 従う with the California 法律 when it takes 影響 Jan. 1.

The NPPC has fought Proposition 12 since it passed by 投票(する) 率先 in 2018. In May, the ロビー group lost a 事例/患者 against the 法律 before the U.S. 最高裁判所.

The group spent $780,000 between April and the end of June ロビーing on 問題/発行するs 含むing the EATS 行為/法令/行動する, によれば public filings.

Animal 福利事業 groups say Proposition 12 is necessary because some (種を)蒔くs and 女/おっせかい屋s are housed in cages so small they cannot turn around.

The NPPC's CEO Bryan Humphreys told Reuters in an email that the 法律 would not 改善する animal 福利事業, would raise costs for hog 生産者s, and could lead to more "観念的な" 明言する/公表する 制限s.

Some pork and egg companies, though, have already 投資するd in bringing a segment of their 生産/産物 into 同意/服従 with Proposition 12.

Clemens, a member of the NPPC, has 投資するd 資本/首都 and time 昇格ing 施設s and training its 農業者s to 従う with the 法律, said COO Chris Carey.

"We 最終的に don´t believe the EATS 行為/法令/行動する is 提携させるd with 進歩 in animal 福利事業," Carey said.

概略で a third of the egg 産業, too, is already in 同意/服従, said Brian Moscogiuri, 全世界の 貿易(する) strategist at egg 供給者 Eggs 制限のない.

Hormel Foods, Smithfield Foods, and Tyson Foods did not 答える/応じる to questions about the EATS 行為/法令/行動する.

If the EATS 行為/法令/行動する passes, food companies could lose the ability to differentiate their 製品 in the marketplace and 法廷,裁判所 a higher price, said Galina Hale, an 経済的なs professor at the University of California-Santa Cruz.

The 法案 could also 無効の over a thousand 明言する/公表する and 地元の public health and safety 規則s because it is 概して written, によれば a 報告(する)/憶測 by Harvard 法律 School's Animal 法律 & 政策 Program.

"Every 面 of this is going to be challenged by one 味方する or another," said Chris Green, the program's (n)役員/(a)執行力のある director.

PASTURED PIGS

If Proposition 12 持つ/拘留するs, more hog farming could look like Randy Hutton, Jr.,'s 操作/手術 in Chestertown, Maryland, a 田舎の town on the 明言する/公表する's Eastern Shore.

Hutton Jr. raises hogs for Niman Ranch, a 子会社 of meat company Purdue Farms that advertises its high animal 福利事業 基準s. His 妊娠している (種を)蒔くs are kept in a 盗品故買者d pasture, rather than the gestation crates ありふれた in confinement hog farming, and have at least 35 square feet each to move around, he told Reuters during a 最近の visit.

Niman Ranch …に反対するs the EATS 行為/法令/行動する. All of its 750 ranchers are in 同意/服従 with Proposition 12, said 副/悪徳行為 大統領,/社長 of communications Kerri McClimen.

Hutton Jr. said he was drawn to raising (種を)蒔くs on pasture because it was いっそう少なく expensive than building a confinement barn, which can cost 上向き of $700,000.

"We were looking for more diversification," he said. "This was affordable." (報告(する)/憶測ing by Leah Douglas; Editing by David Gregorio)
