Le Pen's far 権利 注目する,もくろむs 伸び(る)s in depressed French north

By Ingrid Melander

DENAIN, フラン, Oct 14 (Reuters) - The northern French town of Denain has been a left-wing bastion for 世代s. Not any more.

The feeling that mainstream 政治家,政治屋s have failed runs high まっただ中に the 20,000 inhabitants of a place where the poverty 率, as 手段d by income, is three times the 国家の 普通の/平均(する).

"Everybody's fed up. There is 記録,記録的な/記録する-high 失業, the 地域 is really poor, it's getting worse and worse. So people think: why not the 国家の 前線?" retired トラックで運ぶ driver Philippe Broutard said as he 分配するd ちらしs for the far-権利 party in the depressed former 採掘 town.

The 誘惑 to 投票(する) for the anti-Europe, anti-移民/移住 国家の 前線 (FN) in 地域の 選挙s in Denain goes 井戸/弁護士席 beyond party 行動主義者s.

"The 権利 did not work, the left did not work. There's a third 選択, why not try it?" Red Cross volunteer Pascal Fremaux said of the FN during a coffee break at the 援助(する) group's Denain 前提s, where food 小包s are 手渡すd out.

"We have so many problems that maybe it won't 改善する things either, but at least people will have tried that 選択 too."

Northern フラン has long been a 要塞/本拠地 of 大統領 Francois Hollande's 社会主義者 party, which now run both Denain and the wider 地域.

But Denain is just one of the towns where 投票者s who feel left out are 脅し ening to turn politics upside 負かす/撃墜する by switching to the FN, shunning both the 社会主義者s and the 保守的な 共和国の/共和党のs led by former 大統領,/社長 Nicolas Sarkozy.

Opinion 投票s 示唆する FN 長,指導者 海洋 Le Pen, the 最高の,を越す 候補者 on the party's ticket in northern フラン, will 勝利,勝つ the first 一連の会議、交渉/完成する of the December 選挙 and probably also the second 一連の会議、交渉/完成する, in which the 最高の,を越す 候補者s 直面する off.

In 選挙s to the European 議会 last year, in which the FN (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域 both the 社会主義者s and the centre-権利, Le Pen attracted nearly twice the level of support in Denain that she won in フラン 全体にわたる. She sees the 近づいている 地域の 投票(する) as a springboard for the 2017 大統領の 選挙.

BOARDED-UP SHOPS

After 後継するing her father as party leader in 2011, Le Pen has 努力する/競うd to shed the FN's anti-Semitic image and re-position it as 申し込む/申し出ing ordinary 国民s 保護 against the 経済的な fallout from globalisation. Her father, ジーンズ-Marie, supported economically 自由主義の 政策s in favour of small 商売/仕事.

"For public services, it's 海洋," reads one of the posters on 陳列する,発揮する in Denain. "It's possible to bring 失業 負かす/撃墜する," say the ちらしs 分配するd at the market.

This strikes a chord in a town where paint peels off the 伝統的な brick houses, shuttered shops scar the main street and の近くに to one in three people are 失業した, nearly three times the 国家の 普通の/平均(する).

The 失業率 in Denain rose from 25.2 パーセント in 2007 to 31.2 パーセント in 2012, the last year for which 公式の/役人 data from a 国家の 国勢(人口)調査 is 利用できる at a 地元の level. In the 残り/休憩(する) of フラン it grew from 11.0 to 12.7 パーセント in the same period, the data show.

経済的な activity is so subdued that a visiting reporter 設立する most streets empty in the middle of the day.

Denain's woes date 支援する to the time when the once-繁栄する coal 地雷s started shutting in the late 1970s.

When the 2008 全世界の 財政上の 危機 started biting, the 状況/情勢 より悪くするd, Red Cross volunteers said, 裁判官ing by the 減らすing income of those who knock at their door and the growing numbers of youngsters の中で them.

Over the past six months, pensioners have started asking for help too, 悪化させるing the feeling that the town is 存在 left behind.

当局 are trying to 運ぶ/漁獲高 Denain out of its gloom, 含むing by building a 悪賢い new tram line to nearby Valenciennes, in a 企て,努力,提案 to end its 経済的な 孤立/分離. The 明言する/公表する has agreed 税金 breaks for 会社/堅いs that 始める,決める up here.

"The city is changing," said Houria Selama Belhadad, the 長,率いる of a 地元の organisation that teaches 移民,移住(する)s to read and 令状 in a newly refurbished neighbourhood.

市長 Anne-Lise Dufour-Tonini, a 社会主義者 who also 代表するs the town in 議会, makes much of her 計画(する)s to attract new 商売/仕事s to 取って代わる those that left 広大な, empty 倉庫/問屋s rusting 静かに away 権利 in the town centre.

But she 認めるs that this may not be enough to soothe 投票者s.

"People realise that we 政治家,政治屋s could 苦しむ to see someone like her (Le Pen) 勝利,勝つ ... It's a 抗議する 投票(する)," she said.

"WE TRIED EVERYTHING ELSE"

The FN's rise in Denain is 代表者/国会議員 of the party's growing 人気 in small towns, the countryside and amongst 労働者s, while peopl e in large cities and wealthier 投票者s have 証明するd more difficult to 変える.

全国的な, the older 世代 has tended to resist the FN's 予備交渉s, although in Denain pensioners joined students and 労働者s 手渡すing out the party's 選挙 ちらしs.

Several said that a few years ago, when the party was led by Le Pen's 無所属の政治家 father ジーンズ-Marie, they would not have 率直に shown their political colours. But there was no 調印する of 抗議する as the group walked through a street market.

Beyond Denain's Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie 地域, the FN hopes to 勝利,勝つ in another three or four of the country's re-designed 13 地域s. Opinion 投票s show Hollande's 社会主義者s, who now 治める/統治する most 地域s, 長,率いるing for an 選挙 大勝する, with Sarkozy's 共和国の/共和党のs hoping for another victory after winning a previous 一連の会議、交渉/完成する of 地元の 選挙s in March.

In a telling 調印する of the growing 控訴,上告 of the anti-移民/移住 FN, Zyrg, a carpet 販売人 of North African origin, said he too would 投票(する) for Le Pen にもかかわらず his 疑惑s.

"We've tried everything else. Nothing worked," he said. (付加 報告(する)/憶測ing by Pascal Rossignol; Editing by Andrew Callus and 示す Trevelyan)
