White House 希望に満ちた embraces a dirty word in US politics - "社会主義者"

By John Whitesides WASHINGTON, Nov 8 (Reuters) - "社会主義者" has long been a dirty word in American politics, a 中傷する thrown at 自由主義のs that evokes 冷淡な War-時代 images of bread lines, 政府-controlled economies and 権威主義者 政権s. But 2016 Democratic White House 希望に満ちた Bernie やすりを削る人/削る機械s has not shied away from 述べるing himself as a democratic 社会主義者. In fact, his 壇・綱領・公約 of eradicating income 不平等 and 抑制(する)ing 法人組織の/企業の 力/強力にする is attracting large (人が)群がるs of 自由主義の 行動主義者s. The question though is whether the 独立した・無所属 Vermont 上院議員 can 説得する a broader 列 of 民主党員s to 受託する his 見解/翻訳/版 of 社会主義, a 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 he 認めるs makes many people "very, very nervous." In the next few weeks, やすりを削る人/削る機械s, who is 追跡するing Democratic 前線-走者 Hillary Clinton in 投票s, will try to take the sting out of the label with a speech 目的(とする)d at explaining his democratic 社会主義者 見解(をとる)s. Selling the "社会主義者" tag remains a 法外な 障害物 for a 大統領の 候補者 in the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs, where 投票s 示す it is still a 消極的な for many 投票者s and would be a major hindrance in a 総選挙 (選挙などの)運動をする. "社会主義 is what makes him different. That one word makes him 控訴,上告ing to the party's 左翼," Democratic strategist Dane Strother said. "It won't be a problem in the Democratic 最初の/主要な," he said, although if やすりを削る人/削る機械s pulls off a political 奇蹟 and 勝利,勝つs the 指名/任命 "it would be a tougher sell in a 総選挙." やすりを削る人/削る機械s-style democratic 社会主義 is a far cry from the classic Soviet-style system featu (犯罪の)一味 政府 所有権 of 私的な 産業. He compares it to mostly 資本主義者 economies in western Europe such as Denmark and Norway, which feature more 規則 and a broader social safety 逮捕する than the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs. やすりを削る人/削る機械s 押し進めるs 計画(する)s such as 解放する/自由な college tuition, 選び出す/独身-payer healthcare, higher 最小限 給料, better 退職 利益s and 職業s programs to 再構築する the 国家の 組織/基盤/下部構造 - all 自由主義の 見解/翻訳/版s of a 人民党員 Democratic 協議事項. For やすりを削る人/削る機械s, democratic 社会主義 would create a more fair and equitable society and 攻撃する an 経済的な playing field that he says 好意s the 豊富な 支援する to 利益ing まず第一に/本来 the lower and middle classes. A GOVERNMENT FOR ALL "To me, democratic 社会主義 means 僕主主義. It means creating a 政府 that 代表するs all of us, not just the wealthiest people in the country," やすりを削る人/削る機械s said last month. やすりを削る人/削る機械s says Americans misunderstand the 社会主義者 label and do not 認める its 原則s in popular 連邦の programs such as Social 安全 or even 地元の 会・原則s such as public libraries and 解雇する/砲火/射撃 departments. But to old-school 社会主義者 行動主義者s like Greg Pason, 国家の 長官 of the 社会主義者 Party USA, やすりを削る人/削る機械s is no 改革運動家 for the 原因(となる). Pason said やすりを削る人/削る機械s sounds more like a 自由主義の 民主党員 and he 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うs most of his 支持者s in the Democratic race will 結局 支援する Clinton. He said it has been refreshing, however, to hear public 審議s about 社会主義. He has heard the word bandied about by his neighbors in New Jersey and strangers at a bus stop. やすりを削る人/削る機械s has 避けるd a 一斉射撃,(質問などの)連発/ダム of political attacks over the label まず第一に/本来 because 共和国の/共和党のs, who have 述べるd Democratic 大統領 Barack Obama for years as a "社会主義者," have not taken him 本気で as a 総選挙 脅し. Still, some have raised the 問題/発行する. 共和国の/共和党の 大統領の 候補者 Lindsey Graham joked in a 最近の 審議 that やすりを削る人/削る機械s had honeymooned in the Soviet Union "and I don't think he ever (機の)カム 支援する," and 共和国の/共和党の 前線-走者 Donald Trump called やすりを削る人/削る機械s "a soc ialist 削除する 共産主義者, because that's what he is." Opinion 投票s show 社会主義 is still a 概して 人気がない label in the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs, but they also show a generational change in 態度s as young people who did not live through the 冷淡な War are far いっそう少なく likely to be 脅すd of the tag. A Reuters/Ipsos 投票 published on Friday 設立する that 47 パーセント of Americans were somewhat or much いっそう少なく likely to support a 候補者 for 大統領,/社長 who was a 社会主義者, while 37 パーセント said it would not 事柄. A GENERATIONAL DIVIDE A Gallup 投票 this summer showed 69 パーセント of Americans between ages 18-29 would have no problem putting a 社会主義者 in the White House, compared to just 34 パーセント of those above the age of 65. "For people who (機の)カム of age 政治上 before 1989, the word 社会主義 is associated with the Soviet Union or Mao's 中国, and that doesn't sound like a very good thing," said Samuel Goldman, a political scientist at George Washington University. "For younger people, 社会主義 tends to be associated with Sweden and Norway and Denmark, and those are much more 控訴,上告ing societies than the Soviet Union," he said. Roland Racevskis, a やすりを削る人/削る機械s 支持者 in Iowa City, Iowa, said やすりを削る人/削る機械s' embrace of the 社会主義者 tag had helped endear him to 自由主義の 支援者s who see him as a different 肉親,親類d of U.S. 政治家,政治屋. "It's an 指示,表示する物 of his authenticity that he doesn't 縮む from the 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語," said Racevskis, a French professor at the University of Iowa. "I think he can change people's 見解(をとる)s of 社会主義, but I'm not so starry-注目する,もくろむd to think it will be 平易な or he won't be attacked for it," he said. (Editing by Paul Thomasch and Ross Colvin)
