Vaping may 援助(する) smoking 停止 but also 上げる relapse 危険

By Lisa Rapaport

(Reuters Health) - Adults who smoke cigarettes may have an easier time cutting 支援する or quitting altogether if they start vaping, but a new French 熟考する/考慮する also 示唆するs that vaping may make ex-smokers more likely to relapse.

"の中で adults, electronic cigarette use by never smokers is 極端に rare - most 使用者s are smokers who want to やめる or 減ずる their タバコ 消費 or former smokers who want to 妨げる a relapse," said Ramchandar Gomajee, lead author of the 熟考する/考慮する and a 研究員 at Sorbonne University in Paris.

Gomajee and 同僚s followed 5,400 smokers for an 普通の/平均(する) of 23 months, 含むing 822 people who also 報告(する)/憶測d daily use of e-cigarettes. Vapers smoked more 伝統的な cigarettes a day - 11.2 compared with 9.8 on 普通の/平均(する).

By the end of follow-up, however, vapers 削減(する) 支援する more on daily cigarettes - 除去するing 4.4 a day compared with 2.7 for 非,不,無-vapers. And vapers were also 67% more likely to やめる smoking.

分かれて, 研究員s also followed 2,025 former smokers for an 普通の/平均(する) of 22 months, 含むing 176 who 報告(する)/憶測d 正規の/正選手 e-cigarette use. Vapers were 70% more likely to 再開する smoking 伝統的な cigarettes during the 熟考する/考慮する than ex-smokers who had やめる without vaping.

"Former smokers who are using electronic cigarettes are still (麻薬)常用者d to nicotine," Gomajee said by email. "In any 状況/情勢 where they を煩う (麻薬中毒の)禁断症状s but are not able to use their electronic cigarette, for example because they have no e-liquid, or because of technical problems with the electronic cigarette, they are likely to smoke again."

The 熟考する/考慮する wasn't a controlled 実験 designed to 証明する whether or how vaping might 衝撃 smoking habits for 使用者s of 伝統的な cigarettes. And, the 熟考する/考慮する also wasn't designed to 実験(する) the safety or 有効性 of e-cigarettes as a smoking 停止 援助(する).

Another 制限 is that 研究員s 欠如(する)d data on the 推論する/理由s people used e-cigarett es, making it impossible to 決定する whether smoking 停止 or 削減 of daily cigarette use was a goal of people who vaped, 研究員s 公式文書,認める in JAMA 内部の 薬/医学.

Big U.S. タバコ companies are all developing e-cigarettes. The 殴打/砲列-力/強力にするd gadgets feature a glowing tip and a heating element that turns liquid nicotine and flavorings into a cloud of vapor that 使用者s 吸い込む.

When e-cigarettes 含む/封じ込める nicotine, they can be 中毒の like 伝統的な cigarettes. Even without nicotine, earlier 研究 示唆するs that flavorings and other 成分s in e-liquids used for vaping could be linked to serious breathing problems.

A big question about e-cigarettes, すなわち, whether they're 安全な or at least safer than 伝統的な cigarettes, isn't answered by the 現在の 熟考する/考慮する.

"E-cigarettes do not have the same level of known carcinogens as cigarettes, so they are safer in this 尊敬(する)・点," said Thomas Wills, a 研究員 at the University of Hawaii 癌 中心 in Honolulu who wasn't 伴う/関わるd in the 熟考する/考慮する.

"However, in the last three years a lot has come out on other 味方する 影響s," Wills said by email. "There are now 15 熟考する/考慮するs showing a 結合,連鎖 of e-cigarette use to respiratory 病気 (喘息 and COPD) in both adolescence and adulthood ... so it's difficult to argue 本気で that e-cigarettes are 安全な from a health 見地."

Smokers who want to やめる should try other 停止 援助(する)s like nicotine 交替/補充 patches or Chantix, a prescription smoking 停止 麻薬, before 試みる/企てるing to やめる 補佐官d by e-cigarettes, Wills advised.

While some people do 達成する long-称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 停止 with the help of e-cigarettes, this is a small fraction of smokers, said Stanton Glantz, director of the 中心 for タバコ 支配(する)/統制する 研究 and Education at the University of California San Francisco.

"E-cigarettes should not be recommended for smoking 停止," Glantz, who wasn't 伴う/関わるd in the 熟考する/考慮する, said by email. "二重の use is more dangerous than smoking alone, which is an important and under-高く評価する/(相場などが)上がるd 影響."
