Young Taiwanese reconnect with indigenous roots to 傷をいやす/和解させる 外傷/ショック

HUALIEN, Taiwan, Aug 8 (Thomson Reuters 創立/基礎) - The Truku 年上のs of Taiwan still dream about their mountain home four 10年間s after 脅迫者s tore it 負かす/撃墜する - a classic symptom of 外傷/ショック as community members struggle to 受託する their loss.

At one evening 集会, Miya Yudaw 述べるd his recurring dream, where the mountain was still whole, dotted with 静かな farms of millet and 甘い potatoes, and the 空気/公表する clean, only to wake each time to the 悲惨 of reality.

"The mountain is our home and the land is our 血," said Miya, 65, who leads a group that has been fighting for more than 20 years for a 採掘 会社/堅い to return their ancestral land in Hualien on Taiwan's rugged east coast.

"When it is 存在 taken away, it's like a part of us 存在 taken away too," the 農業者 told the other Truku 年上のs as they drank Kaoliang, a strong sorghum-based Taiwanese アルコール飲料, at his dimly lit home.

The historical 外傷/ショック of Taiwan's 16 indigenous groups - who were 立ち退かせるd from their land and banned from speaking their own languages, using their native 指名するs or practising traditions like 追跡(する)ing - has only recently been 定評のある.

大統領 Tsai Ing-wen apologised in 2016 for "centuries of 苦痛 and 虐待", dating 支援する to colonisation by Japan in the 19th century and former leader Chiang Kai-shek's assimilation 政策 in the 1960s.

Such 外傷/ショック has led to 不景気, 苦悩, alcohol dependence and high 率s of 肝臓 病気 and 致命的な 事故s の中で the 24,000-strong Truku community, said 国家の Taiwan University 研究員 Ciwang Teyra.

But the younger 世代 are breaking the cycle by reconnecting with the culture that their parents were uprooted from, through language, music and nature, as they 押し進める for the 政府 to recognise and 保護する their 権利s.

Indigenous people (不足などを)補う 2% of Taiwan's 23 million people, the 大多数 of whom trace their 家系 支援する to 中国, which regards the 自治d island as a wayward 州.

Buya Ici's memories are 平等に painful. His childhood was filled with the deafening sound of 隣人s' roofs and kitchens 爆発するing as the 採掘 company blew them up, 軍隊ing his family to abandon their farm and trek 負かす/撃墜する the mountain.

"They used some 巨大(な) machines to 涙/ほころび 負かす/撃墜する the house. There was 簡単に nothing left," said the 50-year-old train 専門家技術者, who is also a Truku.

"This 肉親,親類d of psychological 外傷/ショック is with me until now."

ALCOHOL

Globally, many indigenous peoples を煩う higher 自殺 率s than the general 全住民 予定 to colonisation, dispossession, 差別 and culture loss.

A 2018 分析 of 30 countries and 領土s by Canada's 記念の University 設立する the highest 不平等s in Canada and Brazil, where 自殺 率s were 20 times the 国家の 普通の/平均(する)s.

In Taiwan, 自殺 率s の中で some indigenous groups were six times higher than the 残り/休憩(する) of the 全住民, it 設立する.

< p>"We have 緩和するd some of the 政策s ... this is a long 対話," said Iwan, an indigenous academic-turned-政治家,政治屋 from Taiwan's Sediq tribe, which has 10,000 people.

HEALING

Wearing a 栄冠を与える of flowers and a long, flowing dress, Panai Kusui sang at London's first Taiwan Film Festival of her indigenous community's loss of land, language and 身元.

"When the mountains 崩壊(する), the beaches are sold, the 勝利,勝つd from 古代の times is 汚染するd, human hearts are also 汚染するd," she sang, on a break from a sit-in over land 権利s that she began in 2017 in Taiwan's 資本/首都, Taipei.

Panai's songs, partly sung in her native Puyuma language, have become a symbol of 抗議する and a source of inspiration for the younger 世代 to re-engage with their culture and (問題を)取り上げる the land struggle.

"When I was in 最初の/主要な school, I didn't have a strong sense of my 民族の 身元," said the teacher, who identified 会合 other indigenous students at college as a turning point for him.

He joined the Truku Student and 青年 協会, which he now leads, and has become 熱烈な about the Taroko 国家の Park, 指名するd after the Truku people who used to live there, organising 引き上げ(る)ing trips to former 部族の villages in the area.

"We do this to (不足などを)補う for what we, the young people, 行方不明になるd out on in the past," he said. "It's like a 傷をいやす/和解させるing 過程 ... I feel like a real Truku now."
