COVID 感染s imperil Indonesia's vaccinated health 労働者s, and hospitals

JAKARTA, July 7 (Reuters) - Indonesian pulmonologist Erlina Burhan is exasperated after another long 転換 in a jam-packed hospital 行方不明の 200 staff 感染させるd by the coronavirus にもかかわらず 存在 vaccinated just months ago.

"It's crazy, really crazy," she tells Reuters. "More 患者s but いっそう少なく staff. This is ridiculous."

About 95% health 労働者s have been fully vaccinated, 圧倒的に with 中国's Sinovac, said the Indonesian Hospitals 協会 (IHA).

But, によれば 独立した・無所属 data group Lapor COVID-19, 131 healthcare 労働者s, mostly vaccinated with the Sinovac 発射, have died since June, 含むing 50 in July.

An Indonesian health 省 spokesperson did not すぐに 答える/応じる to a request for comment.

まっただ中に the 殺到する in 感染s, some 医療の professionals are now 尋問 the efficacy of the ワクチン though the Indonesian 政府 says the problem lies with the Delta coronavirus variant not the ワクチン.

Most 感染させるd health 労働者s 展示(する) only 穏やかな symptoms but a 調査する by Reuters of doctors, hospital directors and health 産業 長,指導者s 示すs that thousands have been 軍隊d to 孤立する across Java island, home to about 150 million people and the epicentre of Indonesia's より悪くするing 突発/発生.

Lia Partakusuma, 長官 general of the IHA, said she had 調査するd big 明言する/公表する-run hospitals across Java's major cities.

"They say 10% of their staff are 肯定的な for COVID," she said.

Those staff should 孤立する for two weeks, she 追加するd, although other 医療の professionals said many were sequestered for as little as five days because they were so 不正に needed at work.

The 殺到する in deaths and 感染s of health 労働者s could not happen at a worse time, say doctors and hospital (n)役員/(a)執行力のあるs.

A fourfold 増加する in 公式の/役人 人物/姿/数字s for coronavirus 事例/患者s in the past month to more than 31,000 per day means the numbers needing hospitalisation have gone up by "three to five times", によれば the IHA.

Epidemiologists say that low 実験(する)ing 率s mean 公式の/役人 COVID-19 data does not truly 反映する the extent of the 突発/発生.

MANPOWER IS THE PROBLEM

患者s 麻薬中毒の up to intravenous drips in car parks, others lying comatose in 一時しのぎの物,策 beds in 回廊(地帯)s, the frantic search for oxygen まっただ中に 不足s - all now commonplace in hospitals across Java, doctors and hospital directors say.

Many hospitals are either nearly 十分な or over-capacity, hospital directors and the IHA say.

Public health 専門家s 恐れる the 状況/情勢 will 悪化する and 警告する that Indonesia could be "the next India", where COVID 事例/患者s 急上昇するd and the health system was 押し寄せる/沼地d in April and May.

But Indonesia is いっそう少なく 用意が出来ている than India to 扱う such a 危機. The Organisation for 経済的な Co-操作/手術 and 開発 says Indonesia has 0.4 doctors per 1,000 people, the fifth lowest in the Asia-太平洋の, and いっそう少なく than half that of India.

Struggling with the staff 不足s, hospitals are 新採用するing "volunteers" - pharmacists, radiographers and 医療の students paid modest 量s.

An (n)役員/(a)執行力のある of a hospital chain, who spoke on 条件 of anonymity, said caring for COVID-19 患者s often 要求するd 技術s that could not be 供給するd by students or other volunteers.

"It's not really a 解答," the (n)役員/(a)執行力のある said.

The 政府 has 課すd 堅い social 制限s on the islands of Java and Bali, while the health 大臣 has 約束d nearly 8,000 more hospital beds.

But doctors ask what good more beds will do without the staff.

"The problem is 動員可能数. Even if we can 追加する space, who can take care of them?" said neurologist Eka Julianta Wahjoepramono.

"Nobody. That's the problem."

'NO SIGNIFICANT ANTIBODIES'

Indonesia has relied ひどく on 中国's Sinovac ワクチン because it was the only 製薬の company to quickly sell it large numbers of doses.

It vaccinated most health 労働者s in February and March, making them an important 全世界の 実験(する) 事例/患者 for the efficacy of the ワクチン.

At first the Sinovac inoculation programme 意味ありげに 減ずるd deaths from COVID-19. In January, 158 doctors died from the respiratory 病気 but by May the number dropped to 13.

Since June, at least 30 doctors have 死なせる/死ぬd, によれば the Indonesian 医療の 協会.

Eka, who was fully vaccinated with Sinovac, ended up in hospital with a 厳しい 事例/患者 of COVID-19 last month.

"Many of my 同僚s did not have 重要な antibodies 増加する after Sinovac," he said, meaning they did not have high levels of 保護 against 感染s.

Sinovac did not 答える/応じる to requests for comment but last month, Sinovac 広報担当者 Liu Peicheng told Reuters 予選 results showed the ワクチン produced a three-倍の 削減 in 中立にする/無効にするing 影響 against the Delta variant.

He said a booster 発射 could quickly elicit stronger and more 持続する antibody reaction. He did not 供給する 詳細(に述べる)d data.

Health 大臣 Budi Gunadi Sadikin has defended the Sinovac ワクチン. "The 問題/発行する that we are 直面するing is not about the different efficacy between ワクチンs, it is まず第一に/本来 because of the Delta variant."

The 医療の 協会 has 勧めるd the 政府 to give health 労働者s a third dose of the ワクチン, and quickly.

Some doctors are 飛行機で行くing to the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs to get inoculated with other ワクチンs. For most though, such a trip is too expensive, said Dr Berlian Idriansyah Idris.

"We cannot 孤立する ourselves and work from home, for God's sake. Not now," he said.

"A third 発射 will give us the 保護 we need." (報告(する)/憶測ing by Tom Allard in Jakarta and Kate Lamb in Sydney. 付加 報告(する)/憶測ing by Agustinus Beo Da Costa and Stanley Widianto in Jakarta. Editing by Robert Birsel)
