Emboldened by 抗議するs, Cuban 対立 websites pique 政府

July 19 (Reuters) - Years before becoming 大統領,/社長 of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel 押し進めるd for greater public 接近 to the internet at a time when it was only 利用できる to a tiny 少数,小数派. He would 結局 後継する in getting much of his country online.

Now, just across the Florida 海峡s, his 対抗者s in Miami's Cuban 追放する community are taking 十分な advantage of Cuba'a 拡大するd internet 接近.

The Cuban 政府 has (刑事)被告 独立した・無所属 マスコミ 出口s 大部分は based in the Miami area of 刺激するing the 前例のない, spontaneous 抗議するs that spread across Cuba a week ago.

One of the 場所/位置s it 選び出す/独身d out, ADN Cuba, slants its ニュース報道 against the 政府 in Havana at every turn. It recently published a photograph of Diaz-Canel that was altered to look like a police mugshot. "集団殺戮," it said underneath.

Its ニュース報道 of the 抗議するs has concentrated ひどく on the people 傷つける or 拘留するd. For days the 場所/位置 led with a story that the 甥 of a 上級の 共産主義者 Party leader called on his family and the 政府 to "lay 負かす/撃墜する your 武器s" and "listen to the people." Another headline 報告(する)/憶測d 抗議する人s in eastern Cuba shouted "殺害者" at 副 総理大臣 Ramiro Valdes.

目的(とする)ing for a young audience, Miami Beach-based Diario de Cuba closely follows Cuban and Cuban-American musicians 批判的な of the 政府.

One 最近の 前線 page featured separate headlines on the 最新の news and 見解(をとる)s from musicians Pitbull, Lenier Mesa and Maykel Osorbo, while also 報告(する)/憶測ing that Silvio Rodriguez, a longtime 同盟(する) of Cuba's 政府, was trying to "救助(する)" artists who have abandoned the 政府.

Around a dozen such Cuba-焦点(を合わせる)d news and magazines have their websites 封鎖するd in Cuba, but Cubans can 接近 them anyway using 事実上の 私的な 網状組織 (VPN) services, and 株 them on social マスコミ 場所/位置s 一般に 利用できる in Cuba.

Some relentlessly berate the 政府 while others, tho ugh still 批判的な, 努力する/競う for more fact-based journalism like the 開拓するing 出口 14yMedio.

The 独立した・無所属 場所/位置 El Toque, which also has a number of Cuba-based staff, published an article debunking 誤った anti-政府 報告(する)/憶測s and out-of-状況 photos 広まる on the internet that grossly inflated the size of the demonstrations.

While it is difficult to 手段 the 衝撃 of the U.S.-based 場所/位置s on 最近の 抗議するs in Cuba, the 政府 there certainly sees them as a menace.

外務大臣 Bruno Rodriguez 献身的な much of a news 会議/協議会 last week to 非難するing ADN Cuba and two 新聞記者/雑誌記者s by 指名する while also 非難するing a social マスコミ hashtag (選挙などの)運動をする 上げるd by bots.

He (刑事)被告 対立 マスコミ of working for the U.S. 政府, which 基金s a number of Cuban 対立 マスコミ websites with hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, によれば U.S. 記録,記録的な/記録するs published by the Cuba Money 事業/計画(する).

抗議する人s in Cuba have also spread messages of discontent and word of 抗議するs on social マスコミ 壇・綱領・公約s, mostly Facebook, and encrypted messaging services such as WhatsApp, Signal and 電報電信.

Many of those 場所/位置s were 封鎖するd に引き続いて the 抗議するs, 誘発するing U.S. 大統領 Joe Biden to say he would review whether Washington could help Cubans 回復する internet 接近.

Even without U.S. help, Cubans find ways to see censored content with circumvention 道具s such as Psiphon. The company says up to 1.4 million Cubans were using its 使用/適用 to see banned content on some days last week, up from 18,000 per day before the 抗議するs.

That would mean 20% of Cuba's 概算の 7 million internet 使用者s used that one 道具 to get around censors.

'IMPOSSIBLE DELUSION'

In 2013, when he was 相続人 明らかな to former 大統領 Raul Castro, Diaz-Canel said that continuing to 禁止(する) the internet in Cuba was an "almost impossible delusion that doesn't make sense."

Internet 接近 徐々に 拡大するd after that and the landscape changed 劇的な in Dec ember 2018 when Cubans were able to get internet service on their 動きやすい phones for the first time.

Readership of 対立 マスコミ inside Cuba 爆発するd, said Baruch College professor Ted Henken, editor of the recently published 調書をとる/予約する "Cuba's 数字表示式の 革命." Henken 会談 to the マスコミ 出口s, which 跡をつける their traffic through Google Analytics and other methods.

"Since December 2018 these 出口s have 伸び(る)d a 抱擁する island audience and left the 公式の/役人 マスコミ even more exposed as propagandists," Henken said. "They (the Cuban leadership) miscalculated in that they didn't realize that this would very quickly, in two and a half years, 爆発する in their 直面する."

Rodriguez last week (刑事)被告 ADN Cuba and others of carrying out a 計画(する) for which "U.S. 帝国主義 has worked for a long time."

The U.S. 政府 does 供給する 財政上の 援助 to マスコミ 出口s 批判的な of the Cuban 政府.

A company closely associated with ADN Cuba received $410,710 from the U.S. 機関 for International 開発 to 促進する human 権利s in Cuba last year, 新聞記者/雑誌記者 Tracey Eaton 報告(する)/憶測d 経由で the Cuba Money 事業/計画(する), which 跡をつけるs the spending through public 記録,記録的な/記録するs and Freedom of (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) 行為/法令/行動する requests.

代表者/国会議員s for USAID did not 答える/応じる to a request for comment over the 週末. ADN Cuba's 創立者 also did not 答える/応じる to requests for comment. The two 新聞記者/雑誌記者s 指名するd by Rodriguez 拒絶する/低下するd interviews.

Another anti-政府 website, CubaNet, received $300,000 from USAID in 2020, its director 定評のある.

Once a biweekly newsletter printed in Miami, CubaNet now has a team in Cuba in 反抗 of the 当局, and has published stories on the 明らかな wealth of the Castro family.

Director Hugo Landa said "we have never hidden" the U.S. 基金ing and that U.S. 公式の/役人s have never tried to 影響(力) ニュース報道.

"If we ever felt any 圧力 from any of our funders to 影響(力) our content, I would 放棄する that support," Landa said.

With or without U .S. 基金ing, the 場所/位置s are trying to reach readers like Jorge Norris, a 35-year-old IT engineer in Cuba, who uses a VPN to read 場所/位置s such as Diario de Cuba and 14yMedio along with 公式の/役人 Cuban マスコミ.

"It's another 見解(をとる) to be able to form an idea of what's happening in the world," Norris said. "You have to be 完全に 知らせるd of what they say here in Cuba and in the world."
