Forget the age-old smoker's cough, now doctors are seeing ´µ¼Ôs with 'vaper's cough' (and it can sound very different!)

Vapers are ¸ºß struck É餫¤¹¡¿·âÄƤ¹¤ë with a pesky cough ? and doctors say it sounds different to that of a smoker.

A smoker's cough, °ìÊý¡¿¹ç´Ö, tends to be 'phlegmy', rather than ´¥Á礷¤¿¡¤Æü¾È¤ê¤Î.

¥¿¥Ð¥³ destroys tiny hair-like structures in th e ¹Ò¶õÏ©s called cilia, designed to keep dirt and mucus out of the ÇÙs.

When these are killed off, irritants can settle in the ÇÙs and mucus builds up. This is what Ͷȯ¤¹¤ë¡¿°ú¤µ¯¤³¤¹s the 'smoker's cough', with their ÃÄÂΡ¿»àÂÎ »î¤ß¤ë¡¿´ë¤Æ¤ëing to ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ the ¹Ò¶õÏ©s.

Once someone gives up smoking, cilia regrow and help to move the mucus out. This can also result in a cough that can last for months.

Professor Lion Shahab, co-director of University College London's ¥¿¥Ð¥³ and Alcohol ¸¦µæ Group, told MailOnline: 'Developing a cough is a normal ÊÖÅú to stopping smoking as the cilia in the ÇÙs ²óÉü¤¹¤ë and become µ¡Ç½¤Î again.

'So, if a smoker switches to vaping, something Îà»÷¤Î may be going on.'

ÌܤÀ¤Ä e-cigarette ¸¦µæ°÷ Professor Peter Hajek, of Queen Mary University London, said the tickly 'vaper's cough' usually fades after a few weeks of use.

Dr Hana Patel, a GP in London, said there is 'no ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ ¾Úµò' that the coughs are ľÀÜ¡¿¤Þ¤Ã¤¹¤°¤Ë ¸¶°ø¡Ê¤È¤Ê¤ë¡Ëd by vaping because the gadgets ? sold for as little as ¡ò5 ? ¹Á¡¿ÈòÆñ½ê't been around long enough to ³Îǧ¤¹¤ë the link.?

She told MailOnline: 'They can ¸¶°ø¡Ê¤È¤Ê¤ë¡Ë Ì£Êý¤¹¤ë ±Æ¶Ás such as throat and mouth irritation, ƬÄËs, cough and feeling sick.

'These tend to ¸º¤º¤ë over time with continued use.

'We don't know yet what ±Æ¶Ás they might have in the long-¾Î¤¹¤ë¡¤¸Æ¤Ö¡¿´ü´Ö¡¿ÍѸì.'

Dr Patel ¶¯Ä´¤¹¤ë¡¿¥¹¥È¥ì¥¹d that vapes should only be used to help you stop smoking, or to stop you going »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë to ¥¿¥Ð¥³.

Dr Nirusa Kumaran, another NHS GP based in London, Äɲ乤ëd: 'Vaping can be a useful adjunct if you are stopping smoking.

'But it's not something I recommend taking up without a history of smoking. Without knowing the ·éÇò of the vape you could be introducing harmful toxins into your ¹Ò¶õÏ©s.'
