Autumn’s fiery wonders: Summer may be over, but the show goes on with these seasonal beauties

People tend to feel sad in autumn, but there's really no need. This is a season of 激しい beauty, new beginnings and fresh hope. Hedgerows are laden with blackberries, バタフライs feast on orchard windfalls and leaves are turning to gold. It is often called 'the forgotten season'.

We may feel it's time to abandon the outdoors, but that's nonsense. A 井戸／弁護士席-planned garden is as pretty now as it is in May. Colours are warm, the light soft: an October garden can be sheer poetry.

So, if yours is starting to look a little tired, here are some hints on how to give it an autumn 解除する.

Is there enough floral colour? Are there shrubs or trees in autumn shades? What about autumn-flowering bulbs? If you think you have gaps, visit some 広大な／多数の／重要な public gardens and 公式文書，認める what looks lovely.

If there's space, consider 工場／植物ing a tree for the red and go ld hues of this time of year. Liquidambar, Japanese maples and witch hazels have gorgeous foliage now. Rowans ― Sorbus 種類 ― grow みごたえのある berries in red, orange and pink.

Some of the best perennials flower in autumn, too. Asian anemones, dahlias, Schizostylis, perennial asters and so many more will be gorgeous for weeks to come.

REDUCE THE SCRUFF

JOY OF COLOUR

Schizostylis coccinea Major is a superb autumn 工場／植物 with red flowers の中で swordshaped leaves. With sun and moist, but 解放する／自由な-draining, 国／地域, it flowers beyond November and will be with you for years.

There are superb late red-hot pokers, too. Kniphofia rooperi produces rather rude-looking orange pokers from October. But for a 乾燥した，日照りの 位置／汚点／見つけ出す, K.caulescens behaves almost like a succulent. It has rosettes of glaucous leaves and handsome orange-red and yellow flower spikes.

It's always good to have mildew-抵抗力のある asters, such as dark-leaved A. laevis Calliope and the November-flowering A.lateriflorus Horizontalis. And every garden should 含む／封じ込める the word's finest perennial, A.x frikartii M?nch, which flowers gloriously until November.

You might think: 'Why bother with all that if winter's on the way?' But is it not more pleasant to prune 工場／植物s and sweep leaves in beautiful surroundings? 残り／休憩（する）? You can take that after December 21, when autumn comes to an 公式の／役人 の近くに.
