A pensioner who launched a furious tirade at a neighbor for using a garden hosepipe to wash his car outside their block of flats has been handed a restraining order. Michael Mills (pictured), 80, ranted at 32-year-old Stuart Lake that the hose at their complex in Christchurch, Dorset, was only for watering the communal garden. He then warned him that he was a former Royal Marine and would have 'done him in' if he was younger, a court heard. A 'needlessly confrontational' Mills was verbally abusive towards his neighbor on several other occasions, often in front of Mr Lake's two-year-old daughter.

Magistrates heard he called Mr Lake a '[expletive]' after he left a communal door open. He repeated the insult on another occasion when Mr Lake removed a bird protector screen from the door to make it easier for his toddler daughter to get in. Mills was also seen to stick two fingers up to his neighbor when he drove past him in his car. Mr Lake made a complaint of harassment to Dorset Police. Officers offered to deal with the matter by way of a warning but Mills refused and so he was charged. He had denied the offense of harassment but changed his plea to guilty on the day he was due to stand trial at Poole magistrates' court in Dorset. As he was handed a restraining order by the court to keep away from his neighbor, Mills was told there was 'no excuse for the way he behaved.'?Mr Lake was the only resident who was not 'elderly' when he moved into the block of flats in the genteel retirement town of Christchurch last year. The court heard, the harassment took place between July and August. Paul Legg, prosecuting, said: 'This was a 
dispute between neighbors. Mills had been living there for some time. Mr Lake only moved in last year. He has a two-year-old daughter. The occupants of the other flats are older residents. Mr Lake is in his 30s, there were perhaps some problems with a younger person moving in. Mills was being aggressive and needlessly confrontational. [In July 2022] Mills was banged on Mr Lake's door when his daughter was there, he complained that the communal door was open and called Mr Lake a [expletive].'

Mr Legg continued: 'In August, Mills approached Mr Lake who was using a hosepipe connected to a tap to clean his car. Mills said to him: "You [expletive] ain't or else I'll make sure you stop. If I was still in the marines I would've done you in." [Later in August] Mr Lake took down a bird screen from a door so his daughter could come and go more easily. Mr Lake later found Mills standing in a doorway, Mills called him a [expletive] and later stuck two fingers up at him when he drove past. Mr Lake asked Mills to watch his language because he had his two-year-old daughter with him.' Mills later attended the police station after Mr Lake had complained about him, and was warned not to confront his neighbor again, the court heard.

Debra Scudamore, defending, said: 'Mr Mills is an elderly gentleman, he is a pensioner... the rest of the residents are elderly too. He has been the managing director of the block of flats for the last 20 years, everything has been fine until Mr Lake moved in last year. Mr Mills is the one who goes to sort out issues. He didn't understand the police order. Mr Mills was trying to remonstrate with 
Mr Lake, his banging on the door was because of the noise that was coming from Mr Lake's flat. The hose should only be used for watering the garden, not cleaning cars. When Mr Lake was packing to go on holiday, the bird screen was taken down and it was not put back. This is a neighbor dispute that has got out of hand.' Mills, who pleaded guilty to a single charge of harassment, was given a conditional discharge but was handed a 12-month restraining order and must not contact Mr Lake. Chair of the bench David Murray said: 'We understand it must be difficult. 'You are somebody who has lived in this block of flats for a long time. Somebody of a much younger generation has come in. But there's no excuse for the way you have behaved.
