Remembering B G Verghese: Indira Gandhi's '罰金, upright man' and my faithful friend?

From 1966 to 1968, George Verghese and I were 同僚s in the Indira Gandhi （国際的組織の）事務局 (not yet PMO). It was a small outfit - just six 公式の／役人s. We met each other almost every day.?

George was （警察などへの）密告，告訴（状） officer, Sharda Prasad his number two. They made a superb team.?

After the 1967 選挙s, George wrote a paper, 委任統治（領） for change. In his autobiography, First 草案: The Making of Modern India, he wrote: “The 1967 選挙 was a watershed. The 議会 選び出す／独身 party dominance was challenged, 特に in the 明言する／公表するs, differences could no longer be 解決するd within the family by 言及／関連 to the 議会 Working 委員会 or AICC. A new political vocabulary and norms of 行為／行う （機の）カム into vogue. 条件 like gherao, bandh, hartal, 無 hour, defection, aya 押し通す gaya 押し通す, 床に打ち倒す 実験（する）, Rashtrapati Bhawan or Raj Bhawan parades, shouting 旅団, booth 逮捕（する）ing, young turks became part of the new lexicon.”

Unfortunately, there was n o follow-up. By the end of 1968, George had had enough. He did not やめる fit into the murky bureaucratic world. He sent a 公式文書，認める to the 首相. On it she wrote, Shri Verghese is a 罰金, upright young man, sincere and hard working. It would not be 権利 for us to stand in his way.”?

On 1.1.1969, he joined The Hindustan Times as Editor. The loss of the P.M. （国際的組織の）事務局 was the 伸び（る） of the newspaper. He was an 優れた editor, and の中で the most 尊敬（する）・点d 新聞記者／雑誌記者s in 地位，任命する-1947 India.?

A few days after his autobiography appeared in 2010, I asked George: “How long did it take you to 令状 the 調書をとる／予約する?” His answer was, “About 83 years.”?

His 最新の 調書をとる／予約する, 地位，任命する Haste: Quintessential India is unique. In it, he sums up the story of Modern India 経由で stamps.?

He wrote: “Postage stamps are like 外交官／大使s, carrying greetings and messages to people everywhere. They 構成する dots in a puzzle. Connect them and you find a story, may be many stories, which tell you of 地理学, history and the entire cavalcade of life as it would have 広げるd - of 勝利 and 悲劇, of sports and adventure, struggle and 改革（する）.”?

As far as I am aware, no such 調書をとる／予約する has ever been published anywhere else in the world.?

George was a faithful friend of 広大な／多数の／重要な 儀礼, decency, 正直さ and sensitivity. He abhorred humbug sugared charlatans and 献身的な 詐欺s. His 精製するd 緊縮 was not touched by “show off” asceticism.?

George was not a soft individual. He could be hard as a diamond when the need arose. He stood his ground while othe rs were fawning during the 緊急.?He was a person in whose presence one felt comfortable and at 緩和する.?

Nothing can 軟化する the blow that has fallen on his family except to say that their grief is 株d by a very large number of his admirers and friends, in India and beyond.
