My 保険会社 won't 支払う/賃金 my £30k 押し込み強盗 (人命などを)奪う,主張する because rising gold prices meant I had underestimated the value of my jewellery!

My home was burgled in October and I lost almost £30,000 価値(がある) of 所持品. Luckily I’d had building and contents 保険 for the last three years with esure.

It sent 一連の会議、交渉/完成する a loss adjustor and I assumed everything would follow a 過程 and the 損失d items would be 直す/買収する,八百長をするd and the stolen ones 取って代わるd.

But after four months it sent a letter to say it wouldn’t be 支払う/賃金ing out anything at all 予定 to underinsurance.

Would you know the value of your jewellery? Prices may have risen since you last had items valued, as one reader found out the hard way

Would you know the value of your jewellery? Prices may have risen since you last had items valued, as one reader 設立する out the hard way

I had 基準 cover for contents, which was £26,600 for 世帯 goods and £13,300 for high 危険 goods, such as jewellery and DVDs.

The (人命などを)奪う,主張する I made for 世帯 goods was £17,714 and for high 危険 goods was £10,634 ? 井戸/弁護士席 within the 限界s.

But esure has a 条項 in the 政策, which said any items above £1,500 should be 明示するd ‘or they may 拒絶する or 減ずる any (人命などを)奪う,主張する made’.

It seems nine of the items stolen, some of which were my wife’s gold jewellery, were over the £1,500 示す.

I did not realise they were 価値(がある) so much. It seems that 予定 to rises in the price of gold the value of these items had 増加するd since she received them.

Most were gifts from parents on our wedding and were certainly within the £1,500 at the time of 購入(する).

Now not only has esure 拒絶するd the (人命などを)奪う,主張する but it has cancelled the cover and refunded the 賞与金.?

This means that I will receive no 支払い(額) at all ? even for the items that were not problematic ? and I am now finding it very difficult to find 代案/選択肢 保険 because I have to 公表する/暴露する that I have had 保険 拒絶する/低下するd.

I 設立する esure 経由で a price comparison 場所/位置 and it was the cheapest provider on all three occasions. I did some 研究 before I 調印するd with it.

Why won’t it 支払う/賃金 out even for the items that weren’t underinsured? Does it make no difference that I didn’t realise the value of the items 違反d £1,500?

VJ. By email.

Rachel Rickard Straus of This is Money says: What a stressful 状況/情勢. It must be terrible to have your home burgled and lose valued 所有/入手s, but at least for those with 保険 there is some 慰安 that while some items of sentimental value can never be 取って代わるd, at least others can.

Uncovered: The burglary resulted in a loss of belongings worth almost £30,000

暴露するd: The 押し込み強盗 resulted in a loss of 所持品 価値(がある) almost £30,000

But some time after your 所持品 were stolen, you were told that the 政策 was 無効の and you would not receive a penny.

The problem seems to surround a few items of gold jewellery that belonged to your wife. You say these were given to her several years ago as wedding 現在のs. At the time, you say, no more than £1,500 was paid for any one item.

You therefore insured によれば this 見解(をとる) and made (人命などを)奪う,主張するs for the value you thought they had.

However esure got an 独立した・無所属 jewellery 専門家 to give a valuation. He looked at wedding photos in which your wife was wearing the items and みなすd them to be above the £1,500 示す.

esure says that had it known the true value of these items it would not have 申し込む/申し出d you an 保険 政策 in the first place.

The undervaluation means that you have broken one of the 条件 and 条件s of the 政策 and as such it is 扱う/治療するd as 効果的に never having 存在するd.

This means there will be no 支払う/賃金 out at all.

esure has explained that one of the questions you were asked during your online 使用/適用 was ‘do you have any 明示するd items. 明示するd items are any 選び出す/独身 item valued at £1,500 or more and any pedal cycle valued over £500. Where an item has not been 明示するd no cover will operate’.

Before the 政策 could be 購入(する)d, you were also told ‘If your high 危険 items are greater than one third of the total content sum insured could result in a (人命などを)奪う,主張する 存在 減ずるd, 拒絶するd or your 政策 cancelled’.

It seems you therefore had plenty of 適切な時期 to let esure know that you had items of jewellery 価値(がある) more than £1,500. The only problem is you didn’t know that you had.

Hidden treasures? It is worth checking that you don't have items that you've forgotten about that may be of some worth in your home to avoid underinsurance

Hidden treasures? It is 価値(がある) checking that you don't have items that you've forgotten about that may be of some 価値(がある) in your home to 避ける underinsurance

esure also valued the remaining items in your home that had not been stolen as その上の 証拠 that you had undervalued your total 所持品 - as the 保険 would have covered both the items that were stolen and those that were not. ?

esure 追加するd: ‘We would never have agreed to 申し込む/申し出 you a 政策 if we had known you had as many as nine items 価値(がある) £1,500 or more, so if you had 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)d these items 適切に when asked to do so we would not have 申し込む/申し出d a 引用する.’

You say you were told by the person who carried out the valuation on your jewellery that many people at the moment are 存在 caught out by the rising cost of gold, which leaves them with items that are undervalued.

You 恐れる this is what ha ppened in your 事例/患者. ?

You also took your 事例/患者 to the ombudsman, who agreed that esure was not 強いるd to 支払う/賃金 out to you.

The 事例/患者 is a 脅すing 思い出の品 that buying 保険 is something that deserves a fair bit of time and 研究.

Price comparison websites make the 過程 look so 平易な that it can be 平易な to forget that 政策s do 変化させる かなり and that a simple oversight such as yours can be very 高くつく/犠牲の大きい.

Warning: esure recommends reviewing your home contents insurance to make sure you're covered at times such as Christmas, when you may have more valuable items in your home

A spokesperson for esure even told This is Money that it is 価値(がある) checking 全世界の 物価s before you re new a 政策 if you have a few items 含む/封じ込めるing a lot of gold or diamonds or other precious 石/投石するs.

Your 事例/患者 also 示唆するs that ignorance about the value of items is also no excuse for underinsuring.

esure showed no leniency because you did not know that items were 価値(がある) more than £1,500.?

So in general it’s 価値(がある) thinking through all of your items carefully. Have you an old 絵 on your 塀で囲む that was given to you by your grandparents? Or a piece of furniture that has been around for as long as you can remember that might be 価値(がある) a few quid? It might be 価値(がある) getting it valued just to be on the 安全な 味方する.

A spokesperson for esure 追加するd: The 推薦 we would 供給する to your readers to 確実にする they are 適切な covered and don’t find themselves in the same 状況/情勢 as VJ is to:

1. Read the 政策 条件 and 条件s carefully

2. Identify what 所有/入手s you are wishing to cover under your home contents 保険

3. Identify how much each item is 価値(がある) and whether they 違反 any of the 条件 or 条件s in the 政策 存在 適用するd for

4. Ask the 保険 company about any areas you are not sure of

5. If in 疑問 about anything to do with the 政策 or your 所有/入手s, always let the 保険会社 know さもなければ the 政策 could b e cancelled if it 違反s the 条件 and 条件s of the 政策

6. Take the time to make sure you are covered 適切な for your needs

7. Review the correspondence you receive from your 保険 company to 確実にする you have done everything you need to do

8. Review your 政策 cover 定期的に to see if you are still adequately covered if or when you make 重要な 世帯 購入(する)s and/or during 重要な life changes such as:

a. Getting married

b. Moving in with a partner

c. Having children

d. 祝賀s such as Christmas, christenings, weddings, 約束/交戦s
