Beware this 罠(にかける) if you cash in your 年金: Why 350,000 over-55s 危険 their 税金-解放する/自由な 貯金 allowance 存在 削除するd

  • People can save £40,000 a year in a 年金 without 支払う/賃金ing 税金 on 出資/貢献s
  • They can then take out up to 25% of a 年金 as a 税金-解放する/自由な lump sum at age 55
  • But once they 身を引く any more money, allowance is 削除するd to £4,000 a year?

When charity 労働者 Nigel Hughes used his 年金 to 支払う/賃金 off 長年の 負債s in 2015, he thought he’d つまずくd の上に a shrewd 財政上の move.

Nigel, from Cheshire, had just turned 55, but was struggling financially and 恐れるd losing his 職業, leaving him unable to 支払う/賃金 the 利益/興味 on his 貸付金s.

But new 支配するs introduced that year meant the over-55s could now 接近 their entire 年金s in 十分な to use as they pleased.?

Allowance: Most people can save £40,000 a year into their pension without paying tax on their contributions. They can then take out up to 25% of their pension tax-free from age 55

For Nigel, it was a lifeline and he cashed out a third of his 年金 ― £36,000 ― to (疑いを)晴らす his 負債s, with a 見解(をとる) to 補充するing the マリファナ later.

What he didn’t realise was that the 決定/判定勝ち(する) would irreversibly 損失 his ability to save for 退職 and 潜在的に cost him thousands of 続けざまに猛撃するs.?

By 身を引くing such a large chunk of cash, he had unwittingly 誘発する/引き起こすd a little-known 税金 刑罰,罰則 that would 減ずる the 量 he could put 支援する into the 年金.?

普通は, the 量 savers can put into a 年金 税金-解放する/自由な is capped at £40,000 a year. But once you’ve tapped into your 年金 this 急落(する),激減(する)s to just £4,000 a year.

The main exception to this is when you take out only the first 25 per cent of your マリファナ as your 税金-解放する/自由な lump sum.

So when Nigel tried to start 再構築するing his 年金 マリファナ three years later, he was horrified to learn that he’d had fallen foul of the 支配する.

If he breaks the 支配する, he 直面するs a 抱擁する 税金 刑罰,罰則. He has already forgone at least £18,000 in 可能性のある 年金 出資/貢献s from his 雇用者.

Nigel says: ‘It just seems so 不公平な, I’m 存在 penalised for trying not to be a 重荷(を負わせる) on anyone and getting my 財政/金融s 支援する on 跡をつける. I had no idea about this 税金 罠(にかける).’

Nigel is one of about 353,500 older 労働者s saving into modern workplace 年金s who could 落ちる foul of this ‘深く,強烈に 不公平な’ 税金 chokehold, Money Mail can 明らかにする/漏らす.

One in four over-55s 与える/捧げるd more than £4,000 to their 年金 マリファナs in 2020-21, によれば new 政府 見積(る)s, meaning they would be liable for a 税金 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 if they had dipped into their 年金.

The new 人物/姿/数字s were 明らかにする/漏らすd in a letter from 経済的な 長官 to the 財務省 Andrew Griffith to 仲買人 AJ Bell, seen by Money Mail.

Retirement fund: In modern workplace pensions, your employer must pay in at least 3% of your salary

This far 越えるs previous 見積(る)s from the 政府, which (人命などを)奪う,主張するd that only 3 per cent of older 労働者s ― 同等(の) to 42,400 ― paid £4,000 into their 年金s.

年金 providers are under no 義務 to 警告する savers of the danger when they put in a request to draw cash out.

About 1,200 people dipped into their 年金 for the first time every day in the first half of 2022, によれば 研究 from 退職 provider Just Group. However, there are 恐れるs that many more could 誘発する/引き起こす the 税金 罠(にかける) this year.

The number of people 接近ing their 年金s for the first time jumped by almost a fifth last year compared with 2021, with 705,666 taking out money for the first time to make ends 会合,会う as living costs 急に上がるd, によれば data from the City 監視者.

Someone 与える/捧げるing 14 per cent a year to their 退職 マリファナ would need to earn only £30,000 ― いっそう少なく than the UK’s 普通の/平均(する) salary ― to max out their lower £4,000 税金-解放する/自由な allowance.

Even by the most 保守的な 見積(る)s, a 労働者 would need to earn £50,000 a year and 支払う/賃金 in just 8 per cent― the 最小限 量 労働者s can 与える/捧げる ― to 違反 the 現在の 制限.

Many older 労働者s are in far more generous 年金 手はず/準備 than this.

Tom Selby, 長,率いる of 退職 政策 at 仲買人 A J Bell, says: ‘The 現在の allowance is 深く,強烈に 不公平な and ridiculously 刑罰の.

‘Keeping it as it is 危険s creating a 状況/情勢 where those who have used their 年金 マリファナ to cover 予期しない costs during the 現在の 危機 are hamstrung when trying to 再構築する their マリファナs in the 未来.’

The 政府 is under 圧力 to raise the allowance as part of its 企て,努力,提案 to get more people over 50 to return to work.

Last month, the (ドイツなどの)首相/(大学の)学長 Jeremy 追跡(する) 開始する,打ち上げるd a (選挙などの)運動をする to encourage retirees 支援する into work to 増加する 経済的な activity, telling them: ‘Britain needs you.’

But many who do will be caught in the 逮捕する of this 税金.

Baroness Ros Altmann, a former 年金s 大臣, says the 現在の allowance is a disincentive to keep working for some of the most experienced and 価値のある staff.

‘The 支配するs are 複雑にするd and many people may 結局最後にはーなる 支払う/賃金ing 税金 without realising they are liable,’ she 追加するs.
