Picture perfect: The 絵s that look just like photographs

A tattoo artist from Essex is the 支配する of a 9ft by 7ft portrait 存在 明かすd at the 国家の Portrait Gallery today.

Zoe Windle, 35, was painted in her bra by celebrated realist artist Jason Brooks, whose 絵s are so lifelike that they 似ている photographs.

Her image will hang と一緒に two more large Brooksworks? -? a portrait of Nobel prize-winning scientist Sir Paul Nurse, (売買)手数料,委託(する)/委員会/権限d by the gallery, and another of 決まり文句/製法 1 driver Jenson Button.

Ms Wendle, who 作品 in a tattoo parlour in Southend, said: "It's so exciting to have a picture of yourself hanging in the 国家の Portrait Gallery? -? but it's probably more exciting for Jason.

"I think it's a fantastic portrait and it's やめる scary to see myself in such a stark light? -? you can see all the imperfections. You can even see where the 署名/調印する on my tattoos has faded.

"My only 関心 is that I think it makes me look older. I was in my late twenties when it was painted but I look older than that."

She was not 関心d about thousands of people seeing her in a bra, 説: "They won't know who I am. Even if I was standing next to it they probably wouldn't recognise me because my hair's a different colour."

Brooks met his muse at a tattoo parlour in Clerkenwell, where Ms Wendle worked a receptionist.

She said: "He was having a tattoo done and I used to 調書をとる/予約する him in for 任命s and bring him cups of tea. He asked me if he could paint my portrait and I thought, '冷静な/正味の.'"

All three portraits relate to the artist's fascination with mortality: Sir Paul specialises in 癌 研究, Jenson Button is engaged in a dangerous sport and Ms Wendle 耐えるs 苦痛 to decorate her 団体/死体.

Brooks said: "What's really important to me is having that pornographic gaze, that 法廷の 詳細(に述べる). The 欠陥s, the 示すs? -? they're the things that I 落ちる in love with."

He uses his own photographs as the source for his 絵s but he does not regard himself as a photorealist.

"My work is ephemeral and that relates to photography, the funereal 面 of photography, 逮捕(する)ing that frozen moment," he said.

He 適用するs paint using an airbrush to create every 詳細(に述べる). From a distance the images are はっきりと defined, but の近くに-up they are made up of abstract forms.

Catherine Bromley, spokeswoman for the 国家の Portrait Gallery, said: "You could see it as a 出発 for us but we always 押し進める to repres ent new work, of which this is a good example.

“When you come into the 同時代の gallery you see Zoe in 前線 of you and it's a 抱擁する canvas. It really is a very bold 声明. I think people will be やめる surprised and, hopefully, やめる impressed."

The 陳列する,発揮する runs until 1 October.
