Just after 6am on April 2, 1982, the Argentinians 侵略するd the Falkland Islands, which they call Las Malvinas. MP Alan Clark told his wife Jane: ‘We’ve lost the Falklands. It’s all over. We’re a 第三世界 country, no good for anything.’

However, Mrs Thatcher was 説得するd that a 仕事 軍隊 of about 100 ships could be 速く 組み立てる／集結するd to 再度捕まえる the islands.

Its first 不快な／攻撃 活動／戦闘 was the 再度捕まえる of the island of South Georgia on April 25 ― news of which the アイロンをかける Lady famously 迎える／歓迎するd with the word ‘rejoice’.

On May 21, the first British 軍隊／機動隊s landed on East Falkland, but the Argentine 空気／公表する 軍隊 was （打撃，刑罰などを）与えるing 厳しい 損失 on British 軍艦s ― HMS Sheffield, Ardent, Antelope and Coventry were sunk, many others 損失d.

On May 25, the SS 大西洋 Conveyor was 攻撃する，衝突する, 殺人，大当り 12 of the 乗組員 and destroying her 貨物 of ten ヘリコプターs, needed to carry 軍隊／機動隊s to the Falklands’ 資本／首都, Port Stanley.

To 解放する the islands, the men now had to walk, or ‘yomp’, 50 miles across East Falkland carrying 120 lb of 道具. In 早期に June, the 厳しい South 大西洋 winter arrived, which meant there were only a few days left before 天候 条件s would put victory on a knife 辛勝する／優位.

Friday, June 11

10am Falklands Time

Argentine 軍隊／機動隊s have spent almost 70 days in the mountains of East Falkland, living in テントs or 避難所s made from 激しく揺するs and turf. Their ざん壕s are waterlogged and many 兵士s are 苦しむing from frostbite and ざん壕 foot; some of their 器具／備品 is rusting.

One 徴集兵 解任するd: ‘We were 冷淡な, wet and hungry. I had three pairs of socks; I wore them all at once and never changed them.’

Food is 不十分な, and when 小包s from home arrive in Port Stanley, they are 略奪するd by other 軍隊／機動隊s based there.

2pm

潜水するd off the coast of Argentina, the 王室の 海軍 核の-力／強力にするd 潜水艦 HMS 征服者／勝利者 is 供給するing 早期に 警告 of enemy 航空機. Five weeks earlier, on May 2, the 征服者／勝利者 sank the Argentine 巡洋艦 General Belgrano and 290 sailors were killed 即時に; another 33 死なせる／死ぬd in the water or in life rafts. From the 征服者／勝利者, the sound of the Belgrano breaking up was ‘like the tinkling of glass from a 抱擁する chandelier that has 衝突，墜落d to the ground’.

6pm

Trudi McPhee is a sixth-世代 islander who lives on a sheep farm on East Falkland. For two weeks, she and other 農業者s have been using their 乗り物s to carry 軍隊／機動隊s, 供給（する）s and 弾薬／武器 up the mountains, いつかs 運動ing without headlights, relying on moonlight to find their way.

As Trudi will be 近づく the 活動／戦闘, an officer from 3 Para tells her to 令状 a letter to her next of 肉親，親類 in 事例／患者 she doesn’t come 支援する. ‘Things are going to get pretty serious,’ Trudi 令状s to her parents, 追加するing she loves them very much.

7pm

Nine thousand British 軍隊／機動隊s are now in position の近くに to the hills between them and Port Stanley. After the 50-mile yomp, many of their boots have all but 崩壊するd and their 北極の テントs were lost on the 大西洋 Conveyor.

After the 血まみれの 戦う／戦い for Goose Green two weeks earlier, 准將 Julian Thompson, 指揮官 of 3 特殊部隊員 旅団, knows moving men across the open 地形 in daylight is suicidal.

He has decided to carry out all his attacks at night. Their first 客観的なs are Argentine positions on 開始する Harriet, Two Sisters and 開始する Longdon which are 封鎖するing the way to Port Stanley.

7.05pm

The start of the attack has been 延期するd as some 部隊s are lost. The 指揮官 of 2 Para, 中尉／大尉／警部補-陸軍大佐 David Chaundler, walks 支援する to his 一時的な HQ singing Land Of Hope And Glory loudly, as he can’t remember the password to give the 歩哨s.

At HQ, he is given a 逮捕（する）d Argentine 地図／計画する which shows he and his men are about to 前進する into a minefield. Chaundler remembers an army lecturer once telling him that the 半端物s of stepping on a 地雷 are small, so he decides the attack will take place as planned.

When Chaundler later told the lecturer what he’d done, the man was shocked: ‘My God, if I’d have known somebody was going to put the theory to the 実験（する）, I’d never have used that example!’

8.15pm

The attack on 開始する Longdon begins. Many Argentine 兵士s are caught by surprise. Cabo Oscar Carrizo, of 7th 連隊, 解任するd: ‘I heard a clunk-click, then many clunk-clicks. I knew that sound. It was 銃剣 存在 直す／買収する，八百長をするd. Panic 殺到するd through my 団体／死体.’

On the other 味方する of 開始する Longdon, Trudi McPhee can hear the whistle of Argentine 迫撃砲 一連の会議、交渉／完成するs 飛行機で行くing に向かって her, ‘but they’d plop into the peat and were lost’.

10pm

フリゲート艦s HMS Arrow and HMS Active 援助（する） the ground attack by 解雇する／砲火／射撃ing at Argentine positions.

On HMS Hermes, the 仕事 軍隊 指揮官, 後部 海軍大将 Sandy Woodward, is 令状ing a 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる） of ships lost: ‘Two 破壊者s sunk, three 本気で 損失d; two フリゲート艦s sunk, two 本気で 損失d; one コンテナ ship sunk; two LSLs [Land Ship 兵たん業務] sunk, one 本気で 損失d.’ The 仕事 軍隊 has been 本気で 弱めるd.

Woodward 令状s: ‘率直に, if the Args could only breathe on us, we’d 落ちる over! Perhaps they’re the same way: can only 信用 so, さもなければ we’re in for a carve-up.’

Midnight

Every night from 11pm to 3am, the 王室の 海軍 軍艦s have been 砲撃するing Argentine positions around Port Stanley. Some islanders 避難所 in the Anglican church or in a large storehouse.

A 逸脱する 爆撃する 攻撃する，衝突するs a house. Doreen Bonner and Susan Whitley are killed and several others 負傷させるd. Mary Goodwin dies later.

Doreen’s 団体／死体 is 設立する by John Fowler, the islands’ Superintendent of Education, her glasses covered with dust. John said: ‘She was a very meticulous person . . . she would certainly have 手配中の，お尋ね者 me to wipe them.’

Saturday, June 12

1am

On 開始する Longdon, as the Argentinians 戦う／戦い in the dark with little 選択 but to 降伏する, many fight to the death.

British 死傷者s are 開始するing. Sergeant Ian McKay of 3 Para 選ぶs four men, breaks cover with them and runs 上りの／困難な. He is soon alone, his comrades dead or 負傷させるd. He 圧力（をかける）s on over the 首脳会議.

Sergeant McKay’s 団体／死体 was 設立する in the morning, surrounded by dead Argentinians. He was posthumously awarded a VC.

2am

Argentine 准將-General Jofre, in Port Stanley, is told his 軍隊／機動隊s on 開始する Longdon are 存在 侵略（する）／超過（する）. He orders his 大砲 to 解雇する／砲火／射撃 on the hill and looks at the Argentine 知事, General Menendez, as if to say: ‘May God 許す me if any Argentinians are still fighting there.’

The 大砲 原因（となる）s 死傷者s on both 味方するs.

6.30am

After eight hours of fighting, 開始する Longdon is taken by the British. All three hills have been 逮捕（する）d, with the loss of 24 men. About 60 more are 負傷させるd. The Argentinians have lost 85 men.

Although some British 軍隊／機動隊s are 積極的な to 逮捕（する）d Argentinians, there are 行為／法令／行動するs of 親切. One 海洋 lies と一緒に an 負傷させるd Argentinian while his fellow 海洋s light a 解雇する／砲火／射撃 to make sure he doesn’t lose 団体／死体 heat.

6.36am

An Argentine ミサイル 発射台 on East Falkland 解雇する／砲火／射撃s an Exocet ミサイル at the 破壊者 HMS Glamorgan, 18 miles 沖合いの／海外の. The alarm sounds and Glamorgan turns はっきりと, but the Exocet clips the upper deck and 爆発するs, 点火（する）ing 燃料 in the ship’s ヘリコプター.

炎上s leap hundreds of feet into the 空気／公表する. Eight men are killed 即時に and 燃やすing 燃料 注ぐs below decks, starting a 解雇する／砲火／射撃 in the galley. Four cooks and a steward die. The most 厳しい 傷害s are 原因（となる）d by Formica in the galley 後援ing ‘like carving knives’.

9am

Neville Bennett is a 消防士 in Port Stanley; his wife Valerie is a nurse. The night before, she had been tending to the 負傷させるd from the 海軍の 砲撃. Through binoculars, Neville watches the fighting in the hills. He sees gun flashes and men running, then 位置／汚点／見つけ出すs three men in an Argentine lorry 長，率いるing に向かって him.

Suddenly the lorry 消えるs in a puff of smoke. He 令状s in his diary: ‘Much as I didn’t want the Argentines here, I 設立する it most disconcerting seeing them killed, even through binoculars.’

4pm

News about HMS Glamorgan has reached London. Mrs Thatcher wears 黒人／ボイコット for 軍隊／機動隊ing the Colour because, as she wrote later, ‘there was so much to 嘆く／悼む’.

On HMS Glamorgan, with the 解雇する／砲火／射撃s 消滅させるd, there is a sunset service for the 13 dead.

乗組員 members 令状 messages on the canvas 捕らえる、獲得するs 持つ／拘留するing the 団体／死体s. Glamorgan has too few ensigns to cover each one, so they borrow some from other ships. One by one, the 団体／死体s are dropped into the sea.

4.30pm

Valerie Bennett arrives home after her 転換 at the Port Stanley hospital. She tells her husband that as the 団体／死体s of the two Falklands women who died in the 砲撃 were carried to the 霊安室, 負傷させるd Argentinians stood in 尊敬の印 and made the 調印する of the cross.

But then she says 怒って: ‘The 血まみれの Argy reporters 手配中の，お尋ね者 to photograph the 団体／死体s. I told them no! I locked the 霊安室 door and put the 重要な in my pocket.’

Sunday, June 13

王室の 海洋s Major-General Jeremy Moore had plann ed for the 前進する on Port Stanley to 再開する last night, but the 大砲 have only a few 一連の会議、交渉／完成するs left. They are waiting for Sea King ヘリコプターs to bring more 弾薬／武器.

10am

The P&O 巡航する liner SS Uganda, requisitioned for use as a hospital ship, is moored off West Falkland with 300 患者s on board. Her 医療の teams have 扱う／治療するd more than 120 燃やすs 患者s, 含むing Welsh Guardsman Simon Weston, who 苦しむd 46 per cent 燃やすs when the Sir Galahad was 攻撃する，衝突する on June 8. Simon’s fight to 回復する from his 傷害s will later 逮捕（する） the British public’s imagination.

Some 兵士s have 厳しい nicotine 撤退 but have burnt 手渡すs, so P&O 乗組員 help them to put cigarettes in their mouths.

A popular film shown in the 区s is Monty Python’s Life Of Brian. The 患者s sing along to Always Look On The 有望な 味方する Of Life, to the amazement of the medics.

Midday

海軍の photographer Peter Holdgate is behind 王室の 海洋s Corporal Pete Robinson crossing a minefield. Robinson has a Union 旗 大（公）使館員d to his 無線で通信する mast and because it has been raining, the 旗 is hanging limply.

Suddenly, the 勝利，勝つd fills the 旗 and Holdgate takes a picture that will appear in newspapers around the world (and which is 再生するd on the previous page). In 未来 years, 兵士s tell Corporal Robinson that he is the 推論する／理由 they joined the 海洋s.

8pm

Many Falkland Islanders are tuned in to the BBC World Service programme Calling The Falklands. It used to be a music show but has been turned into a programme carrying special news 公式発表s and messages from public 人物／姿／数字s, such as the 知事 of the Falklands, Rex 追跡（する）, wh o was 排除する／（飛行機などから）緊急脱出するd from the islands on the first day of the 侵略.

Presenter Peter King ends with his normal 賄賂: ‘Keep your 長，率いるs 負かす／撃墜する and your hearts high!’

9pm

The night attacks begin. The new 的s are Argentine positions on three hills ― Tumbledown, 開始する William and Wireless 山の尾根. The Scots Guards, who just a few weeks ago were patrolling Buckingham Palace, 嵐／襲撃する the most 決定的な 的 ― Tumbledown, a long, 狭くする 山の尾根 with a sheer 減少（する） on one 味方する.

Their password to identify friend from 敵 is ‘Hey Jimmie’, as the Argentinians have a very different pronunciation of ‘J’. Defending Tumbledown is the エリート Argentinian 5th 海洋 大隊, who より数が多い the British two to one. At one point they taunt the British and call on them to 降伏する.

Monday, June 14

1am

On Tumbledown, Scots Guardsman Jim Mitchell sees a flash out of the corner of his 注目する，もくろむ, then blackness. He has been 攻撃する，衝突する in the 長，率いる. As Jim is carried away on a 担架, a 狙撃者 opens 解雇する／砲火／射撃 and he is dropped to the ground. He manages to take cover の中で 激しく揺するs before 存在 led to a field ambulanc e.

2am

The Scots Guards have outmanoeuvred the Argentinians, who are surrounded and also now 存在 attacked from the 空気／公表する. They are fighting for their lives. 私的な Jose Ojeda 解任するd: ‘It was 殺人. There was no way to keep fighting.’ When he hears the British call to 降伏する, he and his comrades obey.

Michael Nicholson of ITN is with the Gurkhas on 開始する William. It’s so 冷淡な his カメラマン Bernard Hesketh, who fought on D-Day, has wrapped his coat around the camera to stop it 氷点の. Three フリゲート艦s 解雇する／砲火／射撃 more than 500 爆撃するs at Argentine positions. The British 押し進める on doggedly and soon Argentine 軍隊／機動隊s are 逃げるing に向かって Stanley in their hundreds.

7am

The islanders wake up to 厚い snow on the ground. It’s （疑いを）晴らす the Argentine 前線 has 崩壊（する）d: a stream of 兵士s is coming 負かす／撃墜する from the hills and they’re throwing their 武器s into 溝へはまらせる／不時着するs. One officer runs out of a building and starts 解雇する／砲火／射撃ing in the 空気／公表する, ordering them to stop and fight. They ignore him.

の近くに to 政府 House is a Chinook ヘリコプター which the islanders assume is for General Menendez, the Argentine 軍の 知事, to leave the island. When he took 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金, he 法令d that all traffic should 運動 on the 権利-手渡す 味方する of the road, that Spanish would be the 公式の／役人 language taught in schools and that pesos would 取って代わる 続けざまに猛撃するs 英貨の／純銀の. Port Stanley had been 改名するd Puerto Argentina.

10am

Lance-Corporal Denzil Connick, of 3 Para, has been 攻撃する，衝突する by 大砲 解雇する／砲火／射撃 and is 存在 flown to SS Uganda. He is taken to 集中的な care and, to his delight, placed in a bed next to a platoon mate, Michael ‘Mush’ Bateman, who has been 発射 through the throat. They mak e weak thumbs-up 調印するs to each other.

11am

The 長，率いる of the 軍事政権 in Argentina, General Galtieri, telephones General Menendez and tells him to ‘use all means at your 処分 and continue fighting with all the intensity with which you are 有能な’. Menendez replies that he has ‘no means at his 処分, no 軍隊／機動隊s, no high ground, no 弾薬／武器’. Galtieri gives him 許可 to 交渉する with the British.

Midday

The 夜通し snow is melting and 砲火 has mostly stopped. Word spreads の中で the 軍隊／機動隊s above Port Stanley that white 旗s have been seen over the 資本／首都. A Gurkha major surprises ITN’s Michael Nicholson with the news ― but his 乗組員 weren’t ready to film, so Nicholson asks the major to do it again.

1pm

Reporter Max Hastings is with 2 Para, the 部隊 closest to Stanley. Although the men have been told to 停止（させる）, Hastings decides to walk into the 資本／首都. He takes off his 偽装する jacket, dons a 非軍事の coat and 始める，決めるs off. In Stanley, Hastings bluffs his way to speak to an Argentine officer, then returns to British lines to 送信する／伝染させる the story of the victory 支援する to Britain as soon as possible.

1.30pm?

Prince Andrew, a Sea King 操縦する, brings 死傷者s from HMS Glamorgan on board SS Uganda. He is the first member of the 王室の Family since 1945 to have fought in a war.

At the 突発／発生 of the 衝突, when a Buckingham Palace 広報担当者 was asked if the Queen 手配中の，お尋ね者 to keep her son out of the war, he replied: ‘Prince Andrew is a serving officer and there is no question in her mind that he should go.’

2.05pm?

Not realising the British 軍隊／機動隊s are almost out of 弾薬／武器 and the 仕事 軍隊 ships are 使い果たすd, General Menendez believes he must 降伏する. He sends a message to Major-General Jeremy Moore asking for 停戦 条件. Soon, the British 長，指導者 交渉者 arrives by ヘリコプター at 政府 House.

3pm?

The Union 旗 is 飛行機で行くing once again over 政府 House. Firefighter Neville Bennett sees a man walking along a pavement shouting: ‘I’m British! I’m British!’ so the 地元のs know he’s friendly. The man is BBC 特派員 Brian Hanrahan, and soon a （人が）群がる gathers 一連の会議、交渉／完成する him.

On May 1, when based on HMS Hermes, Hanrahan had not been 許すd to say how many Sea Harriers had taken part in a （警察の）手入れ，急襲, so he famously said: ‘I counted them out and I counted them all 支援する.’

4pm

Max Hastings arrives on HMS Fearless with his scoop, only to be told by a 省 of Defence PR man: ‘I am afraid there is a 完全にする news 灯火管制／停電.’ The War 閣僚 want news of the 降伏する to be given first in the House of ありふれたs.

Hastings argues that Argentine 無線で通信する is already carrying the news, but the MoD team is unmoved. Hastings goes to bed ‘to 嘘（をつく） sleepless with 激怒（する） に向かって the system which had so effortlessly 妨害するd me’.

5.50pm

Michael Nicholson 株 Hastings’s 失望／欲求不満. In the UK, News At Ten will begin in ten minutes and he is desperate to make a live telephone call to the programme to tell テレビ視聴者s the war is over ― but he, too, is 否定するd 許可.

It takes three weeks for TV pictures to reach British 審査するs, so most news from the Falklands has been relayed by an MoD 圧力（をかける） officer in London 指名するd Ian McDonald, whose 配達／演説／出産 is so flat he has been 愛称d ‘McDalek’.

6.14pm

In the ありふれたs, Mrs Thatcher says: ‘After successful attacks last night, General Moore decided to 圧力（をかける） 今後. The Argentines 退却／保養地d. Our 軍隊s reached the 郊外s of Port Stanley. Large numbers of Argentine 兵士s threw 負かす／撃墜する their 武器s. They are 報告（する）／憶測d to be 飛行機で行くing white 旗s over Port Stanley.’

The House 元気づけるs. In the ロビー, Alan Clark catches up with Mrs Thatcher: ‘総理大臣, only you could have done this; you did it alone, and your place in history is 保証するd.’ She looks startled, while Home 長官 William Whitelaw looks irritated at Clark’s 爆発.

8.30pm

General Jeremy Moore arrives by ヘリコプター at 政府 House to 調印する the 降伏する 文書. Moore 辞退するs 許可 for TV cameras to film, so the historic event goes unseen by the wider world. ‘I felt that if there was half of a tenth of a 1 per cent chance that having the thing filmed might put Menendez off 降伏するing, it would be a 危険 it could not be proper for me to take.’

9.15pm

The 降伏する 文書 is 調印するd. Clutching a 瓶／封じ込める of whisky to celebrate, General Moore 長，率いるs to the storehouse where many islanders have gathered for safety. He tells them: ‘I’m sorry it has taken us so long to get here.’

In 負かす／撃墜するing Street, which is filled with 元気づける （人が）群がるs, Mrs Thatcher goes to bed contented. ‘I felt an enormous 重荷（を負わせる） had been 解除するd from my shoulders and 未来 worries would be small compared with those which had been with us 絶えず for 11 weeks.’

10pm

News of the 降伏する reaches the 集中的な care 区 on SS Uganda. Lance-Corporal Denzil Connick pulls his bedsheet over his 直面する and sobs. He said: ‘I wept for my friends, I wept for myself, but most of all I wept with 救済 that その上の 苦しむing might at last be over.’

影響

The Falklands （選挙などの）運動をする cost the lives of 255 British servicemen, 649 Argentines and three Falkland islanders. Few men （機の）カム home without some psychological scars.

The war is 概算の to have cost £1 million for every island 居住（者）. 知事 Rex 追跡（する） returned to 政府 House to find the ワイン cellar and freezer had been emptied, and that General Menendez had left a pair of pyjamas in his 病人の枕元 閣僚.

追跡（する） wrote later: ‘As they were 厚い and warmer than 地雷, I had no compunction about wearing them.’

追跡（する） took 負かす／撃墜する pictures of General Galtieri from the 製図／抽選 room and 取って代わるd them with a picture of the Queen.?
