Why Charles and Camilla should marry

by GEORGE AUSTIN, former Archdeacon of York

Ten years ago, I 原因(となる)d a 嵐/襲撃する that rumbled on for months and even brought calls for me to 辞職する as Archdeacon of York. It began on the Today 無線で通信する programme with a 公正に/かなり innocent question from presenter Peter Hobday.

There were growing rumours that Prince Charles was having an 事件/事情/状勢 with a married woman, Camilla Parker Bowles, and I was asked if this would produce problems if Charles were to become king.

'My 見解(をとる),' I replied, 'would be that Charles made solemn 公約するs in church about his marriage, 公約するs that, if the rumours are true, he began to break.

'He has broken his 信用 and 公約するs to God on one thing. How can he then go into Westminster Abbey and take 載冠(式)/即位(式) 公約するs?'

It was nothing I had not said before, but this time all hell broke loose.

Letters 注ぐd in, almost a thousand of them, and these were in 協定 with what I had said by at least four to one.

And most of those against 簡単に said that the Church needed to get its own house in order before it dared to criticise anyone else.

From then on, I was 'the churchman who said Charles was unfit to be king'. In reality, I had said nothing of the sort. I have always believed that Charles will be an excellent king.

A 10年間 on and the rumours of a 王室の 事件/事情/状勢 long ago became a reality.

Charles - by his own admission - did break the solemn 公約するs he made beneath the 広大な/多数の/重要な ドーム of St Paul's.

I still believe he was wrong to do so. But I now think that he must marry Camilla Parker Bowles, にもかかわらず the 障害s the Church 現在/一般に puts in his way.

The world has turned since the unhappy days of his failing marriage. Two deaths have changed utterly the moral universe in which Prince Charles finds himself, and which seems to mesmerise him so.

He is now 解放する/自由な to remarry, after the 悲劇の death of Diana, Princess of むちの跡s.

And the pa ssing of the Queen Mother seems to have 原因(となる)d his people to take a different 態度 to him, and to the place of the 君主国 in the modern world.

Now Charles is 率直に living with the 離婚d Mrs Parker Bowles who is slowly and surely 存在 introduced into public life with the Prince.

Her 外見 at a concert at Buckingham Palace …に出席するd by the Queen last month, followed by her 招待 to the Queen Mother's funeral, have raised the question of when - rather than if - the Prince will marry Camilla.

An opinion 投票 this week 示唆するs that more than half of the country believe that the couple should marry - and I agree with them.

Camilla is 明確に the love of his life and that is one of the 推論する/理由s - not the only one - I believe they should marry.

Charles is a 深く,強烈に 極度の慎重さを要する and serious man, 関心d about the 明言する/公表する and fibre of our society, and Camilla is necessary to him and good for him.

This is not a 事柄 of theology or 憲法 but of human compassion.

But they must not 急ぐ into marriage as the gossips - and at least one of the tabloids - are 示唆するing.

One of the 耐えるing memories of the Queen Mother's funeral was the anguish on the 直面する of Prince Charles at the death of his beloved grandmother, and with the 深い love and 尊敬(する)・点 he held for her, it is 考えられない that he himself would want a marriage to take place before a proper interval had passed - perhaps a couple or more years.

And there are other 関心s. While popular opinion may be veering に向かって the Prince and his mistress, there are still practical problems that must be 演説(する)/住所d before our 未来 King and his 長年の love can marry. Even the 長,率いる of the Church of England cannot bend the 支配するs on 離婚s.

So far as the Church of England is 関心d, no one who has been 離婚d can remarry in church during the lifetime of a former partner.

That an 増加するing number of clergy 行為/行う such weddings is 簡単に because the 明言する/公表する 法律 許すs them to do so, and all clergy must make their own conscientious 決定/判定勝ち(する) whether to follow the 支配する of the Church or the 法律 of the land.

But it is possible that the Church's strict 支配する may soon be changed, and a 報告(する)/憶測 on this, produced by a (売買)手数料,委託(する)/委員会/権限 議長,司会を務めるd by the Bishop of Winchester, is likely to be discussed by the General 教会会議 at its July 開会/開廷/会期s this year.

It (人命などを)奪う,主張するs not to 提案する a total abandonment of the 支配するs against remarriage, and there are 明確に defined 禁止s - for instance where either party has 原因(となる)d their partner's previous marriage to come to grief: a factor that may 適用する in Charles's 事例/患者, if his 事件/事情/状勢 with Camilla was instrumental in her break-up from her husband.

On the surface, it looks like proper Christian charity to 許す the freedom for all 離婚d people to be married in Church - a symbol of the truth that all are 受託するd, 関わりなく past mistakes.

But what about a 拒絶するd wife who had 苦しむd 乱用 and humiliation from her husband?

Her 苦痛 would be made infinitely worse if she knew that the Church was blessing that same man's second marriage.

I believe that a high-profile Church wedding would be 高度に 容認できない anyway, not only in the light of 現在の 支配するs of the Church but also to a 大多数 of the public, who still 持つ/拘留する Diana in high regard.

However, the 緩和 of the 法律 now 許すing civil marriages to take place in 発生地s other than a 登録(する) office means that such a 儀式 could be 行為/行うd 静かに and with dignity in one of the 王室の palaces.

Would it be so impossible that the would-be 'Defender of the 約束s' should have a civil wedding. If the last 10年間 has taught us anything, it is that modern morality moves very 急速な/放蕩な.

So should Camilla be Queen? Forty per cent of those 投票d were in favour of marriage for Charles and Camilla but only on 反対/詐欺 dition that Camilla did not become Queen.

There is, as I see it, a 解答, and one that is 完全に in keeping with the modern understanding of equality.

When King George VI (機の)カム to the 王位, Elizabeth as his wife became Queen.

But when her daughter Elizabeth 後継するd King George, Philip could only be prince consort with the 肩書を与える Duke of Edinburgh.

Would it not be possible and more in keeping with the times for there to be a 類似の practice when the 相続人 to the 王位 is male?

And may I make a suggestion? As a Lancastrian, I know that the Loyal Toast in my home 郡 is 'The Queen, the Duke of Lancaster.'

When Charles 後継するs to the 王位, he will 相続する this 古代の 肩書を与える.

So surely, it would make sense that after Charles becomes king - with Camilla as his wife - we should speak of King Charles and the Duchess of Lancaster.

Here's happiness - and wedded bliss - to both of them.
