Church leaders agreed that new windows showing Jesus 描写するd ‘in 多重の ethnicities’ could now be 任命する/導入するd at St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol.

The 決定/判定勝ち(する) by the Consistory 法廷,裁判所 of The Diocese of Bristol (機の)カム three years to the day since the 倒れるing of Colston’s statue in the city on June 7, 2020.

The Grade I-名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)d church had 除去するd the Colston パネル盤s in 2021. They were 取って代わるd with 一時的な plain パネル盤s before the church 開始する,打ち上げるd a 競争 to design new 永久の 交替/補充 stain glass パネル盤s, won by 地元の artist and junior doctor, Earlish (CORR) Swift.

In her submission for the 競争, Ms Swift said the image ‘portrays the 現在の 難民 危機, and Jesus as a child 難民 逃げるing to Egypt’.

The old windows 株d Colston’s family motto ‘go thou and do likewise’ - a biblical 引用する from the parable of the ‘Good Samaritan’, and the new windows 株 a different 引用する from the same passage: ‘And who is my 隣人?’

A 広報担当者 for St Mary Redcliffe Church - the tallest building in Bristol thanks to its 292ft high spire - said the new パネル盤s 言及/関連d Bristol’s rich multicultural past and 現在の.

'The new パネル盤s 描写する Jesus in 多重の ethnicities to 反対する the anglo-centric narrative of "white Jesus",’ he said.

'To encourage parishioners to look at a 記念の to a slave 仲買人 and to be encourage to "Go thou and do likewise" is not only grotesque but 完全に contrary to the Gospel 命令(する) to love one another,' he 追加するd.

St Mary Redcliffe was 述べるd by Queen Elizabeth I upon visiting in 1574 as 'the fairest, goodliest and most famous parish church in England'.

One of the other パネル盤s in 行方不明になる Swift’s winning submission celebrates the Bristol Bus ボイコット(する) - which 覆うd the way for the Race Relations 行為/法令/行動する of 1965 - with Jesus as a fellow 抗議する人 and 過激な.

The other two パネル盤s show a Bristol ship on a slaving voyage, 言及/関連ing the story of J esus 静めるing the 嵐/襲撃する, and a diverse group of '隣人s' 直面するing the 未来 'in a 陳列する,発揮する of hope and togetherness', the artist - who lives in Redcliffe - said.

The church has said 以前 that although the 交替/補充 of the Colston windows were 誘発するd by the 倒れるing of Colston’s statue - which itself (機の)カム まっただ中に an 現在進行中の 審議 about the Colston 遺産/遺物 in Bristol - the 決定/判定勝ち(する) was also part of a larger 過程 of ‘探検 of and 約束/交戦 with contested 遺産’ which will continue.

Colston was born in Bristol in 1636 and grew up in the city. He made the 本体,大部分/ばら積みの of his fortune after joining the 王室の African Company, which had a monopoly on the west African slave 貿易(する), in 1680.

He later began to develop a 評判 as a philanthropist who 寄付するd to charitable 原因(となる)s such as schools and hospitals in Bristol and London.
