Where is 行方不明の Claudia Lawrence? 15 years since she 消えるd, her mother 明らかにする/漏らすs to KATHRYN KNIGHT how she feels the 調査 was botched - and her 激怒(する) over what the 探偵,刑事 in 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 said about the chef's love life

The moment she wakes up, and just before she goes to bed, Joan Lawrence says a little 祈り. ‘いつかs during the day too, if I’m struggling,’ she 収容する/認めるs.

That 祈り has never changed. It is a 深く心に感じた 嘆願 for an answer to a question that has haunted her since March 19, 2009: where is her daughter Claudia?

Claudia was 35 when she disappeared from her two-bedroom terrace home on the 郊外s of York.

To all 意図s and 目的s, she 消えるd into thin 空気/公表する. にもかかわらず an 広範囲にわたる police 調査 and a 冷淡な 事例/患者 review in 2013, no one has 設立するd what happened to her or where she might be.

It places Joan, now 80, in the small and unenviable group of parents of children who are 行方不明の but their 運命/宿命 unknown. ‘The most terrible limbo,’ as she calls it. ‘You’re grieving, but you can’t grieve 適切に.’

Claudia's mother Joan, 80, is determined to keep Claudia's?profile in the public arena and to appeal for any piece of information that might help to resolve the mystery

Claudia's mother Joan, 80, is 決定するd to keep Claudia's?profile in the public 円形競技場 and to 控訴,上告 for any piece of (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) that might help to 解決する the mystery

Nor, like others in that same terrible limbo ? の中で them Kate and Gerry McCann, to whom Joan has spoken in the past ? can she ever give up hope of getting to the truth.

It is why she is talking to the Daily Mail today, in a 決定するd 企て,努力,提案 to keep Claudia’s profile in the public 円形競技場 and to 控訴,上告 for any piece of (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状), however small, that might help to 解決する the mystery.

There is another poignant 推論する/理由 too. For many years, it was Joan’s ex-husband, Claudia’s retired solicitor father Peter, who was the public keeper of Claudia’s 炎上.

He died in 2020, going to his 墓/厳粛/彫る/重大な still not knowing what happened to his daughter, emboldening Joan ? who had always (選挙などの)運動をするd tirelessly behind the scenes ? to step 今後 into the 違反.

‘For so many years, I didn’t have a 発言する/表明する,’ she says. ‘I have one now, but I didn’t have one then and I will use it for as long as I can.’

It is a 発言する/表明する she is certainly using determinedly today in an interview in which she pulls no punches. Her 怒り/怒る about what she sees as police shortcomings is as strong as her grief is 深遠な.

‘Fundamentally, it’s appalling that we are 15 years on and there are no answers,’ she says. ‘It’s appalling it ever got this far and it needn’t have been the 事例/患者.

‘I’ve been told many times I would make a much better 探偵,刑事 than many of those 現在/一般に serving in the police. There are some good police officers, of course, and I had a good 関係 with some of those 伴う/関わるd in the 調査 over the years, but I have been 不正に let 負かす/撃墜する.’

We 会合,会う in a popular pub 近づく Joan’s home in Malton, the handsome Yorkshire town where Claudia and her older sister, Ali, were raised, and in which memories of her youngest daughter are everywhere.

‘They were happy times,’ she says. ‘I consider myself lucky that I had Claudia for 36 years. Kate McCann had Maddie for only four, and others have had even いっそう少なく.’

Claudia and Ali were raised in what Joan, who takes 広大な/多数の/重要な 慰安 from her 約束, calls a ‘Christian しつけ’. ‘She knew 権利 from wrong and we never had problems with her,’ she says. It was comfortable, too.?

Before they 離婚d in 1996, the Lawrence family had a nice house, a large garden and assorted pets. Animal-loving Claudia grew up riding ponies and cuddling the family’s King Charles spaniels. She …に出席するd 私的な school in York, then catering college, 結局 taking a 職業 as a chef in the canteen at the University of York.

It was, as Joan puts it, a ‘normal’ life. That is, until that time in March 2009 that would turn Claudia’s 見えなくなる into one of the nation’s most baffling 未解決の mysteries.

Joan does not dismiss a theory that her daughter may have fallen victim to double murderer Christopher Halliwell, a taxi driver serving a full life term for the sexually motivated murders of Becky Godden-Edwards and Sian O?Callaghan in Wiltshire

Joan does not 解任する a theory that her daughter may have fallen 犠牲者 to 二塁打 殺害者 Christopher Halliwell, a taxi driver serving a 十分な life 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 for the sexually 動機づけるd 殺人s of Becky Godden-Edwards and Sian O’Callaghan in Wiltshire

The facts are 井戸/弁護士席 文書d. On Wednesday, March 18, the last day she was seen, Claudia finished her catering 転換 at 2pm and was 記録,記録的な/記録するd on CCTV making her way home to her cottage in Heworth, around three miles from the city.

That evening she spoke on the phone to her father and her mother, the latter around 8.30pm. ‘We were both watching the same television programme, 場所, 場所, 場所,’ Joan 解任するs.

Claudia told Joan she planned to get up around 5am the next day to walk to work as her Vauxhall Corsa was in a garage for 修理s. It was a 45-minute walk.

動きやすい phone 記録,記録的な/記録するs show she received a text message from a friend living in Cyprus just after 9pm, though she did not reply.

It would be the last ever communication. Claudia did not show up for work the next day or to 会合,会う her friend, Suzy Cooper, that evening at her 地元の, the Nag’s 長,率いる, 据えるd just four doors 負かす/撃墜する from her cottage.

When she failed to 答える/応じる to calls, Suzy assumed she had fallen asleep, although Joan remains baffled as to why Suzy did not go to her house. ‘It was just a few doors away ? wouldn’t you just pop 負かす/撃墜する and try?’ she asks. Either way, when she failed to 答える/応じる to calls by Friday morning, Suzy cal led Claudia’s father Peter, who used his own 重要なs to enter her cottage.

Inside, there was no 調印する of a break-in. Claudia’s bed was made, there were a few dirty dishes in the 沈む. Only her chef’s whites, 動きやすい phone and hair straighteners were 行方不明の.

Data later showed that her 動きやすい phone never left the 地元の area and was deliberately switched off some hours after she failed to turn up for work.

As it was Mother’s Day, Joan was staying for the 週末 with Ali, who was by then living in Derbyshire with her husband and young family. The first she heard of what was happening was on Friday afternoon, when Peter called and said: ‘Claudia’s disappeared.’?

He had already 警報d the police and, in retrospect, Joan finds even this puzzling. Why did both he and the police assume Claudia was 行方不明の before checking to see if Joan or Ali had heard anything from her?

‘You would think that would be the first thing they would do’ she says.

When I ask how mother and daughter 答える/応じるd to the news, Joan’s 注目する,もくろむs fill with 涙/ほころびs. ‘I can’t talk about that,’ she says. ‘Some things must remain 私的な.’

What she knows now is that it was th e start of a nightmare from which she has never 現れるd, and which she believes has been 長引かせるd by any number of police errors.?

She professes astonishment that the photo 解放(する)d by police showed Claudia with blonde hair, not dark brown with auburn streaks as it was when she went 行方不明の. ‘I 申し込む/申し出d them an up-to-date one but they didn’t use it for four years,’ she says.

Nor was any 法廷の search undertaken at her cottage for six weeks. Joan says ‘Everyone knows that the first few days after someone goers 行方不明の are 決定的な. And they messed it up.’

Perhaps most 苦しめるing of all, 探偵,刑事 Superintendent Ray Galloway ― the man in 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 of what was by then a 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うd 殺人 enquiry ? made an 外見 on BBC TV’s Crimewatch and 述べるd Claudia’s love life as ‘コンビナート/複合体 and mysterious’.

Today Joan is (疑いを)晴らす she sees it as a form of ‘犠牲者-非難するing’ that drained sympathy for Claudia ? who, like many women her age, had 単に had a number of different partners in the years before her 見えなくなる.

This (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) 潜在的に 疎遠にするd other 証言,証人/目撃するs. ‘It was a lot of c**p that wasn’t true,’ she says 堅固に. ‘He should never have said it. Everyone 一連の会議、交渉/完成する here knew it wasn’t true ? it was a small community and people know what’s true and what isn’t.’

Galloway is now retired and Joan is withering in her 査定/評価 of his 行為/行う. ‘I met Galloway once for 15 minutes in the whole five years he was in 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金,’ she says. ‘He walked into my house and didn’t even say sorry for my loss. With that whole team, there was no sensitivity, no tact.’

She points out that she was forbid den from even entering her daughter’s home. ‘I’m her mother, I was の近くに to her,’ she says. ‘I could have spotted something that might have been useful. But more than that, where is the compassion?’

Nonetheless, for all Joan’s 怒り/怒る, North Yorkshire Police did seem to leave no 石/投石する unturned. Over the next few months, they took 2,517 声明s, checked 1,771 乗り物s, searched 38 homes and 商売/仕事 前提s, 診察するd 64 scenes and 実験(する)d more than 200 items for デオキシリボ核酸, all of which 産する/生じるd no 固める/コンクリート 証拠.

The 仮定/引き受けること was that Claudia had probably been 誘拐するd and 殺人d すぐに after leaving home on March 19 by a 地元の man known to her.

The 調査 had all but 立ち往生させるd when, in 2013, under the remit of a newly-設立するd Major 罪,犯罪 部隊, fresh 注目する,もくろむs were put on the 事例/患者 under the 監督 of 探偵,刑事 Superintendent Dai Malyn. Joan says: ‘I felt he listened and had ありふれた 儀礼.’

The team undertook a new 法廷の search of Claudia’s home and 発見 of a man’s デオキシリボ核酸 on a cigarette butt in her car led to 逮捕(する)s, but no one was 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金d and Joan remains 納得させるd other leads were 行方不明になるd.

‘Claudia would not sit in a car with someone who smoked. She loathed the smell, she wouldn’t stand anywhere 近づく someone smoking, so that had to come from someone she didn’t know, not an 知識,’ she says.?

Then, in August 2021, Joan learned that police, now led by 探偵,刑事 Superintendent Wayne Fox, who was 任命するd 上級の 調査/捜査するing officer in October 2020, were searching a gravel 炭坑,オーケストラ席 in Sand Hutton, North Yorkshire.

Today she is still 非,不,無 the wiser about why they did it.

‘They sent 70 officers to a small village and 推定する/予想するd it not to create headlines’ she says. ‘Something 重要な 明確に 誘発する/引き起こすd it, but they wouldn’t tell me what and I still don’t know to this day. Much of the time the police just do not bother to keep me 知らせるd.’

Twice in 最近の years, Joan 追加するs, 地元のs have identified 可能性のある new persons of 利益/興味, only to be 妨害するd by police.

‘One man went into a pub in Malton, and he knew things about Claudia that made the landlord 怪しげな,’ she says. ‘He tried to keep him talking while he called the police to get them to come along. But the 地元の police said they couldn’t send anyone, it had to come from York, and they didn’t come.?

'He couldn’t keep him talking 無期限に/不明確に and off he went. The same happened in a cafe 近づく the 駅/配置する. I have been 接触するd several times by people with new (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状), but when I take it the police they don’t listen.’

When the Mail 接触するd DS Fox, he said that while the 調査 has been in a ‘reactive 段階’ si nce 2017, he wants to make (疑いを)晴らす ‘the 調査 is not の近くにd’.

He 追加するd: ‘Even after such a passage of time, our 冷淡な 事例/患者 Review 部隊 continue to receive (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状). Every new piece of (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) is carefully 査定する/(税金などを)課すd against the 重要な 容積/容量s of 構成要素 that has been gathered over the course of the 調査.

‘If a 明確な/細部 line of enquiry is developed from 領収書 of new (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状), and grows in significance, we will take 決定的な 活動/戦闘, as we did when extensively searching the gravel 炭坑,オーケストラ席s at Sand Hutton in August 2021.

‘I hope the 規模 of activity which took place within that 操作/手術 明確に 論証するs that, if (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) is 有能な of 存在 効果的に developed, North Yorkshire Police will work tirelessly in our continued search for the truth.’

In the 合間, theory after ありそうもない theory has bloomed in the vacuum that Claudia’s absence has left behind ? の中で them that Claudia was trafficked abroad or that she decided to start a new life in Cyprus, where she had 以前 holidayed and had friends.

One theory Joan does not 解任する out of 手渡す, however, is that her daughter may have fallen 犠牲者 to 二塁打 殺害者 Christopher Halliwell, a taxi driver serving a 十分な life 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 for the sexually 動機づけるd 殺人s of Becky Godden-Edwards and Sian O’Callaghan in Wiltshire.

Halliwell has since been linked to many other violent offences against women 伴う/関わるing 強襲,強姦s, 強姦s, 見えなくなるs and 殺人s, with the date March 19 featuring in a number of these 事例/患者s.

I ask Joan what she thinks happened to her daughter, and it is now I see laid 明らかにする the grief that she has tried to manage throughout our interview. ‘I honestly don’t know. I just don’t know,’ she says, her 直面する stricken.

It is a haunting question that has underpinned the past 15 years as she navigates milestone after heart-breaking milestone.

In the last year alone, there have been two 特に poignant ones: her own 80th birthday and last month, when Claudia would have turned 50.

Joan, tiredness 広範囲にわたる over her features, says: ‘I can’t remember what I did on her birthday.’

She has watched Claudia’s friends get married at the church where she was christened, knowing she would have been a bridesmaid, then godmother to the children that followed, while Ali’s sons, now 19 and 15, have little to no memory of their aunt.

Joan knows that time is running out although she will never give up hope. ‘Someone out there knows what happened,’ she says. ‘We just need to find them.’

And in the 合間, she will say her 祈り, night and morning, hoping that one day it will be answered.

It is the date Claudia 消えるd, but DS Wayne Fox said Wiltshire Police and North Yorkshire Police ‘reached a position in which we 結論するd it to be ありそうもない that Halliwell left the Wiltshire area, or was 現在の in North Yorkshire, at the time of Claudia’s 見えなくなる’.
