Saved for a 雨の day: Hoard of 1,200 Roman coins 明らかにするd on building 場所/位置

Archaeologists have 攻撃する,衝突する the jackpot after 明らかにするing more than 1,200 coins buried in a Roman piggybank.

The 驚くべき/特命の/臨時の 運ぶ/漁獲高 , believed to be more than 1,700 years old, was discovered in a small grey マリファナ on a building 場所/位置 on former Army land in Colchester, Essex.

The find - あられ/賞賛するd as a 'hugely 重要な 国家の 発見' - has now been sent to the British Museum for 分析 and will 結局 be 寄付するd to the the town's museum.

Philip Crummy, director of the Colchester Archaeological 信用, said the coins, which are made of 巡査 with a thin silver 塗装, date from the third century AD.

He said: 'All the coins appear to have been put in the マリファナ at the same time and then buried.

'Interestingly many of the coins inside the マリファナ looked as they had been placed in there in little stacks.

'From this, we can visualise the owner sorting out his money in neat piles on a (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する so that he could count it 正確に before putting the coins in the マリファナ stack by stack.

'I imagine the owner was better off than the 普通の/平均(する) person, but I am not sure if he would qualify as rich.'

The historian believes the hoard was buried for 保管 during troubled times but a forgetful owner may have been unable to find it again.

Mr Crummy 追加するd: 'The burial of coins seems to have been more ありふれた in periods of 不安 or 不確定.

'The 270s was a difficult time in eastern England because of civil war in the Roman Empire and s erious (警察の)手入れ,急襲ing along the coast by foreign peoples.'

The coins will be 寄付するd to Colchester Museum by developer Taylor Wimpey, which has 権利s to the find under treasure trove 法律s.

Company managing director Simon Brown said: 'This amazing collection of Roman coins is a hugely 重要な 国家の 発見 which brings even more life and colour to Colchester's rich and fascinating history.

'The hoard was discovered during the course of 決まりきった仕事 archaeological 調査する work at the former Hyderabad and Meeanee 兵舎 場所/位置 in March, and さもなければ might have lain undiscovered for many years to come.'
