Iraqi 民兵s '解雇する/砲火/射撃 on Basra 非軍事のs'

Basra is "明確に nowhere 近づく" under 連合した 軍隊s' 支配(する)/統制する, British army officers 認める today as they (人命などを)奪う,主張するd Iraqi 民兵 had 解雇する/砲火/射撃d on 非軍事のs 逃げるing the city.

Around 2,000 people were 発射 at by Iraqi 議会のs as the 砂漠 ネズミs returned 解雇する/砲火/射撃 and 扱う/治療するd the 負傷させるd, it was 申し立てられた/疑わしい.

"We are trying to save the people, return 解雇する/砲火/射撃 and 救助(する) 非軍事のs," British 中尉/大尉/警部補 陸軍大佐 Ronnie McCourt said.

援助(する) problems

For the past five days Basra has been encircled by British 軍隊/機動隊s and 広報担当者 陸軍大佐 Chris Vernon said the fighting had made it impossible to 伸び(る) 接近 to the area.

"Basra (is) 明確に nowhere 近づく yet in our 手渡すs and we have no way at the moment of getting 人道的な 援助(する) into Basra," he said.

"But 明確に, as we begin to pressurise Basra and to begin to 支配する it 軍事的に... - nothing can move in or out - we should move に向かって the day we can get 人道的な 援助(する) into Basra."

The 陸軍大佐 said there had been 報告(する)/憶測s in 最近の days of 重要な numbers of Iraqi 非軍事のs coming out of Basra on a daily basis to get food 援助(する) from points outside the city and then returning.

This appeared to be the 事例/患者 again today, but Iraqi 議会の 軍隊s had opened 解雇する/砲火/射撃 on them to stop them leaving, he said.

"Our 解釈/通訳 of this is here perhaps are the first pieces of 証拠 of Iraqi people trying to break 解放する/自由な from the Baath party 政権 and the 民兵," Col Vernon said.

"And 明確に the 民兵 don't want that. They want to keep their 全住民 in there, and they 解雇する/砲火/射撃d on them to 軍隊 them 支援する in."

No 入ること/参加(者) into city

The 陸軍大佐 said fighting had taken place on the 郊外s of the city but 連合した 軍隊/機動隊s had not gone into the city centre "for worry of collateral 損失".

He said: "The 重要な to Basra is to eradicate the Baath Party 支配(する)/統制する and the 不規律な 軍隊s operating under their 支配(する)/統制する there."

By doing so, the "hearts an d minds" 救済 操作/手術 could then be put in place for the 非軍事の people on the ground.

"Not 平易な, no time lines on it, but that's what we are working に向かって," he said.

Enough 軍隊/機動隊s to 対処する

The 陸軍大佐 said he was 確信して they had enough British 軍隊/機動隊s based in southern Iraq to 対処する with the 仕事.

"We have got a 完全にする 分割, 16 旅団s up 安全な・保証するing the Rumaila oilfields, seven 旅団s engaged west of Basra and 3 特殊部隊員 旅団 直す/買収する,八百長をするing Basra from the south - やめる enough 軍隊/機動隊s for that," he said.

Col Vernon 拒絶するd (人命などを)奪う,主張するs that the 連合した 軍隊s had been unprepared for the strength of the 抵抗 and (人命などを)奪う,主張するd the Iraqi army had

been "平易な" to 打ち勝つ.

He said: "Where we come across the Iraqi army, our 査定/評価 is they are 敗北・負かすd very, very easily, 慣例的に.

"Whether it is from Nasiriyah, south of Basra and into the Basra 州 here... we make the point that an Iraqi army 大隊 and 大隊 of 戦車/タンクs was 破壊するd in a very 平易な 活動/戦闘 by the Scots Dragoon Guards."

But the 陸軍大佐 譲歩するd that the more 慣習に捕らわれない 軍隊s had had an 衝撃: "It is probably true to say its level of 解決する and numbers might have 心配するd our 初期の 査定/評価s."

Saddam's 軍隊/機動隊s 'hidden' in Basra

Col Vernon said the Iraqi people still needed to be 納得させるd that if they rebelled against Saddam, the 連合 軍隊s would 確実にする the leader would 落ちる.

一方/合間 British 兵士s just outside Basra have been told that Iraqi 戦車/タンクs are hidden "in the shop windows and under car parks" in the city.

軍隊/機動隊s at 検問所s to the south of the city said they had seen only a handful of 難民s leaving, and they were searched for 武器s and 軍の paraphernalia.

The 兵士s painted a grim picture of the 軍の 軍隊s 集まりd in the city.

"非軍事のs tell us that the 民兵 have piled into Basra," said Sergeant Duane Gardner, of the Queen's 王室の Lancers.

"All their 道具, their army - app arently the 戦車/タンクs are hidden in the shop windows and under car parks."

同僚 Corporal Tony Uprichard said: "We spoke to one English student who said the Iraqis were behind us and 手配中の,お尋ね者 him (Saddam Hussein) out.

"He said the 正規の/正選手 army had gone north but the 民兵 were in Basra."

The Fedayeen - the 黒人/ボイコット hooded 闘士,戦闘機s most loyal to Saddam - are known to be active in the city, the scene of 猛烈な/残忍な fighting since the 突発/発生 of war.
