Professor 強硬派ing in 強襲,強姦 調査(する)

by NATALIE CLARKE, Daily Mail

Stephen 強硬派ing is in hospital today under 一連の会議、交渉/完成する-the-clock "監視". His family 恐れる he is 存在 的d by a deranged 攻撃者 who might try to 破壊行為 the 器具/備品 and 薬/医学s that are keeping him alive.

Professor 強硬派ing, the world's greatest living scientist, has 肺炎 and has been in hospital since before Christmas.

Yet it is not the 気管支の 感染, so serious in a 62-year-old man of such physical frailty, that is the 長,指導者 原因(となる) of the terrors his family live with from day to day.

It is that the person 意図 on doing him grievous 害(を与える) - and who appears to have 後継するd in doing so already on 非常に/多数の occasions - will go one step too far if not stopped soon.

"We are 絶対 terrified as to what will happen next," says a family friend. "Everyone is 荒廃させるd - 特に Stephen's children."

For more than three years, Professor 強硬派ing, who is paralysed as a result of モーター neurone 病気 and can speak only through a computerised 発言する/表明する box, has been the 犠牲者 of a 乱すing 目録 of "事故s".

A&E visits

In November 2000, the police 開始する,打ち上げるd an 調査 after 強硬派ing made a number of visits to the 事故 and 緊急 department at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge - where he is 現在/一般に 存在 扱う/治療するd for 肺炎 - with a variety of 傷害s he was unwilling to explain.

Once there was a broken arm; another time he turned up with a broken wrist; on a separate occasion the doctors were shocked to see him with a large gash on his 直面する; he also arrived with 黒人/ボイコット 注目する,もくろむs and a torn lip.

But にもかかわらず 存在 繰り返して asked, he 辞退するd to divulge 正確に/まさに how the 傷害s had come about, except to say that on one occasion he had fallen out of his 車椅子.

The police spoke to 強硬派ing's 同僚s at Cambridge University and staff at Addenbrooke's Hospital. They also wrote to him and left phone messages asking if he 要求するd their help, but were met with silence.

As a result, they had no 選択 but to 減少(する) their 調査. But they now want to question his second wife.

The interview would be part of a new 調査 開始する,打ち上げるd into yet more 傷害s 支えるd by Professor 強硬派ing.

'Form of 拷問'

His family became worried 支援する in the summer after a 報告(する)/憶測 reached them that nursing staff had discovered the professor, faint and listless, in his 車椅子 in the garden of his 高級な Cambridge home on the hottest day of the year. He had 苦しむd 厳しい heatstroke and sunburn.

One nurse said he had been 支配するd to a form of "拷問". His most 最近の 傷害s have been knocks and bruises.

Professor 強硬派ing's health has again failed him, and although friends say he is doing "remarkably 井戸/弁護士席" - Addenbrooke's said yesterday he was "stable" - they remain 猛烈に worried about his safety.

同僚s of the professor are also 関心d for him, 説 his care 政権 - paid for out of Cambridge University 基金s - has changed 劇的な over the past few years.

"Recently, instead of trained nurses, carers with いっそう少なく 医療の 専門的知識 have been 雇うd," says a source. "I know some of Stephen's friends are わずかに 関心d about this. They seem to think he is not getting as good care as he used to."

Nurses and carers who work for the Hawkings have to 調印する a confidentiality 協定, so the goings-on behind the 塀で囲むs of the family home have an aura of secrecy about them. There used to be almost a dozen nurses caring for Professor 強硬派ing; now it is believed there are far より小数の.

騒然とした 私的な life

Who, then, is the 悪党/犯人? The 私的な life of Professor 強硬派ing has, in 最近の years, been 騒然とした. Indeed, the 詳細(に述べる)s were 明らかにする/漏らすd in a 調書をとる/予約する, Music To Move The 星/主役にするs, written by his former wife Jane, after she had been supplan ted by the woman who was to become his second wife, Elaine.

強硬派ing was 22 and a cosmology 研究 student, while Jane was 20 and 熟考する/考慮するing French and Spanish, when they 結婚する in 1964. They were married for 26 years until 強硬派ing told his wife he was leaving her for his then nurse, Elaine Mason.

So just what is going on? And why is Oxford-educated Professor 強硬派ing, author of the international bestseller A 簡潔な/要約する History Of Time and Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, so 決定するd not to betray the 身元 of his 攻撃者?

Professor 強硬派ing's family are 納得させるd he is the 犠牲者 of 強襲,強姦, and believe his 加害者 may be 苦しむing from Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy - a 条件 where 苦しんでいる人s 害(を与える) others to draw attention to themselves.

They also believe it is probably someone の近くに to him, but are "権力のない" to do anything because Professor 強硬派ing has been, up to now, resolute in his 拒絶 to identify his 攻撃者.

"The 強襲,強姦s just keep on happening and the family do not know if they will ever end," says a family friend.

"The family has 苦しむd 猛烈に. They'd get calls 説 this has happened and that has happened, referring to Stephen 存在 負傷させるd, and asking them to do something. But their 手渡すs are tied. The police have been told, but they cannot do anything because he will not make a (民事の)告訴. The family are 全く 罠にかける."

At the mercy of someone

So why doesn't Professor 強硬派ing 明らかにする/漏らす the truth? Friends believe he does not want to because he is a "proud and stubborn man".

As things stand, he continues to appear to be at the mercy of someone who seemingly takes 楽しみ in 害(を与える)ing a frail, utterly defenceless, 手足を不自由にする/(物事を)損なうd man. And nobody can do a thing about it.

It is astonishing that someone as 著名な and high-profile as Professor 強硬派ing, who 熟考する/考慮するd physics at University College, Oxford, should be so 脅すd.

He has written several bestselling 調書をとる/予約するs and countless 科学の papers. He has 12 名誉として与えられる degrees, was awarded the CBE in 1982 and is the 受取人 of many other awards, メダルs and prizes.

にもかかわらず his disability, he still travels the world giving lectures. He is much 祝日,祝うd wherever he goes and was even 招待するd to the White House by former 大統領 法案 Clinton

Elaine, 述べるd as a church-going mother-of-two and who loves the attention the professor attracts, has never been 特に popular with the 強硬派ing family - まず第一に/本来 his former wife Jane, the mother of his three children, Robert, Lucy and Tim.

Elaine was 初めは the cosmologist's nurse and joined the staff after 強硬派ing had a tracheotomy 操作/手術 in 1985 - the result of a previous 肺炎 感染 which nearly killed him - which left him unable to breathe unaided and in need of 一連の会議、交渉/完成する-the-clock care.

It was Elaine's former husband, engineer David Mason, who made the computer-生成するd 発言する/表明する box which created the robot-like 声の トン for which the scientist is now famous.

'Mesmeric 持つ/拘留する'

From the start, say friends, she 始める,決める out to ingratiate herself with him, and over a period of time the family noticed the mesmeric 持つ/拘留する the nurse was beginning to 発揮する over her 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金, and felt 深く,強烈に uneasy.

によれば one family friend who 証言,証人/目撃するd Elaine's interaction with the professor: "She would worship the ground beneath his feet, but his family were not welcome.

"She brainwashed him to think that she was the only person who could かもしれない look after him. She was also really jealous of his children and the の近くに 関係 that they have with him."

事柄s were 複雑にするd by his wife of 26 years having an 事件/事情/状勢 - with 強硬派ing's tacit 是認, she says - with choirmaster Jonathan Hellyer Jones, whom she had befriended in 1977 after his young wife died from leukaemia.

There was the 追加するd 不快 of hav ing their family travails played out in the public 注目する,もくろむ に引き続いて the phenomenal success of A 簡潔な/要約する History Of Time after its 出版(物) in 1988.

Showed devotion

Elaine began …を伴ってing Professor 強硬派ing on trips abroad, showing a devotion which made Jane feel "small, apologetic and 不十分な".

Elaine's feelings に向かって her 競争相手 were contemptuous. Once, when Jane was ill with shingles, she says she heard someone ask where she was and Elaine replied: "Oh, she's lying in bed... shamming."

Another time Elaine asked Jane why she did not give up teaching and (問題を)取り上げる nursing instead - 明らかに an 試みる/企てる to 土台を崩す her.

Jane felt ますます 押し進めるd out by her 競争相手. There was one time, によれば a friend, when she phoned her husband and Elaine answered and 需要・要求するd to know why she was calling. "Elaine said to her: 'This is my personal time with Stephen. What are you doing?' Can you imagine how that made Jane feel?"

After several years of 騒動 for all 関心d, in 1990 Professor 強硬派ing told his wife he was leaving her for Elaine. They married five years later, and Jane married Hellyer Jones in 1997.

Mysterious 傷害s

Since his marriage to his former nurse, the mysterious 傷害s have started appearing. His most 最近の ones, which have again 誘発するd the police to try to unravel the mystery, have been 削減(する)s and bruises which have not 要求するd hospital 治療.

One 出来事/事件, two years ago, was 特に 半端物 and had the most serious 影響. It was the run-up to Professor 強硬派ing's 60th birthday and the scientist was looking 今後 to joining hundreds of friends at a party to celebrate the event, a particular 業績/成就 for someone who was given only a few years to live in his 20s after 存在 診断するd with モーター neurone 病気.

Two weeks before the party, however, his high-tech 車椅子 明らかに 衝突,墜落d into a 塀で囲む. His 卒業生(する) assistant, Neel Shearer exp lained: "He was late for a 会合 and running on 強硬派ing time, as ever."

A friend of the 強硬派ing family has a rather different theory: "I think that he was probably tipped out of his 車椅子."

Professor 強硬派ing 苦しむd a fractured hip and had to be taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital by 救急車. Because he had had a tracheotomy and had poor respiration, he was unable to have a 従来の anaesthetic.

Instead, he underwent the 外科 to pin his hip with a 苦痛-殺人,大当り epidural 注射 in his spine. He was conscious throughout the 操作/手術 and joked later to friends: "It was like 審理,公聴会 a 黒人/ボイコット and Decker 演習."

At his party, Professor 強硬派ing laughed off the 出来事/事件, 説 he had had "an argument with a 塀で囲む" and "the 塀で囲む won". にもかかわらず, he 実行するd a lifelong ambition by taking a flight in a hot 空気/公表する balloon 特に designed to 融通する his 車椅子 - a birthday 現在の from his wife. The balloon is now up for sale.

It was yet another "事故" which made 強硬派ing's family even more jittery about his safety.

関心d calls from friends

にもかかわらず all these alarming 事故s, Professor 強硬派ing's mind remained かみそり-sharp and his career continued to 繁栄する. Six months after the 操作/手術 on his hip, he was awarded the £10,000 Aventis Prize for Science 調書をとる/予約するs - 述べるd as "science's Booker Prize" - for The Universe In A Nutshell.

The family have had calls from 関心d friends "every month or so". "Whenever they come, the family think: 'Oh no, not again,'" says a source.

Yesterday, Professor 強硬派ing's former wife Jane, 59, would only say: "I am very worried for Stephen and I have been for a very long time. I'm also very worried for my children because this has had such a 破滅的な 影響 on them and is 廃虚ing their lives."

Police 調査

一方/合間, her 後継者, looking grim-直面するd, arrived at Addenbrooke's Hospital carrying a 捕らえる、獲得する ful of 準備/条項s from Waitrose - 推定では goodies for her husband.

Earlier, asked about 強硬派ing's health, she had said: "He's 安全な and 井戸/弁護士席 in hospital, where he's 苦しむing from 肺炎. He is better than he was." Asked whether she knew anything about the police 調査, she 簡単に said "No" and 拒絶する/低下するd to comment その上の.

A team of 探偵,刑事s led by 探偵,刑事 Superintendent Michael Campbell of Cambridgeshire Police has spoken to many of the nurses who care for Professor 強硬派ing, but a 広報担当者 辞退するd to say whether anyone else, 含むing his wife, has yet been interviewed.

The police were hoping to talk to her husband before Christmas but then he was 認める to hospital. All a police 広報担当者 would 確認する is that they are "調査/捜査するing an 主張 of 強襲,強姦 on a 62-year-old Cambridge man".

Dr 強硬派ing remains in his hospital bed, no 疑問 anxious to get home. The 残り/休憩(する) of his family, 猛烈に fearful for his safety, can only を待つ that time with dread.
