Her honeyed 発言する／表明する bewitched 無線で通信する 4 listeners for １０年間s. Now, newsreader Charlotte Green has written a gloriously entertaining memoir 明らかにする／漏らすing what really went on behind the microphone. On Saturday, in our first 抽出する, she told of the on-空気／公表する gaffes that left Britain giggling. Today, she recounts her 時折の squalls with the shipping 予測（する） . . .

When I first began working as an announcer for 無線で通信する 4, I experienced all the usual 苦悩 dreams that occur when you start doing something new.

In one 特に vivid nightmare, all my teeth would 落ちる out and tinkle daintily の上に the （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する as I be gan to read. I would then be unable to make any sound other than a whistle, much to the amusement of さまざまな shadowy 人物／姿／数字s lurking at the 辛勝する／優位s of my consciousness.

Variations on a 主題 were an 無（不）能 to find the 権利 studio in time, or a script where the pages were forever out of order. Fortunately, these horrors receded as I settled into my work as part of the 連続 team: 発表するing 近づいている programmes, reading the news and, most memorably in the opinion of many listeners, 配達するing the Shipping 予測（する）.

People have always associated me with this haunting, five-minute recitation of 天候 条件s in every sea area around the UK coastline. There are さまざまな 公式発表s throughout the day depending on which frequency you are listening on, but my favourite time for reading the ‘ships’, as we called it, was すぐに after the midnight news.

At that time of the evening, the 連続 studio had a womb-like 質 to it, 特に when I turned off the 厳しい 総計費 lights and had just one スポットライト 焦点（を合わせる）d on the script. It felt intimate and 私的な and I always 目的（とする）d to read 明確に and distinctly and at a 手段d pace to enable sailors on fishing boats, wallowing in 深い angry seas, to 令状 it 負かす／撃墜する.

I 許すd my imagination to roam 解放する／自由な. If the 強風 警告s were 厳しい, I had an image in my mind of small, 比較して frail トロール船s 存在 投げ上げる／ボディチェックするd about on 広大な indifferent waves in the pitch-黒人／ボイコット, icy 冷淡な of a wint er’s night.

I would imagine fishermen, 着せる／賦与するs and hair stiff with salt, 運ぶ／漁獲高ing themselves up a steeply angled deck with the 肌 of their 手渡すs and 直面するs flayed by a biting, unforgiving 勝利，勝つd. It was an evocative image of ‘those in 危険，危なくする on the sea’ and my affinity with the Shipping 予測（する） had much to do with my own love of the ocean.

I have spent most of my life in London, but in my first year at the University of Kent I stayed in digs in Whitstable and I still feel a strong 勧める to return to the coast as often as I can. Something 深い within me feels the need to be 近づく water, watching the ebb and flow of the tide. I love the sight and sound of 抱擁する 続けざまに猛撃するing waves and can happily sit for hours on the 激しく揺するs, watching as they build endlessly before 衝突，墜落ing in an exciting 爆発 of frothing 泡，激怒すること on the beach.?

The 指名するs of the sea areas had their own special beauty and the 予測（する） its own 内部の rhythms and cadences. It is the nearest I ever （機の）カム to reciting poetry on 空気／公表する, but I was also 関心d with the mundane reality of reading it to time and not talking over 無線で通信する 4’s hourly time ‘pips’. Their tyranny ぼんやり現れるd large, and it was a 事柄 of professional pride never to 衝突，墜落 them.

I soon began to get the hang of it. And the Shipping 予測（する） was one of the 支配するs I received the most letters about, although not all of them were complimentary. One reader （刑事）被告 me of mispronouncing the word ‘shipping’ ― putting ‘tt’ where ‘pp’ should have been. He even 脅すd to 令状 to the 監査役 of 無線で通信する 4 in disgust at my use of bad language.

Other communications were 平等に bewildering, 含むing a sheaf of A4 pages covered in mathematical 決まり文句／製法. There was no covering 公式文書，認める, so I had no idea who had sent them or why.

My fellow announcer Brian Perkins received 類似の gems in the 地位，任命する and we used to joke about what the 計算／見積りs meant and whether Professor Stephen 強硬派ing had sent them.

Another 同僚 was 地位，任命するd a cricket ball by an admirer, and bizarrely it was covered in white paint. When she sent it 支援する with a very polite 公式文書，認める 説 she didn’t really have any need for it, she received a very dusty 返答.

For some 推論する／理由, my pigeon-穴を開ける was 十分な of biblical tracts with many an exhortation to repent of my sins. On one occasion the 宗教的な 詩（を作る）s were …を伴ってd by a 小冊子 encouraging the reader to eat more roughage and pass softer 動議s.

On the whole, however, it seemed that the 無線で通信する 4 audience liked my approach and, from the time I started reading the Shipping 予測（する） in 1985, I built up such a loyal に引き続いて that I was 愛称d ‘Charlotte the fisherman’s friend’ by the late Simon Hoggart, who I 大いに enjoyed working with on 無線で通信する 4’s The News 質問（する）.

People often gave me handkerchiefs, 襲う，襲って強奪するs and tea-towels printed with a 地図／計画する of the UK and the sea areas. I used to やめる like receiving these, but after the first 30 or so they rather lost their 控訴，上告.

いつかs listeners even asked for publicity photographs of me, although one request was not やめる what it seemed. From innocuous begi nnings, it 速く descended into an 調査 into my bra size and whether I had a photo showing me in a wet T-shirt.

裁判官ing from the somewhat spidery 令状ing and the 演説（する）／住所 at the 最高の，を越す of the letter ― a 居住の home for the 年輩の ― this was 明確に a man 決定するd to 激怒（する） against the dying of the light.

In a 類似の vein, I also got many St Valentine’s Day cards from sailors and they were rarely romantic in 意向. What they 示唆するd is unprintable, but let’s just say that it was 正確に／まさに the 肉親，親類d of bawdy innuendo you might 推定する／予想する from men of the sea.?

Not that our audience consisted only of sailors. A 広大な／多数の／重要な many other people listened to the Shipping 予測（する） and took 楽しみ in it にもかかわらず having no 関係 with the sea どれでも. They 簡単に loved listening to the rhythm and musicality of the 予測（する）, revelling in phrases such as ‘precipitation within sight’.

I built up such a loyal に引き続いて that I was 愛称d ‘Charlotte the fisherman’s friend’ by the late Simon Hoggart (権利 with Alan Coren), who I 大いに enjoyed working with on 無線で通信する 4’s The News 質問（する）

One listener 特に 奮起させるd by the ‘ships’ was photographer 示す 力／強力にする, who travelled to all 31 sea areas and 逮捕（する）d the essence of each in 劇の 黒人／ボイコット-and-white images. I met him at an 展示 of his work in Brighton, and one image 特に held my attention.

It was of Rockall, which lies to the north-west of Ireland. I had said the 指名する so many times and it was every bit as 荒涼とした, remote and 厳しい as I had imagined, a large 黒人／ボイコット 激しく揺する 半分-潜水するd by a white, angry boiling sea. And under it was a very familiar-sounding caption: ‘Westerly 7 to 厳しい 強風 9, occasionally 嵐／襲撃する 10, veering north-westerly. にわか雨s. 穏健な or Good.’

After the 展示, 示す kindly sent me a 調書をとる／予約する of the photographs and it’s something I’ll always treasure because for me, as for so many listeners, the Shipping 予測（する） has always been about far more than just the 気象の （警察などへの）密告，告訴（状） it 伝えるs, important though that is.

Bizarrely, some people still think I read it out on 空気／公表する now, even though I gave it up some years ago to concentrate on newsreading. Since then I have left the BBC altogether ― retiring in January last year. That was a 決定／判定勝ち（する） taken for several 推論する／理由s, principally a 願望（する） to start もう一度 and refresh myself professionally.

Though tinged with sadness, leaving was remarkably 平易な, and many other 適切な時期s have now come my way, 含むing my work as a presenter for Classic FM. I enjoy the relaxed, friendly atmosphere there and also the leisurely schedule ― such a change from the relentless 転換 patterns at the BBC.

At the age of 58, I have done my 株 of anti-social hours, all those 早期に starts and late finishes, but they were a price 価値（がある） 支払う／賃金ing for the honour of becoming associated with an 会・原則 like the Shipping 予測（する）.

After the late night ships I always took particular care to 調印する off with a very personal message, wishing listeners a 安全な and 平和的な night. It wasn’t sentimental or cloying ― both anathema to me ― but it resonated with the audience.

Over the years, I received many letters from people who were lonely, either through bereavement or because they were housebound and didn’t see many people. For them the 無線で通信する was a lifeline, the only 発言する／表明する they would hear throughout the day and evening.

That simple wish made them feel 含むd and cared for and it struc k me 強制的に that 無線で通信する 4 供給するd a 決定的な lifeline for those struggling with 孤立／分離 and 欠如（する） of human 接触する.

I consider those few words just before closedown, with just me and a microphone, as some of the most important I ever broadcast.
