Not so happily ever after: Fairytales that lay undiscovered for 150 years tell stories of wicked step-fathers, 脅すd young princes and witch-殺すing damsels

  • 井戸/弁護士席-known fairytales feature 攻撃を受けやすい women and dragon-殺すing men
  • But new collection tells stories of ruthless princesses and hapless princes
  • It was 収集するd in Germany in 1880s - same time as the Brothers Grimm

Most fairytales are 侵略(する)/超過(する) with wicked witches, entrapped princesses and dashing young princes.

But a new collection 申し込む/申し出s a different take on the classics - without the Happily Ever After.

The stories were 収集するd by German historian Franz Xaver 出身の Sch?nwerth?in the 1880s - around the same time as the Brothers Grimm folk tales - from across the Bavarian 地域 of Oberpfalz.

The stories will be published in a new Penguin edition called The Turnip Princess

And now the collection, which lay undiscovered in a 地元の 古記録 for 150 years, is 始める,決める to be published in English for the first time, the 後見人 報告(する)/憶測s.

While the 井戸/弁護士席-known Grimm fairytales often feature a 攻撃を受けやすい princess and dragon-殺すing hero, Sch?nwerth 逆転するs their 役割s - 申し込む/申し出ing readers powerful 女性(の) and 攻撃を受けやすい male characters.

In Sch?nwerth's fantastical 見解/翻訳/版 Cinderella, for example, the ヘロイン uses her golden - not glass - slippers to 救助(する) her lover from beyond the moon.

But his work, which also 含むs untold tales such as The Stupid Wife and The Girl And The Cow, failed to attract the same attention as that of the Brothers Grimm and faded into obscurity.

Many of the tales were told to him by 小作農民s, labourers and servants, after 存在 passed 負かす/撃墜する through 世代s by word-of-mouth.

He 完全にするd a 調書をとる/予約する on his findings called Aus der Oberpfalz ? Sitten und Sagen, which (機の)カム out in three 容積/容量s. They 含むd the fairy tales and historical background on them.

In 1885, Jacob Grimm said this about him: 'Nowhere in the whole of Germany is anyone collecting [folklore] so 正確に, 完全に and with such a 極度の慎重さを要する ear.'?

But Sch?nwerth's 容積/容量s never 伸び(る)d prominence and were mostly forgotten.

It was only when Erika Eichenseer, 80, was 精査するing through Sch?nwerth's work in an 古記録 in Regensburg that his work re-現れるd into the public domain.?

Ms Eichenseer, a retired teacher who now 作品 as a cultural curator, moved to have the tales translated English and they will be published in a new Penguin 版 called The Turnip Princess.

One story tells of a maiden who escapes a witch by transforming herself into a pond. The witch then lies on her stomach and drinks all the water, swallowing the young girl.

But once she has drunk the pond, the girl uses a knife to 削減(する) her way out of the witch.

In another, a woman gives her 所持品 to the poor but 回復するs her wealth after she 脅すs off a group of thieves.?

There are also more 井戸/弁護士席-known but 地元の examples of tales such as Cinderella and Rumpelstiltskin.

Ms Eichenseer says the fairytales were invented for people of all ages.

Speaking about the 調書をとる/予約するs in 2012, she said: 'Their main 目的 was to help young adults on their path to adulthood, showing them that dangers and challenges can be 打ち勝つ through virtue, prudence and courage.'??
