Elizabeth Webber Harris is the only woman to ever be 'awarded' the Victoria Cross
On the Indian frontline in 1869, Elizabeth Webber Harris 危険d her life to nurse 兵士s 攻撃する，衝突する by a deadly コレラ 突発／発生 支援する to health.

Even with her own life in danger, Mrs Harris did not stop her 成果／努力s to help the men （警官の）巡回区域，受持ち区域 the 病気.
One night she was attacked by two tribesmen who 掴むd her horse in an 出来事/事件 she 述べるd as ‘alarming’. When the 連隊 finally returned to Peshawar, she said: ‘I was 扱う／治療するd as a ヘロイン’.

In June 1921 a magazine article said: ‘Throughout their trying time in the 孤立／分離 （軍の）野営地，陣営 Mrs Harris remained with the 連隊 and it was 大部分は 借りがあるing to her indefatigable exertions that the losses of the 連隊 were not infinitely heavier than they were.’
The 104th officers felt Mrs Harris had lived up to the traditions of the Victoria Cross and in 1869 she was awarded with the 名誉として与えられる メダル.
A letter to the Times 明言する／公表するd: ‘It is said that it was 示唆するd to Queen Victoria that Mrs Webber Harris might be given the Victoria Cross, but this was, of course, not possible, so the gold replica was made and 現在のd to her instead.’
Mrs Harris later wrote: ‘It is a most beautiful ornament, and will always be my most 心にいだくd 所有／入手.’
She died in London in 1917. Her メダル will be 陳列する，発揮するd at the IWM from next month in 祝賀 of International Women’s Day, which was held on Sunday.
