?It was the moment Jay Leno bitch-slapped James Corden like the teacher in Whiplash that first made me laugh out loud.

Closely followed by the moment the same Jay Leno then 積極性 placed a 黒人／ボイコット hood over Corden’s 長，率いる, 注ぐd ‘石油’ over it ? 無 Dark Thirty style ? and furiously 需要・要求するd he tell a funny joke, or 危険 切迫した death.

It was one of the funniest sketches I’ve seen on a late night talk show in years. And the studio audience, of whom I was a member at the taping in Los Angeles last night ? agreed, 爆発するing into 集まり fits of laughter.

Something, it’s important to 公式文書，認める, that they continued to do throughout the show.

James Corden's American debut starts with a hilarious sketch 伴う／関わるing Jay Leno. The studio audience loved that joke and laughed uproariously throughout the 残り／休憩（する） of the show

Unequivocally, yes, and yes.

At this point, I should 宣言する that James and I have been friends for the past eight years.

I think he’s a wonderfully talented young man. He can sing, 行為／法令／行動する, 令状, tell jokes, dance (almost as 不正に as me), and above all, entertain.

But what he’s never done before is host a talk show, or even, with one of two exceptions, interview people.

So this 代表するs his biggest career challenge to date, and as he’s been telling us all very 公然と since he got the 職業: ‘It’s very likely to be a 完全にする and utter 大災害!’

If he’s 存在 裁判官d 純粋に as an interviewer, then he’s 権利 to 限界 instant 期待s.

In his direct 交流s last night with guests Mila Kunis and Tom Hanks, he was a bit nervy and stuttery, clutched his question cards like they were rosary beads, and looked わずかに alarmed by the whole experience.

But I could tell he was nervous, and those 神経s will 静める quickly as he gets into his groove.

And にもかかわらず his ぎこちない technique, he did prise out a 本物の scoop from Mila that she IS married to Ashton Kutcher, which made headlines today.

Anyway, it won’t be the interviews that decide Corden’s 運命／宿命. He’s not been 雇うd to be the next David 霜.

He’s been 雇うd to give us all a laugh before we go to bed.

Or as he quipped last night: ‘As you literally 落ちる asleep.’

He even keeps a fully 在庫／株d 妨げる／法廷，弁護士業 so the guests get loose - Tom Hanks partook of some beer himself - and the whole atmosphere is cheery and enjoyable

Corden’s 開始 演説（する）／住所 to the audience wasn’t the 伝統的な joke-fuelled topical monologue （軍隊を）展開する，配備するd by all his late night 競争相手s.

It was more an amusing introductory explanation of who he is, where he comes from, how much he loves his wife and two little kids, and why nobody in the world is more surprised than him that he landed such a big gig.

But he did it in such an endearing, humble, charming and 深く心に感じた manner that he soon had the audience eating out of the palm of his 手渡す.

特に when he paid 尊敬の印 to his parents - who had flown in from Britain to watch his debut from the audience? and 敏速に choked up with 涙／ほころびs.

It was a very 効果的な, very human start. One that 誘発するd many ‘oohs’ and ‘aaahhs’ from the （人が）群がる.

And very different from his 前任者 Craig Ferguson, who I 本人自身で never liked or watched very much.

Ferguson’s a snarky, much older Scot who exuded the わずかに 緊張した, irritable 空気／公表する of many 回復するing アル中患者s.

His ratings dropped from 2 million to 1.3 million during his ten-year 任期, so it’s th e perfect time for a change.

Corden is younger, fresher, indisputably far more fun, and the whole feel of the show 反映するs that.

The 始める，決める is bigger, glossier and more expensive than Ferguson’s looked.

The audience, far bigger than Ferguson’s, was young, buzzy and enthusiastic.

Corden’s also brought in a very good, lively house 禁止（する）d ? Ferguson didn’t have one at all - led by acclaimed musician and comedian Reggie ワットs, who will 行為／法令／行動する as the host’s 正規の／正選手 sidekick.

Their interaction tonight was a bit too scripted and stilted, but has plenty of 約束.

There’s also a fully-在庫／株d 妨げる／法廷，弁護士業 to the 味方する of the 行う／開催する／段階, staffed by handsome men and …に出席するd by glamorous young ladies sitting on stools.

Hanks was thrilled - 繰り返して 手渡す-signalling requests for a beer.

The whole experience is designed, as Corden put it, to make you ‘feel warm and have a 広大な／多数の／重要な time’.

It 作品 ? the atmosphere was cheery and enjoyable.

Corden’s breaking with U.S. talk show tradition by having all his guests come out at once, walking from the 支援する of the studio 権利 through the audience. It created 穏やかな frenzy last night as Ms Kunis and Mr Hanks 現れるd through a curtain, glad-手渡すing 無作為の strangers.

Corden, a friend, has been 雇うd to make America laugh. His show 雇うs a technique that 作品 on many English shows - all the celebrities come out at the beginning and sit on the couch together at once

Though Mila moaned that she nearly つまずくd on the steps.

‘What will you do if Beyonce wants to come 負かす／撃墜する those stairs in her high heels?’ asked Hanks.

‘If Beyonce wants to come on the show, I’ll carry her in myself!’ Corden retorted, to a roar.

I liked the guests 株ing the same sofa. That 判型 already 作品 井戸／弁護士席 on さまざまな talk shows in England, and it 許すs the 星／主役にするs to all 誘発する off each other.

But I’m not as 納得させるd by the way Corden pulls up his 議長，司会を務める to sit 権利 next to the guests, rather than talk to them from behind his desk.

The idea is to make it all feel more intimate, but on first showing, it had almost the opposite 影響 of feeling TOO の近くに, and a little intimidatory.

What did work, and spectacularly 井戸／弁護士席, were the sketches.

Simon Cowell, Chris 激しく揺する, Eddie Redmayne and myriad other celebrities are seen enraged or crying after 開始 their envelopes to find they hadn’t got the 職業.

Then, once ‘Charlie’ Corden 勝利，勝つs it by 事故, he’s seen in a desperate struggle with 星／主役にするs like Allison Janney, Shia LaBoeuf, Meryl Streep and Leno as he learns how to speak like an American, understand American humour, interview American 星／主役にするs, and make Americans laugh.

As someone who went through a very 類似の 過程 at CNN, I 設立する it 特に amusing ? but the almost 完全に American audience lapped it up, too.

It was the perfect riposte to all the cynics who assume his mere Britishness will work against him.

In another sketch, Corden 成し遂げるd an astonishingly high-octane, 早い 解雇する／砲火／射撃, 衣装-changing 行為／法令／行動する with Hanks where they 力／強力にするd through almost every movie he’s ever made.

Seeing Corden dressed up as a mermaid, a weepy Meg Ryan, an out-of-支配（する）／統制する 宇宙飛行士 and ‘Wilson’ bobbing in the ocean, was pure comedy genius. And they did it all in one take.

The show ended with Corden at a piano, singing a song he’d written about his own first show.

The audience were given little たいまつs to parade in 速度 above our 長，率いるs.

It was cheesy, a little ridiculous, and I’ve heard him sing better. But it was also very touching and made me smile.

I crept out of the studio as Corden 企て，努力，提案 a 深く心に感じた thank you to the audience for coming and got a standing ovation.

Then I walked 負かす／撃墜する a long 回廊（地帯） out the 支援する に向かって the elevators, and （機の）カム 直面する-to-直面する with the host himself, standing all alone.

‘How was I?’ he asked, 耐える-hugging me nervously.

‘Mate, as they say over here, you NAILED it!’

‘I do. Those sketches were hysterical.’

It’s been a long few months of relentless hard work for both of them.

‘Was the last song 承認する?’ James asked, brow furrowed with 緊張.

‘Yes,’ replied Ben, 堅固に.

That’s all any talent needs in that moment, 安心.

‘Now you just have to do it all over again tomorrow,’ I laughed.

‘And the next!’ he laughed 支援する.

My guess is that critics will heap equal mixe s of 賞賛する and 軽蔑（する） on James Corden this week. It’s what happens to everyone who 取って代わるs an 設立するd show.

And his ratings will end the first week lower than they start it, that always happens too, as many people tune in out of pure curiosity.

But having watched the first show, I think James Corden’s definitely got what it takes to be a big late night TV 星／主役にする in America. So long as he 避けるs the 誘惑 to 需要・要求する 銃砲規制…
