Kerry's dream in tatters

Last updated at 15:19 03 November 2004

Ever since he was a young student, John Kerry 手配中の,お尋ね者 to follow in the footsteps of his hero John F Kennedy.

It seemed every move he made - as a Vietnam war hero, a 星/主役にする lawyer, a 明言する/公表する 政治家,政治屋 and US 上院議員 - was setting the 行う/開催する/段階 for his 大統領の 企て,努力,提案.

But today, after 敗北・負かす at the 手渡すs of George Bush, John Forbes Kerry's dream of becoming the next JFK are in tatters.

Mr Kerry was born to run for the 大統領/総裁などの地位.

The 60-year-old 6ft 4in Massachusetts 上院議員 had all the 信任状. He was born into money, a war hero educated at Yale.

But his many years as a Democratic 政治家,政治屋 did not make him 決定的な.

いつかs he appeared to ponder too long on a question. いつかs his 決定/判定勝ち(する)s appeared to 否定する each other.

Terror 脅し

In the 直面する of an 現在進行中の テロリスト 脅し, and with tens of thousands of 軍隊/機動隊s 効果的に still at war in Iraq, the people of the US were not willing to take the chance.

Mr Kerry hoped that his own experiences of war would 納得させる Americans that he was ideal for the 職業 as 指揮官 in 長,指導者.

His Vietnam heroics became a central part of his (選挙などの)運動をする.

During a 戦う/戦い in Vietnam he turned the Swift Boat he 命令(する)d 直接/まっすぐに into a あられ/賞賛する of enemy 弾丸s, 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金d at the shore, beached his (手先の)技術 and 発射 dead a Viet Cong 武装した with a ロケット/急騰する 発射台.

But にもかかわらず winning a Silver 星/主役にする and Bronze 星/主役にする for bravery, and three Purple Hearts for his 戦う/戦い 負傷させるs, Mr Kerry returned from the Mekong Delta to America to lead the (選挙などの)運動をする against the war.

These are the two different 味方するs of Mr Kerry. He is thoughtful, an idealist. But when the 圧力 is on, he will come out fighting.

Born in a 軍の hospital on December 11, 1943, in Colorado, John Forbes Kerry has two children from his first marriage to Julia Thorne, and three stepchildren with his 現在の wife Teresa Heinz Kerry.

He was one of four children born to Richa rd Kerry, an American 外交官, and Rosemary Forbes Kerry, part of the 豊富な Forbes shipping 王朝.

スイスの education

Part of his childhood education was in Switzerland and his father would later be 地位,任命するd to the American 大使館 in Oslo, Norway.

Mr Kerry was never remembered as fun-loving and to this day is often 述べるd as aloof or arrogant.

As a 十代の少年少女 at St Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, he 設立するd a political club and excelled at 審議ing, ホッケー and lacrosse.

He played on teams captained by Robert Mueller, now the director of the 連邦検察局.

Mr Kerry followed the 推定する/予想するd path to Yale where he ran the Political Union. In 1966, after 卒業生(する)ing, he chose to enlist in the 海軍 and ship out to Vietnam.

にもかかわらず 存在 高度に-regarded and decorated in Vietnam, he returned to tell America that the war was a "mistake".

At the age of just 27 he caught the attention of the nation when he appeared before a 上院 委員会 and asked: "How do you ask a man to be the last man to die in Vietnam? How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?"

Mr Kerry was by now one of the leaders of Vietnam 退役軍人s Against the War and in the spring of 1971 he organised a 巨大(な) 抗議する 決起大会/結集させる in Washington.

Such was his 影響(力), he was 追跡するd by the 連邦検察局, まっただ中に 結局 unproven 恐れるs he was a 反体制者.

Political 失敗

Kerry's first foray into politics was not successful. He lost a 1972 企て,努力,提案 for 議会.

So he went to 法律 school, and in 1976 began a career as a 検察官,検事 in Middlesex 郡, Massachusetts, where he 的d organised 罪,犯罪.

In 1982, he was elected as Massachusetts 中尉/大尉/警部補 知事. And in 1984 he entered the US 上院, where he won three more 条件.

One of the 上院議員's most 著名な 業績/成就s (機の)カム in the 1990s when he worked with 共和国の/共和党の 上院議員 John McCain of Arizona to account for Americans 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)d as 行方不明の in Vietnam.

For years, the families of some of those 行方不明の in 活動/戦闘 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うd their loved ones may still be held 囚人 in Vietnam.

But Mr Kerry's 調査 結論するd there were no American PoWs, a 決定/判定勝ち(する) which 覆うd the way for 大統領 法案 Clinton to 回復する 外交関係 with the South East Asian country.

Mr Kerry's political background has not led to 排他的に 肯定的な headlines.

競争相手s 偉業/利用するd his tag as a long-standing Washington insider in a country where the seat of 力/強力にする, and the people who make their living there, are regarded with 疑惑 by many.

Mr Kerry is a thoughtful man, いつかs too thoughtful for a 政治家,政治屋 in an 時代 of soundbites.

He supported authorising the use of 軍隊 against Iraq in the second 湾 War, but has since spoken out against it.

Flip-flopper

Such moves have led 対抗者s to brand him a mind-changing "flip-flopper".

Mr Kerry's 13-year marriage to Julia Thorne ended in 1988, in what Mr Kerry called a "最高の-painful 過程", and he was 選び出す/独身 for more than a 10年間.

Then he met Teresa Heinz, 相続人 to the 巨大(な) food company, and they 結婚する in 1995.

A former 国際連合 翻訳家, she is one of America's richest women with an 概算の fortune of nearly £273 million.

Mrs Heinz Kerry is the 未亡人 of 共和国の/共和党の 上院議員 John Heinz of Pennsylvania, who died in an 空気/公表する 衝突,墜落 in 1991.

In February last year, Mr Kerry 苦しむd his worst known health 脅す when he was 診断するd with a cancerous prostate. に引き続いて 外科 he recently got the all-(疑いを)晴らす.

Whether Mr Kerry will make another run for the White House in 2008 remains to be seen. But the field of 民主党員s 推定する/予想するd to 企て,努力,提案 is already (人が)群がるd.

And whether, at 64, Mr Kerry could 直面する the 財政上の, emotional and physical 激変 of another (選挙などの)運動をする must be in 疑問.

To him and those who know him 井戸/弁護士席, John Kerry is the 大統領 who never was.
