Mohammed al-Haj was tending to the streams of 負傷させるd people inside a field hospital in Aleppo in November 2012, when a バーレル／樽 爆弾 struck the 反逆者／反逆する hide-out next door.

He escaped to Turkey in 2014 and only last month - after a year of living in a squalid 難民 （軍の）野営地，陣営 - he 達成するd his dream of reaching Germany.

Mohammed's voyage across land and sea - every step of which was chronicled by a photographer - was of an 前例のない movement of more than 600,000 難民s and migrants who have crossed land and sea to reach Europe this year.

Mohammed's 旅行 across land and sea was part of an 前例のない movement of more than 600,000 難民s and migrants who have fled war and 破壊 just as he did

Most of them dream of reaching Germany but the countries en 大勝する - struggling under the 負わせる of the biggest wave of 移住 since the Second World War - have taken 対策 to 阻止する what they 言及する to as unwanted arrivals.

Hungary 築くd a 110-mile-long 盗品故買者 across its entire 国境 with Serbia, and recently shut the crossing with Croatia - 軍隊ing tens of thousa nds of migrants to the Slovenian 国境.?

His 旅行 chronicles the 深く，強烈に personal thoughts and 恐れるs that drove him and hundreds of thousands of others to 打ち勝つ these 障害s - 納得させるd that they deserved better than a life 罠にかける as a 難民 in Turkey.

He wants to be an active member of society in Europe but most of all, Mohammed just wants his dignity 支援する, 説: 'At least in Europe, I will feel that I have 権利s.'?

Mohammed joined the 抗議するs against Syrian 大統領 Bashar al-Assad in the wake of the 'Arab Spring' in 2011 but by 2012, the country had descended into an all-out civil war which still 激怒（する）s today.

Desperate to help, he began volunteering at a field hospital where - にもかかわらず his 欠如（する） of 医療の training - he stitched gaping 負傷させるs, mopped 血-soaked 床に打ち倒すs, 除去するd 厳しいd 四肢s and tried to 慰安 the maimed and dying.

The doctors, 外科医s and nurses at the hospital became his family and at the 長，率いる of the family was the 上級の doctor, Osman al-Haj Osman, who moved his family to the hospital so he did not have to leave his 患者s.

After the November 2012 バーレル／樽 爆弾 attack, the hospital の近くにd its doors and its staff joined the 巨大（な） exodus of more than four million Syrians who left for make-転換 難民 （軍の）野営地，陣営s in Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq.

結局, Mohammed and his family left too - reaching Turkey in 2014. September 2, the day he decided to leave Turkey for 本土／大陸 Europe, was the same day the photographs of a dead Syria n boy lying 直面する 負かす／撃墜する in the sand was beamed across news websites, TV 駅／配置するs and social マスコミ 料金d across the world.

Aylan Kurdi and his family had been trying to reach Europe 経由で a rickety smugglers boat from the Turkish coast to a Greek island, just as Mohammed ーするつもりであるd to.

'What am I going to do if you too 溺死する in the sea?' Mohammed's mother sobbed.

It was not an idle 恐れる. At that time, at least 85 others trying to cross the Aegean this year had met the same 運命／宿命. In 中央の-October, that number stood at 264 - and those are the ones 当局 know about.

But every week, tens of thousands more were reaching Europe 安全に and Mohammed was 決定するd to be one of them. He left his parents £2,200 each and another £5,900 with a friend in Killis, where they had all been staying, in 事例／患者 he needed some money wired to him en 大勝する.

If Mohammed died on the 旅行, as dozens of others had, the money was to go to his parents.?

Any hope he had of a r eturn to Syria had been 消滅させるd. He was 納得させるd the 破壊 would only get worse and that, in the end, Syria was doomed to break apart, 説:?'Syria is finished for me.'?

When Germany 拒絶するd his 使用／適用 for a student ビザ in August 2014, Mohammed, whose 脚 is scarred by shrapnel he 苦しむd from a バーレル／樽 爆弾 in Aleppo, decided the time to go was now.

On September 4, he was on a bus from the northern Turkish city of Izmir 長，率いるing to the 出発 point for the smugglers' boat on the Aegean coast - just 10 miles from the Greek island of Lesbos.

The Greek coast guard had 設立する six 団体／死体s floating dead in the water on that 狭くする 10-mile stretch of water a week earlier.

Mohammed and the six Syrians he was travelling with paid £1,500 each to a Turkish smuggler. The 基準 率 was just over £800, but they paid extra for a sturdier 木造の boat.

They 始める，決める off just after 夜明け and through two hours of high waves, they loudly recited 詩（を作る）s from the Quran: 'Say, he is Allah, who is One, Allah the Eternal.'

That excitement soon turned into 失望／欲求不満 when he was 罠にかける on the tourist island with 20,000 other exhausted migrants and 難民s, who slept rough under the blistering Mediterranean sun.

The （人が）群がるs of Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans languished around Lesbos' 資本／首都 Mytilene, sleeping on sidewalks - some in テントs, others on cardboard.?

They all needed to 登録（する） and receive travel 文書s before they were 許すd to buy a ticket for a フェリー（で運ぶ） taking them to the Greek 本土／大陸 but the 当局 were 圧倒するd by the 大規模な influx of migrants.

Fights broke out の中で migrants, broken up by 暴動 police who waded in shouting, 押すing and swinging batons. Some young men talked of 攻撃するing out by 粉砕するing the ritzy cafes along Mytilene's seafront.

Desperate to get on with his 旅行, Mohammed toyed with the idea of (1)偽造する／(2)徐々に進むing travel 文書s but quickly dropped the idea. He said at the time: 'All I want is to leave this country and they aren't giving me the 文書. Why?'

One day, on September 8, a fight broke out between migrants in the 列 outside the 登録 office and the Greek 公式の／役人s inside fled.?Mohammed snapped and 決起大会／結集させるd everyone outside into a 抗議する.

'We want to leave,' the several hundred デモ参加者／実演宣伝者s 詠唱するd, marching 負かす／撃墜する the Mytilene promenade. At the 前線 was Mohammed, drenched in sweat.

'Go 支援する to Turkey!' an 年輩の Greek man shouted.?

'Solve my problem,' Mohammed replied, 'Give me my paper and I will leave.'

His 打開 （機の）カム later that afternoon. He heard that a 集まり-登録 of 難民s was 存在 held at a nearby football stadium but when he arrived, there was already a 抱擁する 列 ahead of him.

He 列d for hours until he reached a police バリケード which was letting people in one by one. Mohammed saw his chance when a woman passed through, and shouted:?'That's my mother!'

He slipped through with her and after a few more hours, he spotted another 適切な時期. When a man up ahead passed out from the heat, Mohammed 急ぐd 今後, shouting that he was 申し込む／申し出ing first 援助（する）. He 緩和するd the man's 着せる／賦与するs and helped him until 国際連合 労働者s arrived.

Mohammed then 納得させるd everyone nearby that since he helped the man, he deserved his place in line.

At 3.30am, eight hours after arriving at the stadium, Mohammed had his 文書. His comrades finally got theirs several hours later, and they bought the first 利用できる フェリー（で運ぶ） ticket: 8 p.m. on Sept. 9.

He and other migrants crammed into lounges on the lower decks of the フェリー（で運ぶ）, 長，率いるd to the port of Piraeus outside Athens. Inside the half-empty lounges, Greeks and Western tourists stretched out across the seats to sleep or sat on sofas watching television.

一方／合間, the hundreds of migrants were told to cram の上に the eighth level, a 明らかにする room with plastic 議長，司会を務めるs, but the stench was so over-力／強力にするing that Mohammed and some other 難民s took another 選択 - the open-空気／公表する upper deck. He lay under a sheet to sleep for part of the 10-hour voyage.

He said:?'Of course, this is a 肉親，親類d of 人種差別主義. They look at us Syrians as animals. I so much 悔いる that this is happening to me in a European country.'

The next day, on the bus from Athens to the Macedonian 国境, Mohammed began to relax. With the new Greek SIM card he had bought for his smartphone, he had 接近 to a world of other Syrians through WhatsApp and consta ntly 交流d （警察などへの）密告，告訴（状） about the 旅行 ahead.

He had been toying with going all the way to Britain - his English was enough to get by - but that meant somehow getting through the Channel tunnel.

Germany was his 未来. He didn't speak German, but he knew dozens of Syrians there, 含むing Dr. Osman, from the Aleppo hospital, who has been staying in the 明言する／公表する of Saarland for a year.

He knew he would have to 証明する himself, 説:?'Syrians work really hard. They'll 鎮圧する 激しく揺するs for a living.'

He pictured 結局 marrying a Syrian girl who has been living in Germany. She could be 自由主義の. He wouldn't care if she did not wear the イスラム教徒 headscarf. He said: 'As a Syrian, she will know the 境界s of propriety.'

After seven hours, the bus reached the Macedonian 国境 - under the heaviest rain Mohammed had ever seen. He and his comrades trudged into the 不明瞭 to slip through the fields across the 国境.

There they got a taste of the 親切 that some Europeans show まっただ中に the 大混乱. Volunteers gave the migrants 挟むs as they entered Macedonia. A quick meal, and they were on a train, 長，率いるing to Serbia.

At the Serbian 国境, the rain was still coming 負かす／撃墜する. Abdul-Rahman, the 十代の少年少女 who kept の近くに to Mohammed, looked like he was about to burst into 涙／ほころびs, he was shivering so hard.?

It was at the Serbian town of Presevo, around 10 miles from the Macedonian 国境, that Mohammed and his companions then 攻撃する，衝突する another bottleneck-turned-madhouse.

The town was teeming with with migrants and 難民s trying to get a Serbian 登録 文書, 要求するd before they could move on to the Hungarian 国境.?

Only two days after the scorching heat of Lesbos, families 密談する／（身体を）寄せ集めるd for warmth around 解雇する／砲火／射撃s in バーレル／樽s in the streets. Everything was coated in mud from the rains. Sitting の中で スーツケースs and plastic 捕らえる、獲得するs 十分な of 着せる／賦与するs, children trembled in their parents' 武器.

In a grimy 穴を開ける-in-the-塀で囲む restaurant run by 民族の Albanians, the kids behind the 反対する smoked cigarettes as they cooked up burgers. At one （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する, an Albanian 交渉するd with a Syrian family, 申し込む／申し出ing to sell them t he 文書s.

地元のs there were making money by selling 文書s to migrants, 得るd from friends in the police. Street peddlers were making a small fortune too - selling 着せる／賦与するs and 一面に覆う／毛布s to the bedraggled 旅行者s. Mohammed bought a water-proof blue jacket for five euros.

For the next 10 hours, Mohammed and his companions stood in line at the 地元の hospital serving as the 登録 point, as arguments broke out between migrants and police.

It was here that he got into a conversation with a policeman who took an unnerving 利益／興味 in Mohammed's 旅行. He called over his brother, who was also a policeman.?

The brother （機の）カム out of the hospital and started asking Mohammed about ISIS and the 状況／情勢 in Aleppo, then he asked Mohammed if he knew of any ISIS 闘士，戦闘機s の中で the migrants. Mohammed was 確かな the policeman was trying to 新採用する him as an informant.

Mohammed gave the policeman his email, and the policeman asked him to stay in touch. With that, Mohammed and his comrades had their 文書s.

Now on a bus 長，率いるing toward Hungary, Mohammed was riding high, feeling proud of how he had 押し進めるd through the 障壁s 封鎖するing his and his comrades' path. He said: 'My group would not have come this far without me.'

On September 12 - 10 days and 1,700 miles after leaving Turkey - Mohammed and his friends had reached the Hungarian 国境. 500 yards 負かす／撃墜する the 鉄道／強行採決する 跡をつけるs, was the office where the Hungarians were 登録（する）ing and 指紋ing migrants.

But he had heard horror stories that if you 登録（する）d with the Hungarians, Germany would 軍隊 you 支援する to Hungary. He was 決定するd not to let that happen.

At the 辛勝する／優位 of the Balkan vineyard, Mohammed lay under a tree to collect his thoughts. Come nightfall, he and the other Syrians with him would make a run for it - past the barbed wire 盗品故買者 存在 built along the Hungarian 国境 to keep them out and past the 武装した 国境 guards.

Under the 注目する，もくろむs of the Hungarian guards, they pretended to be 長，率いるing toward the 登録 office but as soon as they passed the 国境 盗品故買者, they made their move.

They ducked left into a cornfie ld. On the other 味方する of the field, Mohammed knew from his earlier 偵察, was a road and a gas 駅／配置する. If they reached that, they could hide, then find a taxi to take them on their way.

Mohammed led the migrants and 難民s silently through the tall corn, signalling them with 手渡す gestures. He flattened の上に his belly, and the others did the same. One of the doctors in their group had his smartphone out, looking at the GPS.?

The doctor signaled everyone that he would 調査する ahead. He disappeared into the corn stalks. The doctor did not come 支援する.

They spotted the 石油 駅／配置する and as they 選ぶd up the pace, a policeman shouted: 'Stop! Stop!'

He was 速く followed by two police dogs, one of which jumped on Mohammed, knocking him to the ground. 'Please! Please!' Mohammed 叫び声をあげるd as the dog stood on his chest, snarling in his 直面する, the police flashlight in his 注目する，もくろむs.

'The dog really 脅すd me. I don't like dogs,' Mohammed said, unaware that their mouths were muzzled.

The Hungarians 逮捕（する）d the migrants, before taking their finger prints and 登録（する）ing them, by they 扱う／治療するd them 井戸／弁護士席, Mohammed said. The doctor who disappeared in the とうもろこし畑／穀物畑, Mohammed 設立する out later, made it to Vienna.?

After a 冷淡な night in a rain-drenched Hungarian （軍の）野営地，陣営, Mohammed was taken with one of his companions, Ahmed Naasan, to the Austrian 国境, and they crossed 30 hours after they had been ca ught by the Hungarians.

Mohammed was bruised, the 冷淡な he had been 苦しむing since the Greek フェリー（で運ぶ） was worse and he was worried about Abdul-Rahman. The boy had been 解放（する）d by the Hungarians before him and he did not know where he was.

But, he joked, after so long without a にわか雨 - his last one was in Greece - that he was still using deodorant 'so at least I don't 絶対 stink'.

He was also anxious, 恐れるing 登録 would 難破させる his chances of settling in Germany. So he turned to the 難民 grapevine, WhatsApp. A cousin who had made it to Germany 保証するd him the 指紋ing didn't 事柄.

Squatting on the ground at the train 駅／配置する in Jennersdorf, Austria, Mohammed was on five different WhatsApp 雑談（する）s with other Syrians in Germany, trying to 決定する which 明言する／公表するs ignored the Hungarian 登録 and would 認める 亡命.

Only one country from his goal, Mohammed's 楽観主義 was building. He ate a chocolate 妨げる／法廷，弁護士業 and, rather than dropping the wrapper on the ground as he usually did, he looked for a place to throw it away - the way they did it in Germany. Almost, anyway - He walked over and hid the wrapper in a bush by the 跡をつけるs.

'I am already a changed person,' he said.

Two days after he crossed into Hungary, it slammed its 国境 with Serbia shut, complaining that it must '保護する Europe's 国境s' if Greece was not up for it.?

With 4,000 亡命-探検者s a day still 上陸 on Greek shores and making their way through the Balkans, desperate migrants were 投げ上げる／ボディチェックするd from country to country, 直面するing only の近くにd doors.

On the trains across Austria, Mohammed was 上昇傾向. The miles were melting away. Through WhatsApp, he got good news - Abdul-Rahman was 安全な and already in Saarland, the German 明言する／公表する where Mohammed was 長，率いるing and where Dr Osman lived. There was nothing now but Germany.

'I'll 苦しむ for the first two months until I sort out my 事件／事情／状勢s, like the 亡命 審理，公聴会 and the residency,' he said. But once that was settled, he could visit his family in Turkey, then return to Germany to build his new life.?
