Sydney in 騒動 after race 暴動s

Australian 総理大臣 John Howard called for 民族の and 宗教的な 寛容 after racial 暴力/激しさ 爆発するd in parts of Sydney.

Racial 緊張 誘発するd 暴力/激しさ on Cronulla Beach on Sunday when around 5,000 people, some yelling 人種差別主義者 詠唱するs, attacked 青年s of Middle Eastern background, 説 they were defending their beach after lifesavers were attacked there last week.

"There appears to be an element of white supremacists and they really have no place in mainstream Australian society. Those sort of characters are best placed in Berlin 1930s, not in Cronulla 2005," NSW Police 大臣 Carl Scully told reporters.

On Sunday, 暴徒s of drunken and angry 青年s, some drapped in Australian 旗s, shouted "No more Lebs (Lebanese)". The 暴徒s chased and attacked Australians of Middle East 外見, 急ぐing の上に a train at one 行う/開催する/段階 to fight.

NSW 明言する/公表する 首相 Morris Iemma said the 暴力/激しさ was the "ugly 直面する of 人種差別主義 in Australia", but Howard said it did not 反映する a deeper problem with Australia's multi-cultural society.

"I do not 受託する that there is underlying 人種差別主義 in this country," said Howard.

"It is important that we 再確認する our 尊敬(する)・点 for freedom of 宗教 in this country, but it is also important that we place greater 強調 on 統合,差別撤廃 of people into the broader community and the avoidance of tribalism," he said.
