The crass insensitivity of Sir Ian Blair

Last updated at 10:45 29 January 2006

How 重要な. On the very day 政府 人物/姿/数字s 明らかにする/漏らす another 爆発 in 強盗s, muggings and other 暴力/激しさ, Britain's most 上級の policeman shows just why the 軍隊 is losing 尊敬(する)・点 and losing the 陰謀(を企てる).

It is hard to overstate the sheer crass insensitivity of Sir Ian Blair, the Met Commissioner, 説 he couldn't understand why the Soham 殺人s became 'the biggest story in Britain'.

Every other parent understands. The 殺人,大当り of Holly 井戸/弁護士席s and Jessica Chapman was a 罪,犯罪 that touched the deepest 恐れるs of millions of ordinary people - of whatever 民族の background.

Though Sir Ian now 問題/発行するs a lame 陳謝 for his 発言/述べるs, the 無(不)能 to comprehend the deepest instincts of the public raises 深遠な questions about his suitability for high office.

And how 熟した that he was in 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 of '多様制' 問題/発行するs when police - as we learned from this week's 裁判,公判 - bungled the 調査 into the 殺人 of Damilola Taylor, a story of course that received 抱擁する prominence in the マスコミ.

But the real stupidity of Sir Ian's 発言/述べるs is that they have sidelined his 主張 that the マスコミ is 'institutionally 人種差別主義者' - a 支配する that is worthy of 強健な 審議.

To use the word institutional is by its 広範囲にわたる nature a serious 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 (one, incidentally, likely to 動かす up community 憤慨). And it is one this paper is uniquely placed to answer.

For it was the Mail that 危険d the 刑務所,拘置所ing of its Editor and a 抱擁する 名誉き損 活動/戦闘 by 指名するing the white 凶漢s who 殺人d 黒人/ボイコット 十代の少年少女 Stephen Lawrence. It was that and our その後の (選挙などの)運動をする for 司法(官) for Stephen that led to the Macpherson 調査 - which of course (刑事)被告 the Met of 'institutional 人種差別主義'.

The first thing to be said is that the use of the word 'institutional' is far too generalised to be useful. There are good and bad things about all organisations - and to 非難する everyone is unhelpful.

In 最近の years, the Mail has welcomed many bl ack and Asian readers and we 反映する that in the paper. We have 充てるd countless pages to news stories, features and 詳細(に述べる)d 分析 伴う/関わるing 罪,犯罪s against 黒人/ボイコット and Asian 犠牲者s.

The uncle of one, Anthony Walker - 殺人d with an ice axe in Liverpool - 賞賛するs this paper for its 報告(する)/憶測ing of the 悲劇. So does the mother of Danielle Beccan, gunned 負かす/撃墜する in Nottingham.

The 長,率いる of the イスラム教徒 会議 (テニスなどの)シングルス out the Mail for its 扱うing of the Lawrence 殺人 as does the CRE.

Yet it is true some 殺人s receive more attention than others. But the fact is (and this should really be 演習ing Sir Ian) that 殺人 today is so ありふれた it doesn't automatically 命令(する) マスコミ 治療.

Doubtless many 黒人/ボイコット and Asian 殺人s don't get the ニュース報道 that such 悲劇s 長所, but newspapers can't fill their pages with unremitting horror.

As for Sir Ian, there seems no end to his errors of judgment in what has become a long litany of 失敗s.

His bizarre (人命などを)奪う,主張する that the Met were 'playing out of their socks' after the 狙撃 of the Brazilian ジーンズ Charles de Menezes&his hounding of three officers who were 'hung out to 乾燥した,日照りの' によれば a 法廷 on a 偽の 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 of '人種差別主義' & his ロビーing for the 政府's terror 法律s&許すing police 乗り物s to be plastered with 投票(する) 労働 stickers&no wonder the public is uneasy.

Sadly, the 大多数 of magnificent police officers are 存在 let 負かす/撃墜する by 上級の 指揮官s, such as Sir Ian, who are playing at politics.

Sir Ian should remember that he is not a 政治家,政治屋. If he spent more time catching 犯罪のs and いっそう少なく on 配達するing 流行の/上流の nostrums to the 残り/休憩(する) of the country, it would be better for everyone - 特に the 主要都市の Police.
