Scientists on 研究 使節団 in the Bering Sea photograph rare North 太平洋の 権利 鯨s for the first time in a DECADE

  • The Yushin Maru 2 boat 選ぶd up the 鯨s だいたい 10 to 32 miles out and after four-and-a-half hours, was able to 跡をつける the 哺乳動物s 負かす/撃墜する
  • It is the first such spotting in over a 10年間
  • By 1849, the 鯨s were 押し進めるd to endangerment but then their numbers swelled up until Soviet hunters in the 1960s began attacking them

A 研究 大型船 in the Bering Sea photographed two of the animals Sunday and 得るd a 生体検査 見本 from one, the 国家の 大洋の and Atmospheric 行政 発表するd Thursday.

NOAA 漁業s 研究 biologist Jessica Crance was on board the Yushin Maru 2, when the 鯨s were spotted.?

The ship is part of the 太平洋の Ocean 鯨 and Ecosystem 研究 program, a collaborative 成果/努力 長,率いるd by the International 捕鯨 (売買)手数料,委託(する)/委員会/権限.?

Using an acoustic recorder, and between sounds of 殺し屋 鯨s and walrus, Crance 選ぶd up faint calls of a 権利 鯨 east of Bristol Bay, Alaska.

The sounds (機の)カム from an 概算の 10 to 32 miles (16 to 51 キロメーターs) away and the ship 長,率いるd west, she said in a blog 入ること/参加(者). After four and a half hours, にもかかわらず the presence of minke and 猫背/ザトウ鯨 鯨s, and only a few calls from the 権利 鯨s, the rare animals were spotted.

The two 権利 鯨s are part of the eastern 在庫/株 that number just 30 to 50 鯨s, said Phillip Clapham, 長,率いる of the cetacean program at NOAA's Alaska 漁業s Science 中心 in Seattle.

Within 14 years, Clapham said, the overharvest of the slow, buoyant animals sent many whalers through the Bering 海峡 to 追跡(する) bowhead 鯨s inst ead.

A modest 復帰 of 権利 鯨s in the 20th Century was derailed when Soviet whalers in the 1960s ignored 批判的に low numbers and 不法に killed eastern 在庫/株 権利 鯨s in the 湾 of Alaska, Clapham said.

The 権利 鯨 見本d Sunday had been seen eight times before, Clapham said. The last time was a 10年間 ago.

熟考する/考慮するing North 太平洋の 権利 鯨s is 複雑にするd by the expense of reaching their habitat in the 湾 of Alaska and the Bering Sea. 批判的な data remains unknown, 含むing their winter habits and many of their preferred summer feeding areas for copepods, a tiny crustacean 浮遊生物.

'We don't know what habitats continue to be important to the 種類,' Clapham said.

The biggest 脅しs to the animals are fishing gear entanglements and ship strikes, Clapham said.
