COMMENT: A new 夜明け and a いっそう少なく democratic Britain

Last updated at 23:03 13 December 2007

For those who believe in British 主権,独立, this was a depressing day.

The spectacle of Gordon Brown scuttling shiftily in and out of Lisbon to 調印する the European 改革(する) 条約 was an apt 結論 to what has been a disgracefully dishonest saga.

One thing is 確かな : today, Britain is a いっそう少なく democratic nation.

The 条約, as everyone except our 政府 収容する/認めるs, is the European 憲法 by another 指名する.

The same 憲法, in fact, on which 労働 約束d a 国民投票 in its manifesto.

The 総理大臣 has 明確に made a 冷笑的な 計算/見積り that the 損失 done by 取り消すing on that 約束 will be いっそう少なく than the 当惑 of a 国民投票 (選挙などの)運動をする. He wasn't 用意が出来ている to ask the people, because he didn't like the choice that they would make.

So now we have a 永久の 大統領,/社長 of the European 会議; a European 外務大臣 器具/実施するing a European 外交政策; the loss of our 拒否権 over 法律制定 in 61 areas; 支配(する)/統制する of our 国境s passing to Brussels through a ありふれた 移民/移住 and 亡命 政策; a ありふれた defence 政策 and a European army; and a growing European police 軍隊.

In these areas, and the many others already 降伏するd, we have lost the link between 議会 and people.

Most of our 法律s are made in Brussels, with Britain having little input, and no ability to call those who 制定するd them to account at the 投票(する) box.

One morning, the British people will wake up and realise that because of sellouts by 連続する British 政府s they no longer live in a true 僕主主義.

Mr Brown's 拒絶 to give the British people the 約束d 国民投票 will dog him and the 労働 Party for years.

Social immobility

FROM John Major's "classless society" to Tony Blair's "適切な時期 society", 政治家,政治屋s are always 約束ing a Britain whereb ackground is no 障壁 to success.

Now it is (疑いを)晴らす that they have failed.

研究 by the London School of 経済的なs 設立する that social mobility, 手段d by the ability of 有望な children from poor backgrounds to fulfil their academic 可能性のある, has 改善するd not one 手早く書き留める since the Fifties.

Children from middle-class homes 追いつく their brighter but poorer compatriots.

Surely this depressing finding will call into question much of the Left-wing orthodoxy that has 支配するd political 審議 over the last 世代?

The 大規模な 議席数是正 of 基金s from rich to poor through the 税金 and 利益 system has failed.

Handouts, it seems, are not the same thing as a 手渡す up.

Our education system, 損失d by trendy teaching and the 破壊 of grammar schools, has left poorer children behind.

But most of all, the 崩壊(する) of marriage and the 拒絶する/低下する of family life, encouraged by a perverse 税金 and 利益 structure, has 加速するd the 過程.

Yes, we need better schools, but more than anything society needs strong families teaching their children discipline, aspiration and self-依存.

Christmas on the line

Christmas, as a thousand adverts and sermons remind us, is a family time. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell the people who run our 鉄道s.

They've 示唆するd that people should stay at home over the festive season, enjoying a 独房監禁 turkey twizzler on Christmas morning, because they've chosen to dig up most of our rail lines.

There is a 推論する/理由 for this madness. If they do the 維持/整備 over the holiday, they won't have to 補償する season ticket 支えるもの/所有者s.

And in the New Year, we'll return to be 迎える/歓迎するd by fare 増加するs of up to 14 per cent.
