There has always been an other-worldly 質 to Tintagel 城, the mighty 要塞 of Arthurian legend which またがるs its clifftop ravine on the North Cornish coast.

Last Sunday, the two 味方するs were 再会させるd for the first time in centuries thanks to a new £5million 橋（渡しをする） straight out of a fantasy novel.?

It was in Tudor times that the 狭くする （土地などの）細長い一片 of land which once connected the 本土／大陸 part of 'King Arthur's 城' to its island citadel fell into the sea.

Since then, any 訪問者s have been 軍隊d to 規模 148 steps 削減（する） in to the 激しく揺する. For the old and infirm, it was out of the question.

Now, though, Tintagel is 再会させるd ― much to the 救済 of the 地元のs. Up to a ４半期/4分の1 of a million tourists each year are now 推定する／予想するd to use this 21st century drawbridge ― as I have just done.?

With a gentle bounce underfoot and an alarming gap in the middle, it is an exhilarating experience.

But this crossing also 先触れ（する）s an important new 時代 for many of this country's greatest historic treasures. And 監督するing it all is the Queen's son-in-法律.

副／悪徳行為 海軍大将 Sir Timothy Laurence, husband of the Princess 王室の, is one of the most low-profile members of the 王室の Family but, as chairman of English 遺産, he is in 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金 of some of the most famous structures in the world.

He is the 長，指導者 custodian of more than 400 hallowed 国家の 場所／位置s ― 範囲ing from Stonehenge and the 戦場 of Hastings to Shropshire's アイロンをかける B 山の尾根 and Osborne House ― not to について言及する all those blue plaques on the homes of bygone 広大な／多数の／重要なs.

On his watch, the whole lot has been turned into a new charity. And it has never 試みる／企てるd anything やめる like the new 橋（渡しをする） to 'King Arthur's 城'.

So, ahead of the 開始, I sat 負かす／撃墜する for a rare and wide-範囲ing interview with the boss to discuss a 範囲 of 問題／発行するs, from 政府 補助金s and HS2 to marrying in to the 王室の Family, the prospects of a new 王室の ヨット ('not now') and the 苦痛 of losing friends on active service.

What is 即時に （疑いを）晴らす is that Sir Tim is much more than a figurehead. 'We're very ambitious.?

We want to do things that are a bit みごたえのある,' he tells me as we 熟考する／考慮する the 計画（する）s for Tintagel. 'This is a leap. The whole point about it is accessibility.'

He 解任するs his first visit to Tintagel, 交渉するing the cliff in 深い winter. 'I first went 負かす／撃墜する on a wet January day and I think it's one of the most dangerous things I've ever done climbing 負かす／撃墜する those steps!'

He got in touch with his friends Julia and Hans Rausing, members of the Swedish Tetra Pak 一族／派閥, though he is modest about his part.

'I know the Rausing family and made an 初期の 接触する,' he says. The family 信用 made a generous 認める of £2.5 million, the largest in the organisation's history. What had been a nebulous idea could suddenly take 形態／調整.

One might 推定する／予想する to find a 危険-averse, 安定した-as-she-goes approach from a retired 海軍大将 in 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金 of a lot of old buildings (特に one whose 公式の／役人 演説（する）／住所 is Buckingham Palace).?

Sir Tim, however, speaks 率直に and 明確に feels he is on a 使節団 ― against the clock.

He was 任命するd chairman of English 遺産 as it was 存在 削減（する） loose from the 明言する／公表する.?

Pre-2015, it had been a public 部門 団体／死体 with two 役割s: running historic 場所／位置s such as Old Sarum and Audley End but also 事実上の／代理 as the planning regulator for all 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる）d buildings.

Then the 政府 分裂（する） it up. A new 明言する／公表する 機関, Historic England, took on the 規則 while all the historic 場所／位置s went to a charity under Sir Tim.?

It would 保持する the 'English 遺産' 肩書を与える but was given a 認める of £80 million to get started. After that, it would be on its own.

Since most of English 遺産's 場所／位置s ― hill forts, remote 廃虚s and so on ― are open and 解放する／自由な, it 落ちるs to a 少数，小数派 of 支払う／賃金ing 目印s such as Tintagel to subsidise the 残り／休憩（する）.

'When we get to the end of our 資本／首都 認める in 2023, we've got to produce enough running income to cover our 維持費s 加える 付加 income to 投資する,' says Sir Tim.?

He might talk like the chairman of a FTSE100 company but his position at English 遺産 is 未払いの.?

Yet he 明確に loves it and has just been 任命するd for a second four-year 称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語. And he is not afraid to get political defending his patch.

For example, he is 毅然とした that the 政府 should 削除する 付加価値税 on 自然保護 work.?

'I would love to see 付加価値税 減ずるd on historic buildings. We've been fighting that 戦う／戦い for a long time.

'It would make a 抱擁する difference to the historic fabric of this country and it would 供給する a lot of extra 職業s.'

'I don't think the 政府 is "anti" but I think it could be more "プロの／賛成の". This is not a loss to the 財務省. There are 利益s to the 財務省.'?

He is also a fan of big, contentious 事業／計画（する）s such as the 提案するd road tunnel beneath Stonehenge and HS2.?

'I'm supportive of HS2 ― so long as we can do it in a way that is 同情的な to the countryside ― because I believe very 堅固に in linking the North and the South of the 部隊d Kingdom.'

Having risen to the 最高の，を越す of the 王室の 海軍 during his 37-year career, Sir Tim has taken a number of public and 私的な 部門 役割s.?

老年の 64, he 持続するs a schedule on a par with that of his famously busy wife (with 518 public 義務s in 2018, the Princess 王室の still 最高の，を越すs the 王室の Family's league （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する of 約束／交戦s).

There, too, he 勧めるd in a programme of 革新s. The son of a 王室の 海軍 officer who served in World War I, Sir Tim is keen to 確実にする we never forget those killed in all 衝突s.?

In 1982, he was serving as 航海 officer in the 破壊者 HMS Sheffield, when he was 召喚するd to Northern Ireland to lead a 海上の patrol against アイルランド共和国軍 gun-走者s.?

'My first thoughts were of friends. Several officers were killed, all of whom I knew.'

The Duke of York, 59, sent the Princess 王室の birthday congratulations, with a collection of images of Andrew and his older sister over the years. A 黒人／ボイコット and white snap taken in 1960, showsng the 王室の family having a picnic on the Balmoral 城 広い地所, when Anne was just 10 years old.

'Everybody who marries a member of the 王室の Family has to （手先の）技術 their own way of doing things,' says Sir Tim.?

'I'm a 抱擁する fan of Prince Albert. He designed and built Osborne with William Cubitt. He also designed and built Balmoral 城.?

He had an incredible mind. 耐えるing in mind how young he was when he died and what he 達成するd, he was an 驚くべき／特命の／臨時の man.'

So is Albert his inspiration? He smiles and points to a more 最近の 役割 model. 'I think I've 伸び（る）d more from the Duke of Edinburgh 明白に because I know him very 井戸／弁護士席.?

He is somebody who has supported the 君主, but also done a 抱擁する 量 in his own 権利.?

Think of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award 計画／陰謀 and the number of young people who have been through that.'

The Duke had been one of the 海軍's rising 星／主役にするs when the sudden death of George VI put a stop to all that.

Sir Tim has 広大な／多数の／重要な sympathy for his father-in-法律. 'The difference for me, 本人自身で, was I was 決定するd to stay in the 海軍 and I was able to do that.?

That gave me a career in 新規加入 to supporting my wife for many years. It was 示唆するd that the Duke should leave the 海軍 when the Queen became 君主.

'I think, looking 支援する, it might have been possible for him to stay for a bit which might have been good. But anyway, that's what happened.'?

It is now more than 20 years since Britannia was 閉鎖するd to become a tourist attraction in Leith. Millions of us would dearly love to see a 交替／補充.

Sir Tim thinks it could be a long wait. 'I don't think, at the moment, it could work,' he says. 'I won't say that it won't in the 未来 because the tradition of 王室の ヨットs goes 支援する to Charles II.

'The Queen is probably not going to do trips in the way that she has done in Britannia in the past. In a new 統治する, perhaps the moment may come when they say: '井戸／弁護士席, come on, We're a 海上の nation.?

'We are good at the sea. We connect with the world through the sea. Perhaps we should have a ship in some form that can 代表する our nation overseas.'

Britannia, like the 君主国, the English language and so much else ― 含むing our 広大な／多数の／重要な historic 場所／位置s ― are examples of soft 力／強力にする. So do we make the most of them?

'Probably not. I think we could make more of them,' Sir Tim 反映するs.?

'The story that we try to tell through our English 遺産 所有物／資産／財産s is of a nation developing from its roots, developing the 支配する of 法律, developing good governance, developing civilised structures.

'I think that is something which most countries overseas 高く評価する／（相場などが）上がる more than many people in Britain 現実に.'

He points to some conversations he had during this summer's 公式訪問 at the Palace.

'I spoke to several people in 大統領 Trump's （軍の）野営地，陣営 who 高く評価する／（相場などが）上がる what Britain has 与える／捧げるd and can 与える／捧げる.'?

Does it bother him when, say, a hectic 王室の 小旅行する with the Princess goes unnoticed 支援する home?

As one who never sought the limelight in the first place, he is relaxed. 'My 観察 of those trips is that they have an 衝撃 overseas, which is very 重要な and not always 高く評価する／（相場などが）上がるd.

'There's a 広大な／多数の／重要な poem called the 法律s Of The 海軍, written in about 1900. One of the 詩（を作る）s is: 'If you 勝利，勝つ through an African ジャングル/ unmentioned at home in the 圧力（をかける）/ Trouble not, no man sees the piston/ But it driveth the ship, 非，不，無 the いっそう少なく.' I love that.?

いつかs you have to go overseas and do your bit and just 受託する that people won't notice it. It's part of life ― as 失望させるing as the fact that it rains on Mondays!'

So what next after spanning the chasm at Tintagel 城? Sir Tim is keen to see a broader 範囲 of 指名するs on Britain's blue plaques. As for new 場所／位置s, he'd like to take on some 'brilliant' old Lancashire cotton mills, にもかかわらず friendly 競争 with the 国家の 信用.

And he would dearly love to house the Bayeux Tapestry at a 目的-built 場所／位置 at the 戦う／戦い of Hastings in Sussex when it makes its long-を待つd first visit to Britain in the next few years.

He sees no 推論する／理由 why the 資本／首都 should hog it. 'It's good for people to get out of London ― and 戦う／戦い is not that far.' He also wants to see English 遺産 押し進める its £5-a-month 会員の地位 計画／陰謀 ― with 解放する／自由な 入ること／参加（者） to all 場所／位置s ― over the one million 示す.

Some might lament the fact that 広大な／多数の／重要な 目印s such as Stonehenge, the Cenotaph or Dover 城 depend on 動揺させるing a tin.

Sir Tim sees it as an 適切な時期: 'It's much clearer, now that we are a charity, for people to know what they are giving money to and how we're using it.'

At Tintagel, the results are plain to see. Sir Tim believes the new 橋（渡しをする） would probably never have happened in the days of 明言する／公表する 支配（する）／統制する. 'It would have been difficult,' he says. 'We needed the independence of thought.'

Walking across the 予定する-lined pathway over the dizzying 無効の ― in fact it consists of two 橋（渡しをする）s with a three-インチ gap in the middle for thermal 拡大 ― I have no 疑問 this will be a splendid 新規加入 to the Cornish landscape.

事業／計画（する） 経営者／支配人 Reuben Briggs points to the steel 'dampers' which will 妨げる a wobble like that which 疫病／悩ますd London's Millennium 橋（渡しをする） and says that the design can withstand a ハリケーン.

The main problem I 予知する will be the 列s flocking to 支払う／賃金 homage to King Arthur, Sir Lancelot, Sir Galahad and the other knights of the 一連の会議、交渉／完成する （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する.
