WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE CORONAVIRUS?

What is the coronavirus??

A coronavirus is a type of ウイルス which can 原因(となる) illness in animals and people. ウイルスs break into 独房s inside their host and use them to 再生する itself and 混乱に陥れる/中断させる the 団体/死体's normal 機能(する)/行事s. Coronaviruses are 指名するd after the Latin word 'corona', which means 栄冠を与える, because they are encased by a spiked 爆撃する which 似ているs a 王室の 栄冠を与える.

The coronavirus from Wuhan is one which has never been seen before this 突発/発生. It has been 指名するd SARS-CoV-2 by the International 委員会 on Taxonomy of ウイルスs. The 指名する stands for 厳しい 激烈な/緊急の Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2.

専門家s say the bug, which has killed around one in 50 患者s since the 突発/発生 began in December, is a 'sister' of the SARS illness which 攻撃する,衝突する 中国 in 2002, so has been 指名するd after it.

The 病気 that the ウイルス 原因(となる)s has been 指名するd COVID-19, which stands for coronavirus 病気 2019.

Dr Helena Maier, from the Pirbright 学校/設ける, said: 'Coronaviruses are a family of ウイルスs that 感染させる a wide 範囲 of different 種類 含むing humans, cattle, pigs, chickens, dogs, cats and wild animals.?

'Until this new coronavirus was identified, there were only six different coronaviruses known to 感染させる humans. Four of these 原因(となる) a 穏やかな ありふれた 冷淡な-type illness, but since 2002 there has been the 出現 of two new coronaviruses that can 感染させる humans and result in more 厳しい 病気 (厳しい 激烈な/緊急の respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronaviruses).?

'Coronaviruses are known to be able to occasionally jump from one 種類 to another and that is what h appened in the 事例/患者 of SARS, MERS and the new coronavirus. The animal origin of the new coronavirus is not yet known.'?

The first human 事例/患者s were 公然と 報告(する)/憶測d from the Chinese city of Wuhan, where だいたい 11million people live, after medics first started 公然と 報告(する)/憶測ing 感染s on December 31.

By January 8, 59 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うd 事例/患者s had been 報告(する)/憶測d and seven people were in 批判的な 条件. 実験(する)s were developed for the new ウイルス and 記録,記録的な/記録するd 事例/患者s started to 殺到する.

The first person died that week and, by January 16, two were dead and 41 事例/患者s were 確認するd. The next day, scientists 予報するd that 1,700 people had become 感染させるd, かもしれない up to 7,000.?

Where does the ウイルス come from?

によれば scientists, the ウイルス almost certainly (機の)カム from bats.?Coronaviruses in general tend to 起こる/始まる in animals ? the 類似の SARS and MERS ウイルスs are believed to have 起こる/始まるd in civet cats and camels, それぞれ.

The first 事例/患者s of COVID-19 (機の)カム from people visiting or working in a live animal market in Wuhan, which has since been の近くにd 負かす/撃墜する for 調査.

Although the market is 公式に a seafood market, other dead and living animals were 存在 sold there, 含むing wolf cubs, salamanders, snakes, peacocks, porcupines and camel meat.?

A 熟考する/考慮する by the?Wuhan 学校/設ける of Virology, published in February 2020 in the 科学の 定期刊行物 Nature, 設立する that the genetic make-up ウイルス 見本s 設立する in 患者s in 中国 is 96 per cent 同一の to a coronavirus they 設立する in bats.

However, there were not many bats at th e market so scientists say it was likely there was an animal which 行為/法令/行動するd as a middle-man, 契約ing it from a bat before then transmitting it to a human. It has not yet been 確認するd what type of animal this was.

Dr Michael Skinner, a virologist at 皇室の College London, was not 伴う/関わるd with the 研究 but said: 'The 発見 definitely places the origin of nCoV in bats in 中国.

'We still do not know whether another 種類 served as an 中間の host to amplify the ウイルス, and かもしれない even to bring it to the market, nor what 種類 that host might have been.'??

So far the fatalities are やめる low. Why are health 専門家s so worried about it??

専門家s say the international community is 関心d about the ウイルス because so little is known about it and it appears to be spreading quickly.

It is 類似の to SARS, which 感染させるd 8,000 people and killed nearly 800 in an 突発/発生 in Asia in 2003, in that it is a type of coronavirus which 感染させるs humans' 肺s. It is いっそう少なく deadly than SARS, however, which killed around one in 10 people, compared to だいたい one in 50 for COVID-19.

Another 推論する/理由 for 関心 is that nobody has any 免疫 to the ウイルス because they've never 遭遇(する)d it before. This means it may be able to 原因(となる) more 損失 than ウイルスs we come across often, like the flu or ありふれた 冷淡な.

Speaking at a 要点説明 in January, Oxford University professor, Dr Peter Horby, said: 'Novel ウイルスs can spread much faster through the 全住民 than ウイルスs which 循環させる all the time because we have no 免疫 to them.

'Most seasonal flu ウイルスs have a 事例/患者 fatality 率 of いっそう少なく than one in 1,000 people. Here we're talking about a ウイルス where we don't understand fully the severity spect rum but it's possible the 事例/患者 fatality 率 could be as high as two per cent.'

If the death 率 is truly two per cent, that means two out of every 100 患者s who get it will die.?

'My feeling is it's lower,' Dr Horby 追加するd. 'We're probably 行方不明の this iceberg of milder 事例/患者s. But that's the 現在の circumstance we're in.

'Two per cent 事例/患者 fatality 率 is 類似の to the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918 so it is a 重要な 関心 globally.'

How does the ウイルス spread?

The illness can spread between people just through coughs and sneezes, making it an 極端に contagious 感染. And it may also spread even before someone has symptoms.

It is believed to travel in the saliva and even through water in the 注目する,もくろむs, therefore の近くに 接触する, kissing, and 株ing cutlery or utensils are all risky. It can also live on surfaces, such as plastic and steel, for up to 72 hours, meaning people can catch it by touching 汚染するd surfaces.

初めは, people were thought to be catching it from a live animal market in Wuhan city. But 事例/患者s soon began to 現れる in people who had never been there, which 軍隊d medics to realise it was spreading from person to person.?

What does the ウイルス do to you? What are the symptoms?

Once someone has caught the COVID-19 ウイルス it may take between two and 14 days, or even longer, for them to show any symptoms ? but they may still be contagious during this time.

If and when they do become ill, typical 調印するs 含む a runny nose, a cough, sore throat and a fever (最高気温). The 広大な 大多数 of 患者s will 回復する from these without any 問題/発行するs, and many will need no 医療の help at all.

In a small group of 患者s, who seem おもに to be the 年輩の or those with long-称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 illnesses, it can lead to 肺炎. 肺炎 is an 感染 in which the insides of the 肺s swell up and fill with fluid. It makes it ますます difficult to breathe and, if left untreated, can be 致命的な and 窒息させる people.

人物/姿/数字s are showing that young children do not seem to be 特に 不正に 影響する/感情d by the ウイルス, which they say is peculiar considering their susceptibility to flu, but it is not (疑いを)晴らす why.?

What have genetic 実験(する)s 明らかにする/漏らすd about the ウイルス??

Scientists in 中国 have 記録,記録的な/記録するd the genetic sequences of around 19 緊張するs of the ウイルス and 解放(する)d them to 専門家s working around the world.?

This 許すs others to 熟考する/考慮する them, develop 実験(する)s and 潜在的に look into 扱う/治療するing the illness they 原因(となる).???

Examinations have 明らかにする/漏らすd the coronavirus did not change much ? changing is known as 突然変異するing ? much during the 早期に 行う/開催する/段階s of its spread.

However, the director-general of 中国's 中心 for 病気 支配(する)/統制する and 予防, Gao Fu, said the ウイルス was 突然変異するing and adapting as it spread through people.

This means 成果/努力s to 熟考する/考慮する the ウイルス and to 潜在的に 支配(する)/統制する it may be made extra difficult because the ウイルス might look different every time scientists analyse it.???

More 熟考する/考慮する may be able to 明らかにする/漏らす whether the ウイルス first 感染させるd a small number of people then change and spread from them, or whether there were さまざまな 見解/翻訳/版s of the ウイルス coming from animals which have developed 分かれて.

How dangerous is the ウイルス???

The ウイルス has a death 率 of around two per cent. This is a 類似の death 率 to the Spanish Flu 突発/発生 which, in 1918, went on to kill around 50million people.

専門家s have been 衝突d since the beginning of the 突発/発生 about whether the true number of people who are 感染させるd is 意味ありげに higher than the 公式の/役人 numbers of 記録,記録的な/記録するd 事例/患者s. Some people are 推定する/予想するd to have such 穏やかな symptoms that they never even realise they are ill unless they're 実験(する)d, so only the more serious 事例/患者s get discovered, making the death (死傷者)数 seem higher than it really is.

However, an 調査 into 政府 監視 in 中国 said it had 設立する no 推論する/理由 to believe this was true.

Dr Bruce Aylward, a World Health Organization 公式の/役人 who went on a 使節団 to 中国, said there was no 証拠 that 人物/姿/数字s were only showing the tip of the iceberg, and said 記録,記録的な/記録するing appeared to be 正確な, Stat News 報告(する)/憶測d.

Can the ウイルス be cured??

The COVID-19 ウイルス cannot be cured and it is 証明するing difficult to 含む/封じ込める.

抗生物質s do not work against ウイルスs, so they are out of the question. Antiviral 麻薬s can work, but the 過程 of understanding a ウイルス then developing and producing 麻薬s to 扱う/治療する it would take years and 抱擁する 量s of money.

No ワクチン 存在するs for the coronavirus yet and it's not likely one will be developed in time to be of any use in this 突発/発生, for 類似の 推論する/理由s to the above.

The 国家の 学校/設けるs of Health in the US, and Baylor University in Waco, Texas, say they are working on a ワクチン based on what they know about coronaviruses in general, using (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) from the SARS 突発/発生. But this may take a year or more to develop, によれば 製薬の 科学(工学)技術.

現在/一般に, 政府s and health 当局 are working to 含む/封じ込める the ウイルス and to care for 患者s who are sick and stop them 感染させるing other people.

People who catch the illness are 存在 検疫d in hospitals, where their symptoms can be 扱う/治療するd and they will be away from the uninfected public.

And airports around the world are putting in place 審査 対策 such as having doctors on-場所/位置, taking people's 気温s to check for fevers and using thermal 審査 to 位置/汚点/見つけ出す those who might be ill (感染 原因(となる)s a raised 気温).

However, it can take weeks for symptoms to appear, so there is only a small 見込み that 患者s will be spotted up in an airport.

Is this 突発/発生 an 疫病/流行性の or a pandemic????

The 突発/発生 was 宣言するd a pandemic on March 11. A pandemic is defined by the World Health Organization as the '世界的な spread of a new 病気'.?

以前, the UN 機関 said most 事例/患者s outside of Hubei had been 'spillover' from the epicentre, so the 病気 wasn't 現実に spreading 活発に around the world.
