Sportsmail's Paul Newman remembers his 最高の，を越す 10 greatest memories

It is the most important, evocative series in cricket. The Ashes are the ultimate contest for any player and 観察者／傍聴者, and have produced so many unforgettable 衝突／不一致s and moments of 演劇 over the years.

Here, Sportsmail’s Cricket 特派員 Paul Newman chooses his 10 favourite Ashes memories as the 最新の 熱望して-を待つd instalment begins in Brisbane.

It just has to be, at the 最高の，を越す of my personal Ashes tree, the Headingley 実験（する） of 1981. For any 15-year-old, the sight of Ian Botham 反抗するing the 半端物s by transforming that 実験（する） and series with a swashbuckling century was enough to 点火（する） a lifelong love 事件／事情／状勢 with the game.

But it was （頭が）ひょいと動く Willis’s eight for 43 to 勝利，勝つ the match that goes 負かす／撃墜する as my かつてない No 1 memory. I bunked off school to watch the 結論するing moments over the road at Simon Pritchard’s house. When our 地理学 teacher Mr McKenzie 設立する out he was angry - not because we had 行方不明になるd his lesson but because we hadn’t told him so he could come with us!

Edgbaston 2005

If there was one Ashes 実験（する） even more exciting than Headingley ’81, then it has to be Edgbaston 2005, subsequently dubbed the ‘Greatest 実験（する）’.

Australia's last pair, Brett 物陰／風下 and Michael Kasprowicz, had taken Australia to within three runs of victory and a formidable 2-0 lead in the series. Then Steve Harmison produced a short ball that flicked Kasprowicz’s glove - although the batsman’s 手渡す was later shown to have been off the bat 扱う - and wicketkeeper Geraint Jones dived 今後 to take the catch. Amazing.

Oval 2005

How about Kevin Pietersen’s 158 on the last day at The Oval, which gave England the urn after arguably the best Ashes 一連の the lot?

What 演劇 広げるd as this 驚くべき／特命の／臨時の new talent ended his first 実験（する） series for England by taking the attack to Australia in an 試みる／企てる to give his 味方する the draw that would 勝利，勝つ them the Ashes.

He was dropped 早期に on by Shane 警告する but that didn’t stop the 広大な／多数の／重要な 脚-spinner running to congratulate his friend when his innings was finally over and he was leaving the Oval 行う／開催する／段階. Brilliant stuff.

Headingley 1977

Let's go 支援する to the first Ashes series I watched, as an 11-year-old in 1977 . My 優れた memory was of a 確かな Geoffrey ボイコット（する） hitting an on-運動 for four off Greg Chappell, through the 脚s of his batting partner Graham Roope at Headingley, to bring up his 100th hundred.

It was in 前線 of his home （人が）群がる, too, and for some 推論する／理由 I always remember ボイコット（する） 存在 襲う and someone taking his cap. It was later returned and I have this memory of ボイコット（する） telling TV, ‘Of course he brought it 支援する ... he’s a Yorkshireman.’

Edgbaston 1997

I had followed Nasser Hussain’s career since I played against him in club cricket and had become good friends with him by the time he played against Australia for the 1997 Ashes.

I will always remember Hussain’s 二塁打 hundred at Edgbaston that year against the 広大な／多数の／重要な 警告する et al because, on that day, Nasser played at a level as good as anyone in the world; a level that he never やめる matched for the 残り／休憩（する） of his career.

It was a truly awesome 業績／成果 and the moment he 削減（する） 警告する for four to go to 200 will always l ive with me.

Melbourne 1998

Dean Headley was a very 罰金 bowler who would have played a lot more cricket for England had he not 苦しむd a career-ending 支援する 傷害. But at least he will always have Melbourne 1998 to remember.

England were trying to stop Australia 得点する／非難する／２０ing just 175 to 勝利，勝つ at the MCG and, because of Headley’s genuinely world-class burst of four wickets for four runs in 13 balls, they were just about able to do it and won by 12 runs.

But it was the final wicket, Darren Gough 解任するing Glenn McGrath to give England a famous victory, that qualifies as one of my favourite moments. The sight of Gough standing 勝利を得た and roaring at the vanquished Australians is an indelible one.

Sydney 1994/95

Memories can be just as vivid for 消極的な 同様に as 肯定的な 推論する／理由s. The sight of Graeme Hick, distraught, after マイク Atherton had 宣言するd with him on 98 in Sydney in 1994-95 to 否定する him his first Ashes century is something I will never forget.

I remember watching and getting 失望させるd that Hick had become bogged 負かす／撃墜する at a moment when the England captain was 明確に looking to 宣言する to try to 勝利，勝つ a 実験（する） on another difficult 小旅行する. He had even played out a maiden off Damien Fleming.

I felt Atherton was perfectly within his 権利s but 事実上 all the sympathy after 区s was with Hick, who was angry and 荒廃させるd because he was still trying to 設立する himself at the highest level, something he never やめる did.

Atherton says now that he might have made a mistake but for what it’s 価値（がある） I still think he did the 権利 thing. No-one is bigger than the team, after all, and Hick was 持つ／拘留するing England up.

Melbourne 1982/83

支援する to Melbourne in 1982-83, when I listened to the 実験（する） Match Special ニュース報道 of the Ashes late into the night on the 無線で通信する.

England were 2-0 負かす／撃墜する going to the MCG but a final day had 夜明けd with Australia’s last pair of Allan 国境 and Jeff Thomson needing 37 more runs to 勝利，勝つ and 18,000 people let in 解放する／自由な for the finale.

ob Willis was England captain and had 許すd 国境 to take （テニスなどの）シングルス to get Thomson on to the strike, but Thommo seemed comfortable and it started to look like Australia were going to pull off a famous 勝利，勝つ.

That was until Ian Botham conjured up one last 成果／努力 to take Thomson’s 辛勝する／優位. The ball went straight to Chr is Tavare at second slip but he could only parry the ball over his shoulder where, thankfully for England, first slip Geoff Miller was 警報 enough to take the catch at 膝 高さ.

星／主役にする of David: England legend Gower played a smart innings to 保存する a draw

Adelaide 1990/91

Another unforgettable memory, but one that the English 関係者s would rather forget. Adelaide 1990-91 and by this time I was watching the Ashes late into the night on TV.

The narrative of that series was the 衝突／不一致 of philosophies between captain Graham Gooch and his 星／主役にする batsman David Gower - the roundhead and the cavalier - with Gower buzzing the ground in a Tiger Moth during a 小旅行する match in Queensland.

My memory （機の）カム later, during the fourth 実験（する） in Adelaide, when Gower threw his wicket away with an airily swatted waft 負かす／撃墜する the 脚 味方する off Craig McDermott from the last ball before lunch to find Merv Hughes in the 深い.

Gooch’s 直面する as he 軍隊／機動隊d off the field 井戸／弁護士席 after Gower betrayed his disgust and 失望.

Headingley 2001

Finally in t his 全く personal 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる） comes the best innings from another of my favourite players. 示す Butcher was going to be dropped for the fourth 実験（する） at Headingley in 2001 after one late night too many.

Nasser Hussain and Duncan Fletcher had decided to call up Kent’s David Fulton in his place but had a late change of mind to give Butcher one last chance. He 答える／応じるd by 得点する／非難する／２０ing an unbeaten 173 after a generous 宣言 from Australia's stand-in captain Adam Gilchrist had left England 315 to 勝利，勝つ.

Sportsmail photographer Graham Chadwick’s award-winning picture of Butcher leaving the field, bat aloft, with the scoreboard in the background, was the perfect image from yet another memorable game. Now I hope something that is about to happen in Australia will make its way on to my 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる）.
