In search of Shania continued

During my second trip to Canada in February I drove 支援する north from Sudbury to Chapleau, where Shania's natural father lives.

For more than a century, Chapleau has been the biggest 鉄道 終点 between Montreal and Winnipeg. There is logging in 豊富 but little else in a town slowly wasting away.

I stayed in the Sportsman's Hotel, whose 妨げる／法廷，弁護士業 hinted it might have had a life once. But not in February. There were only a couple of 正規の／正選手s and a pair of snowmobilers from 負かす／撃墜する south.

I ate breaded cutlets and spaghetti alone at Guy's restaurant where nobody smiled and watched as three hopelessly drunk 古代の natives tried to 交渉する a taxi home.

Six months after her parents died, Shania 設立する a 職業 singing in a Vegas-style revue at the Deerhurst 訴える手段／行楽地, just outside Huntsville, a charming 訴える手段／行楽地 town 125 miles north of Toronto and the centre of Muskoka or 'cottage country'.

Cottage is a misnomer as the 週末 退却／保養地s, mostly built in 支持を得ようと努めるd, come with all mod 反対／詐欺s and cost up to a million dollars. Shania is building her own place on a lakeside 陰謀（を企てる） outside Port Cunnington, where 隣人s 含む Goldie Hawn.

The 地元のs 誇る that Lake of Bays is God's country. Tourists have been coming here since the 1870s. In 1896 Charles Waterhouse, son of a Yorkshire lawyer, built a summer house with 18 bedrooms, a dining room, a smoking lounge and a veranda overlooking 半島 Lake.

The 宿泊する is still there, its ballroom still Deerhurst's musical 中心, and the revue continues. It's sti ll charming, intimate and fun to watch though the singers aren't half as pretty as Shania, who wore a dress much too tight and a Red Indian 衣装.

Lead ダンサー Lynn is an old friend of Shania while multi-instrumentalist Gilles Lanthier, who plays nightly in the Cypress Lounge, used to duet with her on the Motown classic It Takes Two.

Shania was married at Deerhurst and still visits. Now a year-一連の会議、交渉／完成する 会議／協議会 centre, it 保持するs much of its charm.

There are indoor and outdoor pools, tennis 法廷，裁判所s, a ゴルフ course which, under snow, （テニスなどの）ダブルス as a cross-country ski 跡をつける. Heavenly Valley, which will keep a competent スキーヤー amused for a day (but no more), is half a mile away.

In summer it makes a luxurious (and much more expensive) end point after a few days' canoeing and portaging (when you have to carry the damn boat) through Algonquin 地方の Park. It's also a perfect base to 調査する Muskoka or the 1,000 islands of Georgian Bay.

支援する in Toronto, my 生き残り in the frozen north was a source of amusement. They have so much space within a three-hour 運動 but all that wilderness is 半分-tamed.

The true Shania country is north of Muskoka above the 北極の watershed. A land where the rivers flow north into the 北極の Ocean.
