The 王室の Clipper: the world's largest square-rigger
On 12 December, 1854, the clipper ship 支持する/優勝者 of the Seas, sailing from Liverpool to Melbourne under Captain Alexander Newlands, 始める,決める a 記録,記録的な/記録する for a 24-hour run.
She covered 465 miles through the 嵐/襲撃するs and icebergs of the Southern Ocean, a 記録,記録的な/記録する which stood for 130 years and has never been beaten by another square-rigged clipper.
The 780 emigrants on board were so pleased with Captain Newlands that they '任意に 現在のd a complimentary testimonial to this gentleman, with sincere thanks to him for his 親切.'
And the Melbourne newspaper was 十分な of 賞賛する for the ship: 'Her model is faultless and the fittings for the accommodation of 乗客s more elegant, convenient, lofty and airy than those of any other...'
All of which explains my boyhood fascination with clippers. We might not 正確に/まさに 株 a 指名する - he was Alexander - but he was hero 構成要素 and I read everything I could find about him and his beautiful ship, which was later to 死なせる/死ぬ 劇的な in a 嵐/襲撃する off Cape Horn.
Almost 150 years later, 王室の Clipper, moving gently with the 微風s 負かす/撃墜する the Italian coast last summer, was also 'an exquisite 見本/標本 of floating architecture', like the 支持する/優勝者 of the Seas, but almost 正確に/まさに twice the size, and carryin g a third of the number of 乗客s.
Pacing the decks under the five masts and looking up the acres of canvas bulging in the 勝利,勝つd, the romance of sail is just as strong as in the 19th century.
王室の Clipper is the world's largest square-rigger. Up 最高の,を越す, she is all tradition: creaking ropes, blindingly white sails, winches and belaying pins, even a multilingual parrot. Below, she is mega-高級な ヨット, with marble bathrooms and five-星/主役にする dining.
She 巡航するs the 楽園 oceans of the world, from the Aegean to the Caribbean, 選ぶing the seasons when the 勝利,勝つd are balmiest and the sun 向こうずねs on her three swimming pools and 熱帯の 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業.
Owner Mikael Krafft was brought up 近づく a Swedish shipyard and spent his boyhood の中で the shipwrights. His hero was Donald McKay, a Scottish shipbuilder who owned the East Boston Shipyard in New England - the man who designed and built my hero's ship, the 支持する/優勝者 of the Seas.
Krafft's passion was to build a new clipper, and 結局 he built two - 星/主役にする Clipper and 星/主役にする Flyer. The tall ships were so successful that when he 追加するd a third ship to his (n)艦隊/(a)素早い he took over an abandoned ポーランドの(人) 事業/計画(する) which had left an enormous steel hulk rusting in the Gdansk shipyards.
The result is the sleek 王室の Clipper. With her painted gunports and 42 sails 非常に高い nearly 200ft, (人が)群がるs line the waterfront to see her sail wherever she goes.
During our trip 負かす/撃墜する the Italian coast, we made an inshore night visit to the 爆発するing 火山 of Stromboli, north of Sicily, where fireballs of 溶岩 宙返り/暴落する 負かす/撃墜する the 法外な 側面に位置するs of the island into the steaming sea.
わずかに closer to the 溶岩 flow was a 最高の-luxe French ヨット - ヘリコプター on the roof, elegantissimo dining under awnings on deck, candles and silverware 反映するing the red glow of the 火山. Suddenly the ヨット was popping with white flashes. They were photographing us - so much more photogenic than a few ヘクタールs of hot 激しく揺する.
