Singapore 航空機によるs flight horror: The science behind turbulence - as a 乗客 is killed and 多重の others 負傷させるd on a UK flight to Singapore

Turbulence is the 禁止(する) of any long-運ぶ/漁獲高 flight, but this natural 現象 can be far more than 簡単に annoying.

In the worst-事例/患者 シナリオ, turbulence can 動揺させる 計画(する)s so violently that they rise and 落ちる by as much as 100ft (30m) metres at a time.

Today, one 乗客 was killed and 多重の others were 負傷させるd when a Singapore 航空路s flight 遭遇(する)d 特に extreme turbulence.

In the wake of the 出来事/事件, 専門家s have 明らかにする/漏らすd just how this terrifying and 予測できない 天候 現象 comes about.?

Worryingly, as 気候 change continues to alter 天候 patterns, 研究員s 警告する that 厳しい turbulence may become much more ありふれた.?

What is turbulence??

If you've ever been on a 計画(する), it's likely you have already first-手渡す experience of turbulence.

The 計画(する) 揺さぶるs and lurches up and 負かす/撃墜する, drinks are spilt, and walking in the aisle becomes nearly impossible.?

Dr David Birch, 長,率いる of the 長,率いる of the Centre for Aerodynamics & 環境の Flow at the University of Surrey, told MailOnline that this is all 予定 to the flow of 空気/公表する.

'When you experience "turbulence" on an 航空機, this is because the 航空機 has flown into a 地域 of 乱すd 空気/公表する, filled with 渦巻くs and eddies,' he said.

'Like a boat on a choppy sea, the 航空機 is 押し進めるd around by the moving 空気/公表する.'

In the wake of the incident, experts have reve

What 原因(となる)s turbulence?

Mountains

  • As 勝利,勝つd 現在のs 攻撃する,衝突する mountains they can produce 'mountain waves'.
  • These are 地域s of 騒然とした 空気/公表する which can shake nearby 計画(する)s.

嵐/襲撃するs

  • Large 嵐/襲撃するs create 抱擁する vertical 空気/公表する 現在のs which 原因(となる) 計画(する)s to rise or 落ちる.?
  • Passing 航空機 can rise or 落ちる between 600 and 1830 metres (2,000-6,000ft) at a time.

Jet streams

  • In (疑いを)晴らす 空気/公表する turbulence passing 計画(する)s can be caught by high 速度(を上げる) 勝利,勝つd.
  • These may become worse as 気候 change 影響する/感情s 天候 patterns.??

That 騒動 is 階級d on a 規模 from 'light', which 原因(となる)s slight erratic changes in 高度, to '厳しい', in which the 航空機 is violently 投げ上げる/ボディチェックするd about and becomes 事実上 impossible to 支配(する)/統制する.?

In the most extreme 事例/患者s, this not only makes 飛行機で行くing uncomfortable, but can lead to 構造上の 損失 to the 計画(する) itself and even 害(を与える) to 乗客s.?

The choppy 空気/公表する we feel as turbulence doesn't have a 選び出す/独身 原因(となる) and comes from a number of different sources.??

Dr Birch explains: 'Turbulence can be 原因(となる)d by natural phenomena like normal atmospheric 勝利,勝つd patterns, or by wakes of other nearby 航空機.'

One of the most ありふれた 原因(となる)s of 厳しい turbulence is 'mechanical turbulence', which is very ありふれた around mountains and other physical obstructions.

If you imagine waves hitting a 激しく揺する in the ocean, the 以前 uniform water is now broken up and choppy.

When 勝利,勝つd 攻撃する,衝突する mountains, the same thing happens, forming what are known as 'mountain waves'.

These broken-up 空気/公表する 現在のs create packets of rolling, 騒然とした 空気/公表する that shake 計画(する)s that try to pass through.

However, some of the most violent turbulence is 原因(となる)d by 雷雨s which create 抱擁する vertical 現在のs of violent 空気/公表する.?

によれば the 国家の 天候 Service, these 現在のs can 原因(となる) 計画(する)s to rise or 落ちる between 600 and 1830 metres (2,000-6,000ft) at a time.?

Nor is this disruption 限られた/立憲的な to the centre of the 嵐/襲撃する, as 嵐/襲撃するs can 誘発する/引き起こす 厳しい turbulence up to 20 miles (32km) downwind.?

Some of the most violent turbulence is 原因(となる)d by 雷雨s which create 抱擁する vertical 現在のs of violent 空気/公表する

But even without 嵐/襲撃するs or mountains, 商業の 航空機 can still 遭遇(する) strong 現在のs called jet streams.

These 狭くする 禁止(する)d of 空気/公表する 循環させる around the 惑星 around the same 高さ as 計画(する)s at 速度(を上げる)s of more than 275 mph (442 km/h).

The difference between the 急速な/放蕩な moving jet stream and the surrounding 空気/公表する creates pockets of 極端に volatile 空気/公表する which can have a big 衝撃 on passing 計画(する)s.??

Pau l Williams, professor of atmospheric science at the University of Reading, told MailOnline that this is called '(疑いを)晴らす 空気/公表する turbulence'.?

Professor Williams says: 'It can be difficult to 避ける because it doesn't show up on the 天候 レーダ in the flight deck.'

Storms produce some of the most disruptive turbulence due to the vast columns of rising air which can push planes?between 600 and 1830 metres (2,000-6,000ft) up or down

嵐/襲撃するs produce some of the most 破壊的な turbulence 予定 to the 広大な columns of rising 空気/公表する which can 押し進める 計画(する)s?between 600 and 1830 metres (2,000-6,000ft) up or 負かす/撃墜する?

What happened on the Singapore 航空路s flight??

A 乗客 has been killed and several 乗客s 負傷させるd 船内に a flight from London to Singapore, which was 軍隊d to make an 緊急 上陸 in Thailand.

The Boeing 777 計画(する)?operated by Singapore 航空機によるs left the UK's Heathrow Airport on Monday evening at 22.17pm 地元の time with 211 乗客s and 18 乗組員 on board.

However, the flight 攻撃する,衝突する extreme turbulence while 近づく Myanmar's 航空宇宙学, a 地域 現在/一般に 存在 乱打するd by extreme 熱帯の 雷雨s.?

航空 天候 報告(する)/憶測s show that 雷雨s reaching 51,000ft are 現在/一般に spread over western Thailand.?

によれば 報告(する)/憶測s, the 計画(する) is believed to have 急落するd for a number of minutes in extreme turbulence at?31,000 feet before descending 速く.

It is possible that the rising 空気/公表する 現在のs from the 熱帯の 嵐/襲撃する may have 原因(となる)d the violent turbulence that 軍隊d the 航空機 負かす/撃墜する.?

However, 十分な 分析 of the type of turbulence that led to the fatality is likely to take some time.?

This flight tracker showed the 計画(する)'s 大勝する from London before コースを変えるing to?Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok. The 計画(する) コースを変更するd すぐに after passing by Myanmar 航空宇宙学 which is 現在/一般に experiencing 厳しい 熱帯の 嵐/襲撃するs?

In a 声明 地位,任命するd to Facebook, Singapore 航空機によるs wrote: 'Singapore 航空機によるs flight #SQ321, operating from London (Heathrow) to Singapore on 20 May 2024, 遭遇(する)d 厳しい turbulence en-大勝する.

'We can 確認する that there are 傷害s and one fatality on board the Boeing 777-300ER. There were a total of 211 乗客s and 18 乗組員 on board'.

It is not すぐに (疑いを)晴らす what 原因(となる)d the 乗客's death but it could be 予定 to 落ちるing 反対するs.

Dr Birch says: 'This is one of the 推論する/理由s we're told to 安全な・保証する all 捕らえる、獲得するs in 総計費 lockers or under seats: these 反対するs can become 潜在的に dangerous in the ありそうもない event that the cabin is 原因(となる)d to shake around.?

'Likewise, if you aren't wearing your seatbelt, you could be 負傷させるd in much the same way as you would in a car even in a minor 衝突/不一致.'?

Are deaths 予定 to turbulence ありふれた??

Turbulence is 極端に ありふれた and the 広大な 大多数 of 出来事/事件s do not lead to 傷害 or death.

As Dr Birch explains, turbulence at 高度 is a 全く natural and normal 現象 that we 簡単に don't notice much of the time.

He says: 'The only time you can experience it is on an 航空機 - and even then, 操縦するs will have 前進する 警告 of pockets of high turbulence and will 避ける them.'?

However, turbulence is also the most ありふれた source of serious 傷害 while in the 空気/公表する.?

によれば the? 連邦の 航空 当局 (FAA), there were 163 serious 傷害s 予定 to turbulence between 2009 and 2022.

Of those, 163 影響する/感情d cabin 乗組員 who are more likely to be stood in when turbulence 攻撃する,衝突するs.

A person is seen being carried away from the aircraft on a stretcher today in Bangkok

A person is seen 存在 carried away from the 航空機 on a 担架 today in Bangkok

However, it is 価値(がある) 公式文書,認めるing that the FAA only considers 傷害s serious when they 要求する 'the individual to be 入院させるd for more than 48 hours' or result in bone fractures, 組織/臓器 損失, haemorrhage, or 厳しい 燃やすs.

Other 傷害s are not 報告(する)/憶測d and so the true levels of 傷害 予定 to turbulence are likely to be higher.?

によれば data published by the?国家の Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), there have been 22 致命的な 傷害s 予定 to a 'turbulence 遭遇(する)' on US 航空機.

However, in almost half of those 事例/患者s the whole 航空機 was destroyed rather than a 選び出す/独身 乗客 存在 負傷させるd.?

Professor Williams told MailOnline: 'Turbulence fatalities on 商業の flights are fortunately very rare, but have sadly 増加するd by one today.

'The last fatality 原因(となる)d by (疑いを)晴らす-空気/公表する turbulence on a 商業の flight occurred on 28 December 1997, on a 部隊d 航空機によるs flight from Tokyo to Honolulu.'

However, Professor Williams also 公式文書,認めるs that other forms of turbulence have resulted in deaths more recently.??

Last year, turbulence 原因(となる)d '致命的な 傷害s to a 乗客' 船内に a jet 飛行機で行くing from New Hampshire to Virginia.

Dana Hyde, 55, was killed after 操縦するs switched off a system that helps keep 航空機 stable, an 調査 設立する.

Worryingly, Professor Williams also 公式文書,認めるs that turbulence is likely to become worse as time goes by.?

As 気候 change changes 全世界の 気温s, the jet streams have become 意味ありげに more 騒然とした.

Professor Williams own 研究 設立する that 厳しい (疑いを)晴らす 空気/公表する turbulence has 増加するd by 55 per cent over the North 大西洋 since 1979.?

He says: 'We now have strong 証拠 that turbulence is 増加するing because of 気候 change.?

'Our 最新の 未来 発射/推定s 示す a 二塁打ing or trebling of 厳しい turbulence in the jet streams in the coming 10年間s, if the 気候 continues to change as we 推定する/予想する.
